#50 History Of Rock Music: BARRICADA: BY INSTINCT.
One of the most classic bands of our scene. Barricada have achieved through hard work and an exemplary career to be considered as one of the basic pillars on which Spanish hard rock is based. Clear descendants of the most corrosive Leño, we could without problems award them great part of the paternity of what today is called urban rock, and they are therefore legitimate parents of many of the bands that swarm by our state at the present time. Sponsored by Rosendo himself and by the Ramoncin of the time (nothing to do with the “television” character he is now), the Barri began their career in the early 80's in their native Navarra, where they were elected best band of the land in 84, the same year they released “Barrio Conflictivo” with the collaboration of the aforementioned Mr. Mercado.
Una de las bandas mas clásicas de nuestra escena. Barricada han conseguido a base de trabajo duro y una trayectoria ejemplar el ser considerados como uno de los pilares básicos en los que se sustenta el rock duro español. Claros descendientes de los Leño mas corrosivos, podríamos sin problemas adjudicarles gran parte de la paternidad de lo que hoy se denomina rock urbano, y son por ello padres legitimos de muchas de las bandas que pululan por nuestro estado en la actualidad. Apadrinados por el propio Rosendo y por el Ramoncin de entonces (nada que ver con el personaje “televisivo” que es ahora), los Barri comenzaron su andadura a principios de los 80 en su Navarra natal, en donde fueron elegidos mejor grupo de la tierra en el año 84, el mismo año en que lanzaban “Barrio Conflictivo” con la colaboración del citado Sr. Mercado.
Before that, they had already released “Noches de Rock n' Roll”, their debut album. These first two albums were recorded by Mikel Astrain on drums, who unfortunately died a year later due to a cerebral infarction. In the tribute concert to his partner, Barricada already presented the definitive line-up of their career, with Fernando Coronado on drums and the well known “Boni”, “Drogas” and Alfredo Piedrafita. They would record the key album in the history of the band, “No Hay Tregua”, which would already give them a projection throughout the state and at the same time the sambenito of “non gratos” by the content of some of its lyrics as the one that gave title to the album.
Antes ya tenían en la calle “Noches de Rock n’ Roll”, su callejero debut. Estos dos primeros álbumes los grabaria Mikel Astrain en la batería, que desgraciadamente murió un año mas tarde a causa de un infarto cerebral. En el concierto de homenaje a su compañero, Barricada ya presentan la formación definitiva de su carrera, con Fernando Coronado en los tambores y los por todos conocidos “Boni”, “Drogas” y Alfredo Piedrafita. Estos grabarian el álbum clave de la historia de la banda, “No Hay Tregua”, que ya les daría una proyección por todo el estado y al tiempo el sambenito de “non gratos” por el contenido de alguna de sus letras como la que dio titulo al álbum.
The group begins to enjoy a remarkable popularity and their records are more and more requested by the fans. In the following “No Se Que Hacer Contigo”, first with Polygram, the label where they will live their greatest days of glory, they count again with the support of the master Rosendo, who is in charge of the production. The departure from RCA, their previous company, was due to the strong social and vindictive content of the band, which once again places them at the head of the combative rock groups that have proliferated in our frontiers, mainly in the north of the peninsula. With “Rojo” (1988) and “Pasion Por El Ruido” (1989) they are already considered the quintessence of our rock, the key band in a decade of splendor of hard sounds all over the world, curiously, Spain included.
El grupo comienza a gozar de una notable popularidad y sus discos cada vez son mas requeridos por los fans. En el siguiente “No Se Que Hacer Contigo”, primero con Polygram, el sello donde vivirán sus mayores días de gloria, vuelven a contar con el apoyo del maestro Rosendo, que se encarga de la producción. La salida de RCA, su anterior compañía, se produjo por el fuerte contenido reivindicativo y social de la banda, lo que de nuevo les coloca a la cabeza de los grupos de rock combativo que han proliferado en nuestras fronteras, principalmente en el norte de la península. Con “Rojo” (1988) y “Pasion Por El Ruido” (1989) ya son considerados la quinta esencia de nuestro rock, la banda clave en una década de esplendor de los sonidos duros en todo el mundo, curiosamente, España incluida.
Their importance in the record market transcends to all levels, and surely many young people of that time remember their nights out at any shouting match, litrona in hand, with the Barri sounding through the speakers. All that status achieved was reflected in “Barricada”, a live album also known as “Rocanrol” or simply with the defining appellation of “En Directo”. A vinyl slice, the acid sap of Barricada live, which became a milestone of rock 'n' roll macarrism. The 80s were coming to an end, the decade of which the band was already a symbol, an icon. The 90's would give us another handful of memorable albums and a great legion of groups that were born without stopping suckling on the legacy of the pamplonicas.
