This is a flashback to 2023 when I performed with a Bossa Nova group known as Bossa Linda.
Bass
I only owned one bass at the time, “Bread and Butter.” This is the Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe I’ve has for a while.
My approach for most of these songs is to stay on track and emulate a Brazilian drum pattern. The Surdo is the large drum seem in samba ensembles. It almost looks like the kick drum on a trap drum set. It’s usually strapped to the player’s neck and they use a large mallet and their hand to make lots of different sounds.
Congas are not Brazilian.
However, people like it anyway. It’s common. I’m not one to judge much because I’ve made a pretty penny playing Brazilian music with a Djembe. Anyway, I would guess latin jazz, big band, and practical fun made this acceptable. Also, I am here in SoCal where other musical demands make congas prevalent.
