JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS

Theme:I LOVE ROCK N’ ROLL.
Disc:Blackhearts.
Year:1982.

A declaration of principles. Joan Jett loved rock n' roll, and although she didn't need to prove it to anyone, this was a good way to say it in the face of all the companies that didn't put the slightest interest in supporting her when she decided to go solo, to all those who believed that she wouldn't be able to form her own band and start a record label to release her records.

Joan did, and after leaving the Runaways, a pioneer female rock group, she formed the Blackhearts and founded the label of the same name, tired of hearing the typical “we'll call you” or “come tomorrow” in different record stores. One day, while she and the “Blackhearts” were touring England after the release of their first album, “Bad Reputation” (another identifying title for her), she saw on TV an unknown band called The Arrows playing this song they had recorded in 1975.

THE BLACKHEARTS

Joan was immediately smitten by the song's charm, and the Arrows, who had simply intended it for the b-side of one of their singles, didn't mind her covering it. Said and done, Joan reworked the song and turned it into an absolute hit that topped the American charts for seven weeks in 1982.

It was the triumph of the determination, confidence, attitude and charisma of this warrior woman. The Blackhearts' version took the baton left by punk, making the simplicity of the song not to be at odds with its undoubted power and innate strength. A riff accompanied by clapping, made noisy and rocking by Ricky Byrd's guitar, a repetitive and constant rhythm, and a monumental and catchy chorus.

Joan also transformed the background of the song by adapting it to her feminine personality; she talked about her attraction to a guy in a bar who played her favorite song on a jukebox and how she asked him to put another quarter in the jukebox and dance with her while shouting from the rooftops how much she loved rock n' roll.

An act of seduction that ended in a way with the predominance of male conquests in rock, and that turned Joan into a role model for many women who have wanted to dedicate themselves to this after her. Even teen pop star Britney Spears recently recorded a version of the song, dressing up as a “rocker” and making a sexually provocative exercise in the song's video clip.

But no matter how morbid and sexy the girl gets, she will never match the powerful intensity with which Joan Jett sang the song in an unparalleled display of personality and character. Sorry Britney...