Su importancia en el mercado discográfico trasciende a todos los niveles, y seguro que muchos jóvenes de aquella época recuerda sus noches de marcha en cualquier grito, litrona en mano, con los Barri sonando por los bafles. Todo ese estatus conseguido se reflejo en “Barricada”, un álbum en directo también conocido como “Rocanrol” o simplemente con el definitorio apelativo de “En Directo”. Una loncha vinílica, la acida savia de los Barricada en vivo, que se convirtió en un hito del macarrismo rocanrolero. Terminaban los 80, la década de la que el grupo era ya todo un símbolo, un icono. Los 90 nos darían otro buen puñado de álbumes memorables de su factura y una gran legion de grupos que nacian sin parar mamando del legado de los pamplonicas.
“Por Instinto” meant changes in the group's sound, more limpid, and in the lyrics, which partly abandoned the social charge of yesteryear. Even so, a great urban hymn like “En Blanco y Negro” made this album become one of the best sellers of their career. With “Balas Blancas” more or less the same thing happened, and although a large sector of their fans complained about the group's willingness to accept mass media support, the title track continued to guarantee their statewide popularity bonanza. “La Araña”, album of which the single ‘Problemas’ and little else was saved, was a different matter, it is their last best seller, with which they came down from the pedestal and went to the rear of the biggest bands of the peninsula.
“Por Instinto” supuso cambios en el sonido del grupo, mas límpido, y en las letras, que abandonaban en parte la carga social de antaño. Aun asi un gran himno urbano como “En Blanco y Negro” les llevo a que este disco se convirtiera en uno de los mas vendidos de su carrera. Con “Balas Blancas” pasaría mas o menos lo mismo, y es que aunque ya un amplio sector de sus fans se quejaba de que el grupo aceptara de buen grado el apoyo mediatico masivo, el tema titulo siguió garantizando la bonanza de su popularidad estatal. “La Araña”, álbum del se salvaba el single “Problemas” y poco mas, fue harina de otro costal, es su ultimo superventas, con el se bajan del pedestal y pasan a la retaguardia de las formaciones mas grandes de la península.
The magnificent 95 compilation that collected all their singles and that was appropriately titled as “Los Singles” would discover their mythical songs to a whole generation, the rock quarry that has replaced or swelled the ranks of their faithful followers. Consequently, the double album was a sales success, as had been the case for a long time with their rounded albums. “Insolencia”, which was a step more of hardness that adapted the band to the new metallic canons of the time, was not as well received as the previous releases, so, what better than resorting to the old hits to attract the public back to the fold. “Salud & Rocanrol” would be the necessary revulsive, a reaffirmation of the band as a rock bastion of the scene.
El magnifico recopilatorio del 95 que recogia todos sus sencillos y que se titulo adecuadamente como “Los Singles” descubriría sus míticas canciones a toda una generación, la cantera rockera que ha sustituido o engordado las filas de su fieles seguidores. Consecuentemente el doble álbum fue un éxito de ventas, como lo venían siendo desde hace tiempo sus redondos. “Insolencia”, que supuso un paso mas de dureza que adapto a la banda a los nuevos canones metálicos de la época, no fue tan bien recibido como los anteriores lanzamientos, asi que, que mejor que recurrir a los viejos éxitos para atraer al publico de nuevo al redil. “Salud & Rocanrol” seria el revulsivo necesario, toda una reafirmación de la banda como bastion rockero de la escena.
It was a live show that gathered all their greatness live, demonstrating their value within the increasingly competent national rock market, their true magnitude within the roll. Until a couple of years ago we did not have their next album, but the return was devastating, with a “Accion Directa” sound totally adapted to the new times and without losing the identity of a lifetime. Even the Mtv, in its small rock space, programmed a video clip of the band, thus glimpsing an international potential of the Navarrese combo.
Era un directo que recogia toda su grandeza en vivo, demostrando su valia dentro del cada vez mas competente mercado rockero nacional, su verdadera magnitud dentro del rollo. De hecho acompañándoles en el escenario donde quedaron registrados sus surcos se juntaron tres generaciones de nuestro rock, el incombustible Rosendo, Yosi, el alma alcohólica de Los Suaves, y el gran Molly, cruda garganta de los Hamlet. Hasta hace un par de años no tuvimos su siguiente entrega discográfica, pero el regreso fue demoledor, con un “Accion Directa” de sonido totalmente adaptado a los nuevos tiempos y sin perder la identidad de toda la vida. Incluso la Mtv, en su pequeño espacio rockero, llego a programar algún videoclip de la banda, vislumbrando asi un potencial internacional del combo navarro.
“Besame”, is their most recent work, where it is clearly appreciated not only that the years do not weigh for the Barri, but also that the experience and the experience feel great. If you want to find the equivalent of some mythical bands of international rock in our land, do not doubt that the Barricada have many ballots to win the honorary title, both for quality, as for popular circulation and commercial success.
“Besame”, es su mas reciente obra, en donde se aprecia claramente no solo que los años no pesan para los Barri, sino que el cumplir tacos y experiencia les sienta de maravilla. Si se quiere encontrar el equivalente de algunas bandas míticas del rock internacional en nuestra tierra, no dudes que los Barricada tienen muchas papeletas para alzarse con el honorifico titulo, tanto por calidad, como por tirada popular y éxito comercial.
