Gaeltland
"All of us, as one."
Overview
Gaeltland is located in the highlands near Mount Vinterdun in Praetoria’s Pristine Northwest. It is a representative democracy composed of seven clans. Originating from the highlands of Korsigon on the continent of Khymeria, the clans began their colonization of Praetoria shortly after the fall of the Wizards’ Veil. They have established multiple settlements in the area; the largest, Firth, serves as the headquarters of the Highland Council. Each clan holds autonomy over its affairs, with the Highland Council settling disputes and making executive, judicial, and legislative decisions concerning multiple clans.
Governance
Each clan elects two to three councilors to the Highland Council based on a proportional representation, for a total of seventeen councilors. The council's role is to resolve any inter-clan disputes and handle matters affecting the collective welfare of Gaeltland.
Clans
Each clan has its unique attributes and contributions to Gaeltland's identity.
- The Bruce Clan considers themselves the most noble lot and are often at odds with the other clans.
- The MacAllen Clan is the most patriotic of the clans and often sacrifice their own interests for the greater good of Gaeltland. They oftentimes serve as peacekeepers, mediating disputes before they rise to the level of the Highland Council.
- The MacCallum Clan is Gaeltland’s largest and most influential clan.
- The MacCleod Clan is renowned for their pride and martial prowress.
- The MacGregor Clan is primarily farmers and seafarers, crewing Gaeltland’s naval and fishing vessels.
- Those of the Gunn Clan are typically taller than the average Khymerian human and are known for their short tempers and ferocity in combat.
- The Wallace Clan is Gaeltland’s most peaceful clan, although they are quick to defend their homeland if threatened.
Economy
Gaetland’s economy relies on its verdant highlands, boundless oceans, and an industrious populace. The rolling landscapes of Gaeltland bear a myriad of crops but are renowned for their golden barley, a grain that is both hardy and versatile. When brewed, it produces fine ales and whiskies sought after even in distant lands. Highland whiskies, with their enchanting blend of flavors, are said to have minor restorative properties, making them a staple in many a healer's kit.
Crafted from the resilient oaks of Mount Vinterdun, Gaetland’s ships sail to distant shores and bring back exotic goods and tales. Meanwhile, the waters off the Frigid Coasts teem with fish and other marine life; particularly, the colossus salmon is a delicacy that fetches high prices in markets throughout Praetoria.
Gaeltland’s citizenry, known as highlanders, are known to offer their services as mercenaries to neighboring lands (particularly those of the MacCleod Clan), earning both coin and respect. Their weapons are sought for their balance, sharpness, and the intricate clan emblems etched onto the blades.
Meanwhile, jewelry made of sea gems, armor embroidered with highland motifs, and tapestries narrating grand clan tales have all find their way into markets across Praetoria.
Demographics
Races
Almost all highlanders are Khymerian humans.
Religions
Highlanders primarily pay tribute to the following deities:
- Thedan, God of Mountains and Crafting
- Khymia, Goddess of Life and the Upper Planes
- Serathara, Goddess of Nature and the Fey
- Votix, Goddess of War, Strength, and Deserts
- The Brotherhood, Gods of Wood, Earth, and Stone
- Solaki, Brother Sun God of the Sky and Illumination
- Albiana, Goddess of Music, Knowledge, and Wisdom
- Ulum, God of Cold, Winter, and Blizzards
Culture
From its towering keeps to its most humble dwellings, Gaetland’s architecture is primarily constructed of locally quarried gray stone and adorned with distinctive patterns, knots, and artwork, as well as emblems of the clans. Hence, each building tells a story. Sculptures of ancient clan heroes, carved from wood and stone, are commonplace, guarding entrances and standing proudly in town squares.
Highlanders cherish their oral traditions, passing down tales of valor, love, and magic from generation to generation. Skalds and bards are revered figures, traveling from one clan’s territory to another’s, sharing stories and bringing news. Philosophically, highlanders often debate the balance of clan autonomy with the collective good, leading to spirited debates in mead halls.
Music is the lifeblood of Gaeltland’s culture. From the lilting tunes of the lute to the haunting melodies of bagpipes, highlanders express joy, sorrow, love, and war through their songs. Dancing, which might mimick ancient battles or celebrate the seasons, often accompany these tunes, with each clan boasting a unique style.
Gaeltland’s cuisine is hearty and varied. Thick highland stews are typically made with tender meats, grains, and vegetables. Golden barley finds its way into bread, ales, and the famed highland whiskies, while mead—flavored with wild berries—is a favored drink at feasts. Seafood, especially the colossus salmon, is grilled, smoked, or baked into pies.
The clans of Gaetland are known to boast of their prowess in battle, each claiming they are more skilled and powerful than the others. Their champions face off in contests such as magic and martial duels, archery competitions, and the thrilling Highland Gauntlet: a grueling obstacle course that combines physical strength and endurance with magical acumen. But the most popular event is Gaelt Royale: a mock battle during which clans employ strategy and strength to claim supremacy. These games, while competitive, also serve to foster camaraderie and unity amongst the clans of Gaeltland.
