Parental Guidance -Navigating AI usage for Kids.

A lot of development is happening around in the field of AI based ChatGPT. It is not concerned with the development happening at the backend (the owner firing and replacement) which was a lot in news recently but overall too. We have seen its vast scope and rapid expansion in every other sphere. In a year time since ChatGPT burst onto the scene, it added a different level of excitement. But at the same time, it is also a topic of concern about what it might mean for education. May be too much dependency on AI chatbot does not result in spoiling the education system. Nowadays every answer to all question were available over the internet and ChatGPT is fuelling the fire.

We have seen a lot of chatGPT expansion and its usage, like, MyAI (chatGPT chatbot) was embedded into social media platform #Snapchat. It encourages teens to ask anything. Similarly, in recent times, #Copilot introduced by #Microsoft, and known as an 'everyday AI companion'. Further, the introduction of 'Bing Chat', an AI-enhanced assistant to accompany the #Bing search tool.. A lot of changes is happening in everywhere, from software of apps, to search engine ChatGPT has made name for itself.

All of a sudden, generative artificial intelligence has become accessible to everyone, including young people. There are risks as well as benefits. Especially to the kids who consider it as their angel for resolving their queries. Being a parent it is importsnt that the usage should not be in negative way. Many schools have considered banning some AI uses, amid claims it would lead to cheating and undermine academic integrity. Parents may be naturally hesitant about AI. It is important for parents to learn about these new technology and try these technologies for themselves, so they can help their child navigate a new world with AI.

Here are few of the ways through which the parents can put a check on the Generative AI usage.

Be Selective.

It is wise to understand that, there are certain limitation of ChatGPT. The software is trained on data from a specific time so there are many recent or older events which may not be included. The AI cannot evaluate the credibility of sources of a content too. Although the output looks similar to other writing like, in books or article, the parents needs to makes sure that every word, sentence and claim should be treated with skepticism.

Be Informative

We need to understand that chatGPT or artificial intelligence are machines. These machines run on predefined codes, models or algorithims. In no way the output shared are based on beliefs, culture or religion. The code or algorithms may be manually edited to inhibit certain viewpoints or stances on topics. Rather than sharing the actual realistic figure or details. It is important for the parents to do their own experiment together by asking the bot some questions and reflecting on the output generated by the chatGPT bot.

Be Protective

The possibilities of children greatly benefiting from this technology are endless. However being a responsible parent we need to put a check on its usage. There are no human checks on inappropriate content. The applications could feed into a child curiosity and potentially manipulate them into unethical and harmful situations. Make sure they do not spend long hours on these tools.
Also to make sure to teach their kids to keep their personal data and other sensitive information protected.

Generative AI can do amazing things, like generate images or write content etc. AI can be a powerful learning and engagement tool, and the developments in this field are highly exciting. #AI is not going to go away, and will only become more widely used in our lives. The sooner young people learn to use this technology, the more informed they can be about how to use it wisely and productively.

Being a parent, we can use this as an opportunity to help our children develop critical thinking skills through proper usage of this technology.
