Legendary Rock Songs: I WANNA BE SOMEBODY: W.A.S.P.
Theme:I WANNA BE SOMEBODY.
Disc:Wasp.
Disc:1984
The scene was already hot when W.A.S.P. sang “I wanna be somebody son...” roaring like beasts. Blackie Lawless said he wanted to be somebody... well, he got it! For a while the W.A.S.P. frotman was considered one of the most dangerous guys and one of the greatest enemies of America's youth.
The reason had been their 1983 debut, spectacular in every way, with the song “Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)”, a song of explicit sexual and sonorous violence. A real “animal”. Tipper Gore, the president of the PRMC, the biggest American music censor, was scandalized with that wild band, with its aggressive song and the bloody cover of the Ep that contained it, where a rotating saw was doing its thing in a hot crotch.
An “artifact” that Blackie did not hesitate to wear live, because in their concerts, W.A.S.P. did not cut a hair, that was a show of explicit perversion and maximum provocation, with “penis knives” extirpating fetuses of tortured nuns, diabolical motorcycles and burning metal. Songs like this lit the flame that had as a reaction an unstoppable wave of censorship and that would lead to the famous label of prevention of the “harmful” content of the records, the famous “Parental Advisory”.
As if that wasn't enough, Blackie didn't surround himself with “little angels”, Tony Richards opened the band's debut full-length with this infernal drumming until one of the most over-the-top guys of the hard 80's, guitarist Chris Holmes, a real freak, strafed with the riff until the hecatomb. W.A.S.P. have kept on warring and splattering the public with blood, guts and heavy metal until today.
After them came other gangs of born provocateurs and their impact, although equally incisive, was somewhat muted, but they already had what they wanted....
