#51 History Of Rock Music: LOS SUEVES: A STEP FORWARD IN TIME.
They are more topical than ever. They have just copied the cover of our last issue, and not for free. The band from Orense has been on the crest of the wave for many years now, as one of the great combos of Spanish rock, and they are still in very good shape. Of course, they are no rookies in this, although success was slow in coming. Unconditional lovers of Thin Lizzy, their great opportunity came in 81, when after opening for the Ramones, the Galician independent company Edigal took notice of them, and recorded their first album, “Esta Vida Me Va A Matar”. The inimitable texts of Yosi, about rock n' roll, partying, alcohol and women, those personal verses sung with a hunting voice about the hard rock of the band, were already there.
Estan mas de actualidad que nunca. Acaban de copar la portada de nuestro ultimo numero, y no de forma gratuita. La banda de Orense, lleva ya muchos años en la cresta de la ola, como uno de los grandes combos del rock español, y siguen en muy buena forma. Por supuesto, no son unos novatos en esto, aunque el éxito les tardo en llegar. Amantes incondicionales de Thin Lizzy, su gran oportunidad les llego en el 81, cuando tras telonear a los Ramones, la compañía independiente gallega Edigal se fijo en ellos, y les grabo su primera obra, “Esta Vida Me Va A Matar”. Ya aparecían por allí los textos inimitables de Yosi, de rock n’ roll, juergas, alcohol y mujeres, esos personales versos cantados con voz cazallosa sobre el rock duro de la banda.
The recognition throughout the state would come two albums later, in 88, with “Ese Dia Piensa En Mi” and the live “Suave Es La Noche” a year later. They began to play gigs all over the national territory, and their popularity was rising like crazy. But the definitive revulsive would come from the hand of a young guitarist, called Alberto Cereijo, who would join their ranks to replace Hermes, a charismatic dark-haired man with a spectacular guitar playing. Their sound would become harder, more aggressive, heavier, and that would increase their legion of fans, since Spanish rock was becoming more and more popular among young people who were moving away from the formula radio.
El reconocimiento en todo el estado les llegaría dos discos mas tarde, en el 88, con “Ese Dia Piensa En Mi” y el directo “Suave Es La Noche” de un año mas tarde. Comenzaban a realizar bolos por todo el territorio nacional, y su tirada popular subia como la espuma.pero el revulsivo definitivo llegaría de mano de un joven guitarrista, llamado Alberto Cereijo, que se uniria a sus filas para sustituir a Hermes, carismático moreno de espectacular factura guitarrera. Su sonido se endurecería, se haría mas agresivo, mas heavy, y eso aumentaría su legion de fans, ya que el rock español cada vez tenia mayor presencia entre los gustos juveniles que se apartaban de la radio formula.
“Maldita Sea Mi Suerte” had an extraordinary reception, pure Suaves sound, songs with hook, weekend bar anthems... Their importance was such in the national scene, that a multinational was going to notice them. Polygram added them to their ranks, and with them they were going to live their most successful years at all levels, with all their works reaching the gold record. Their debut under the new label was “2Malas Noticias”, which contrary to its title brought good news to the followers of Hispanic rock. It was 1993 and Los Suaves were already among the great living legends of rock in our land, in fact the following year they would literally sweep the Rockferendum of this magazine, winning five of the awards. Their next work would definitely raise their name to the altars of the Spanish rock scene.
“Maldita Sea Mi Suerte” tuvo una acogida extraordinaria, puro sonido Suaves, canciones con gancho, himnos de bares de fin de semana… Su importancia era tal en el panorama estatal, que una multinacional se iba a fijar en ellos. Polygram los añadia a sus filas, y con ella iban a vivir sus años mas exitosos a todos los niveles, con todos sus trabajos alcanzando el disco de oro. Su debut bajo el nuevo sello fue “2Malas Noticias”, que contrariando a su titulo trajo buenas nuevas a los seguidores del rock hispano. Era 1993 y Los Suaves ya estaban entre las grandes leyendas vivas del rollo en nuestra tierra, de hecho al año siguiente arrasarían literalmente el Rockferendum de esta revista, ganando cinco de los premios. Su siguiente obra iba a elevar definitivamente su nombre a los altares del mundillo rockero español.
“Santa Compaña” produces the fans' hullabaloo, and the band's T-shirts, with the famous cat printed on them, can be seen by the hundreds at rock concerts all over the country. Concerts that the band itself stars in many occasions, filling bigger and bigger venues, as absolute stars, with pavilions full to overflowing chanting each one of their songs. The most vivid reflection of that spectacular tide of people who come to their shows was “¿Hay Alguien Ahí?”, a live double that also makes them win a good handful of fans dazzled with “Dolores Se Llamaba Lola”, unloaded in that atmosphere of pure delirium, new generations discover these old rockers. Like a locomotive with no intention of stopping at any station was a group that despite receiving with each work the gold certification had no intention of slowing down in its ascent. And as such a mighty smoking train they arrived to “San Francisco Express”, another new best seller in 1997.
“Santa Compaña” produce la algarabía de los fans, y las camisetas de la banda, con el famoso gato impreso, se dejan ver por centenas en los conciertos de rock de todo el país. Unos conciertos que la propia banda protagoniza en muchas ocasiones, llenando cada vez recintos mas grandes, como absolutas estrellas, con pabellones a rebosar que corean cada una de sus canciones. El mas vivo reflejo de esa espectacular marea de gente que acude a sus shows fue “¿Hay Alguien Ahí?, un doble en directo que además les hace ganar un buen puñado de fans encandilados con el “Dolores Se Llamaba Lola”, descargado en ese ambiente de puro delirio, nuevas generaciones descubren a estos viejos rockeros. Como una locomotora sin intenciones de parar en ninguna estación se mostraba un grupo que pese a recibir con cada trabajo la certificación de oro no tenia intenciones de frenar en su ascensión. Y como tal poderoso tren humeante llegaron a “San Francisco Express”, otro nuevo éxito de ventas en 1997.
Two years later, in our Rockferendum at the end of the millennium, they are claimed to be the best live band of the century in Spain. That says it all about their magic on the stage. In 2000 “Vispera de Todos Los Santos” goes gold again, good news for the band and their company, which has seen how the Galicians have not sold less than 50,000 copies of any of their albums since they joined their staff. Now comes “Un Paso Atrás En El Tiempo”, a compilation of these last years of glory, tailor-made for their most loyal fans, who have chosen their favorite songs of the band to make up a release that promises to generate good sales again, putting the band back in the front line, defying those who blame them for the weight of the years. Yosi and his band are in their second youth, always Suaves!
Dos años mas tarde, en nuestro Rockferendum al acabar el milenio, son alegidos mejor banda en directo del siglo en España. Eso lo dice todo de su magia sobre las tablas. En el 2000 “Vispera de Todos Los Santos” vuelve a alcanzar el oro, una buena noticia para la banda y su compañía, que ha visto como los gallegos no han bajado de las 50.000 copias vendidas con ninguno de sus trabajos desde que pasaran a engrosar su plantilla. Ahora nos llega “Un Paso Atrás En El Tiempo”, un recopilatorio de estos últimos años de gloria hecho a medida para sus mas fieles seguidores, que han elegido sus temas favoritos de la banda para conformar un lanzamiento que promete volver a generar buenas ventas, colocando al grupo de nuevo en primera línea, desafiando a los que les echan en cara el peso de los años. Yosi y los suyos están en su segunda juventud. ¡Siempre Suaves!
