Legendary Rock Songs: DON’T FEAR THE REAPER: BLUE OYSTER CULT.
Disc:Agents Of Fortune.
Year:1976.
Another of those bands whose contribution was capital in the construction of what we know today as heavy metal, however, this their most famous hit plays other cards than those of the monstrous riff and the heavy sound that for example had another of their greatest songs, “Godzilla”, “Don't Fear The Reaper (first single of the album to which it belongs) has other trump cards; a softer but constantly rhythmic arpeggiated riff and a pop cadence that gives it the tremendous melodic power in the line of great groups of the 60's like the Byrds or the Beach Boys more vocally restrained.
A beautiful and emotive structure of melodies and choruses that gallops with a firm and delicate step, producing an insinuating and deep effect, almost ghostly, that reaches an especially emotional tension in the intermediate pause, that clean and stealthy plucking and the guitar sounding like a distant and high-pitched whine.
If John Carpenter chose it as the soundtrack for his terrifying movie “Halloween”, it was for a reason. Of course, Blue Oyster Cult could rock a lot harder, but that didn't mean that their more elegant side had to be any less effective, with a neat lyric composition that evidenced the band members' bunk passion.
“Don't Fear The Reaper” was a notorious chart hit, and made ‘Agents Of Fortune’ the band's first album to be certified platinum.
