David Geffen's record label was one of the labels that bet the most (and obtained the best results) for rock in the 80s. One of his first decisions in that magical decade was to acquire the services of Asia, a newly formed super band.
In their ranks no less than vocalist and bassist John Wetton, from King Crimson, Yes guitarist Steve Howe, Emerson, Lake & Palmer drummer Carl Palmer, and Buggles keyboardist Geoff Downes. Their bands of origin were in all the cases of symphonic and progressive tendency, that megalomaniac rock that for a time had monopolized the protagonism in the 70's until punk threw their grandiloquent conceptions to the ground.
However, perhaps jaded by their past, Asia decided to leave the instrumental and compositional pomposity mostly aside and focused on making songs like the hit “Heat Of The Moment”, a chart success, where it reached the fourth position propelling the group's debut album, the eponymous “Asia” to the top of the American charts, where it remained unbeatable for two long months. A radio-friendly song, with a lot of melody and a great pop hook.
Steve Howe signed a captivating riff that marked the vocal lines of a brilliant and melodious John Wetton, while the song was raising its intensity until it reached a chorus full of strength that Geoff Downes backed up with his keys and synthesizers.
And although in certain details you could still guess the progressive style of the band members, “Heat Of The Moment” was still a full-fledged pop-rock-heavy exercise that for a while (the song was in the charts for 12 weeks) turned Asia into the stadium-busters of the moment in the world tour they carried out after this resounding success.
