"Are you the guys on the beach who hated everything? With this phrase pronounced in a repetitive tone by a woman's voice that ended its intervention with a noticeable noise of displeasure began the amusing song that would give Ugly Kid Joe its fifteen seconds of Glory. Formed in Isla Vista, California, the quintet had been baptized in such a way as a mockery of one of the most overloaded and delirious groups of the glam-hair-metal of the end of the 80s.
Pretty Boy Floyd. Paradoxes of destiny, they themselves were considered with the time a joke and today they are remembered as a funny group more than anything else. Because the truth is that they were funny, what happened is that their style was quickly exhausted at a time of change, they kept reminiscences of the hard rock they criticized and although they brought many influences of funk and rap, the absorption of these trends by the rock was so fast that they were soon outdated.
But before that they had time to have a good time and give us, five crazy American beach boys who one day decided to record their songs on an Ep called “As Ugly As They Wanna Be” (1991). “Everything About You” soon became the star track of that mini-Lp, a rock song that also came out as a single with funk deviations and a small rapped fragment that had a huge pull for its addictive melody and funny lyrics. Whitfield Crane and his modulating raspy timbre claimed to absolutely hate everything known and yet to be known with a lot of passive macarreria.
The song caught the attention of filmmaker Penelope Spheeris, who decided to include it in the soundtrack of her famous comedy “Wayne's World”, starring Mike Myers (“Austin Powers”) and Dana Carvey. Its repercussion was such that soon “As Ugly As They Wanna Be” was certified multi-platinum, being the first Ep to achieve such a feat. Being a small release and difficult to distribute, once they had a bigger record deal they decided to include the hit song again in their first full-length. “America's Least Wanted”, along with other great songs like “Neighbour” or their version of Harry Chapin's “Cats In The Cradle”.
The bad thing is that after that, nobody remembered them or paid enough attention to them, and although they continued in activity for a few more years and albums, it was never the same again. However, when “Everything About You” is played, it is still received with a smile by those who enjoyed it back then.
