#52 History Of Rock Music: MEDINA AZAHARA: TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE.
One of the Spanish rock bands with the most loyal audience and that many people have not yet stopped to listen carefully to the richness of their music. Their originality, good work and popularity are undisputed. To understand their weight in the state scene we must go back and analyze the moment in which the band was formed. In 1979 Andalusian rock was in luck with the success of Triana and a scene in full swing. There was born the germ of Medina Azahara, a Cordovan group that followed the coordinates marked by their closest references, rock with Andalusian airs, flamboyant if you will, but pure rock, hard and good.

Su originalidad, buen hacer y popularidad no tienen discusión. Para comprender su peso en la escena estatal hay que volver atrás y analizar el momento en que se formo la banda. En 1979 el rock andaluz estaba de enhorabuena con el éxito de Triana y una escena en plena ebullición. Ahí nacio el germen de Medina Azahara, grupo cordobes que seguía las coordenadas marcadas por sus referentes mas próximos, rock de aires andaluces, aflamencado si se quiere, pero puro rock, duro y del bueno.
Their eponymous debut would come a year later, in 1980, with an album containing “Paseando Por La Mezquita”, an unexpected success for the group. “La Esquina Del Viento” and the homage to their homeland with ‘Andalucia’ were their next releases. But Andalusian rock was already in the doldrums, its boom had been mitigated in the face of other movements in vogue such as the Movida Madrileña, which was to dominate the Spanish music scene. Medina decided to take a break and wait for better times to come. With their ranks renewed but keeping the imprint of their style, they returned four years later with “Caravana Española”, but it was not until 89, with the entry of guitarist Paco Ventura, when they took off again.
Su debut homónimo se produciría un año mas tarde, en 1980, con un álbum que contenia “Paseando Por La Mezquita”, un inesperado éxito para el grupo. “La Esquina Del Viento” y el homenaje a su tierra con “Andalucia” fueron sus siguientes lanzamientos. Pero el rock andaluz ya estaba de capa caída, su auge se había mitigado frente a otros movimientos en boga como la movida madrileña que iba a copar la actualidad musical española. Medina optan por tomarse un descanso y esperar la llegada de tiempos mejores. Con sus filas renovadas pero manteniendo la impronta de su estilo, regresan cuatro años mas tarde con “Caravana Española”, pero no será hasta el 89, con la entrada del guitarra Paco Ventura, cuando remonten vuelo.
Paco's technique and youth revive the band's spirits, which that same year signs with the Avispa label, faithful support throughout the years, to release “... En Al-Hakim”. “Live” would be however the real turning point of the new stage. A live review of their career gives them energy and drive to continue with recharged batteries. “Sin Tiempo”, their next album, was a commercial success, and to this day is still remembered as their definitive album. In three months the album went platinum, and that sales splendor was also reflected in the number of people attending their concerts, which grew spectacularly. Medina Azahara had just become a legend. Later would come “Donde Esta la Luz” and “Arabe”, equally acclaimed works that opened the way to success in Latin America and Japan.
La técnica y la juventud de Paco reavivan los animos de la banda, que ese mismo año firma con el sello Avispa, apoyo fiel a lo largo de los años, para aditar “… En Al-Hakim”. “En directo” seria sin embargo el verdadero punto de inflexión de la nueva etapa. Un repaso en vivo a su trayectoria les da energía y empuje para seguir con las pilas recargadas. “Sin Tiempo”, su siguiente trabajo, fue todo un suceso comercial, y hasta el dia de hoy se ha seguido recordando como su álbum definitivo. En tres meses el disco era platino, y ese esplendor de ventas se reflejo también en el numero de asistentes a sus conciertos, que crecio espectacularmente. Medina Azahara acababan de convertirse en leyenda. Después vendrían “Donde Esta la Luz” y “Arabe”, trabajos igualmenteaclamados que les abre además el camino del éxito en Latinoamerica y Japon.
The gratitude for the support was not to be long in coming, it would be with “A Toda Esa Gente”, a tribute to their people in which they reviewed their career live. “Tanger” was an intimate and risky step in search of their musical roots, the Arabian airs starred in a CD again excellently received by the public and critics, since ‘Sin Tiempo’ all their albums had reached gold and even platinum. In 1999 they touch our heartstrings with their most emotional songs in “Baladas”, and a year later they celebrate their birthday - no less than 20 years of musical career - with “XX”, another studio album, undoubtedly a very special present instead of the cold compilation of the day. Last year, more Medina. “Tierra de Libertad” is their latest release to date, an album that keeps them in enviable shape and with which the overall sales of their work have exceeded one million copies.
El agradecimiento al apoyo brindado no iba a tardar en llegar, seria con “A Toda Esa Gente”, un homenaje a su gente en el que repasaban su carrera en vivo. “Tanger” fue un paso intimista y arriesgado en busca de sus raíces musicales, los aires árabes protagonizaron un cd de nuevo excelentemente acogido por publico y critica, desde “Sin Tiempo” todos sus álbumes habían llegadoa disco de oro e incluso platino. En el 99 nos tocan la fibra sensible con sus temas mas emotivos en “Baladas”, y un año mas tarde celebran su cumpleaños – nada menos que 20 años de andadura musical – con “XX”, otro álbum de estudio, sin duda un presente muy especial en lugar del frio recopilatorio de turno. El pasado año, mas Medina. “Tierra de Libertad” es hasta la fecha su ultimo lanzamiento, disco que les mantiene con una forma envidiable y con el que las ventas generales de sus trabajos han superado el millón de ejemplares.
