#48 History Of Rock Music: PLATERO Y TU: AMAZING.
The Bilbao band Platero y Tu is undoubtedly one of the most commercially successful bands in our country - always talking about the rock scene - in the last few years. Their sympathy, their energetic and spontaneous rock, and their facility to record catchy hymns ideal for chanting in the bars on drunken nights have given very good results. And their friendship with Extremoduro, with whom they have forged strong ties, has helped both bands to considerably expand their audience and popularity. Who doesn't know these bands in Spain today? Let's see, let's see, I don't see any raised hand... Platero debuted in 91 with a record that was released very few copies and that nowadays is something almost anecdotal in their career.
Los bilbaínos Platero y Tu no cabe duda de que son una de las formaciones de mas tirada comercial en nuestro país – siempre hablando del ámbito rockero – de los últimos años. Su simpatía, su rock energético y espontaneo, y su facilidad para registrar himnos pegadizos ideales para corear en los baretos las noches de borrachera han dado muy buenos frutos. Y su amistad con Extremoduro, con los que han estrechado unos fuertes lazos, a ayudado a ambas bandas a ampliar considerablemente su publico y su popularidad. ¿Quién no conoce hoy en España a estos grupos? A ver, a ver, que no veo ninguna mano levantada… Platero debuto en el año 91 con un trabajo discográfico del que se editaron muy pocas copias y que hoy en dia es algo casi anecdótico dentro de su carrera.
That album was called “Burrock And Roll”, a first contact with their characteristic good rock and roll style, although without the spark that would reach their later releases. Nevertheless, the Dro label saw in them enough potential to add them to their ranks and build them a solid career. “Burrock And Roll” was re-released with improved sound, but their first proper album for their new home would be ‘Muy Deficiente’, released a year later, in 1992. With it, the group already began to be known among the rock parish, although they were still a promising second row band, something that they would solve with “Vamos Tirando” a year later.
Aquel disco se llamo “Burrock And Roll”, una toma de contacto con su característico buen hacer rocanrolero aunque sin la chispa que alcanzarían sus posteriores lanzamientos. Pese a todo el sello Dro vio en ellos potencial de sobra para añadirlos a sus filas y fabricarles una solida trayectoria. “Burrock And Roll” se reedito con sonido mejorado, pero su primer álbum en condiciones para su nueva casa seria “Muy Deficiente”, publicado un año mas tarde, en 1992. Con él el grupo ya comienza a ser conocido entre la parroquia rockera, aunque todavía no dejan de ser una prometedora formación de segunda fila, algo que solventarían con “Vamos Tirando” un año después.
A much more elaborated album, showing clear signs of identity and an overwhelming musical and text quality. With this album, Platero were already a consolidated group in the national scene, and their ascension would continue unstoppable with their next work, “Hay Poco Rock N' Roll”. Perhaps a definition of where the wind was blowing in the Spanish industry? Whatever it was, there were Fito and company, along with a few others, to ensure good guitars and funny and funny lyrics. The confirmation of their ascension would come from the hand of some unpublished sales figures until then, the work would become a gold record, an honor that would repeat all their subsequent albums.
Un disco mucho mas elaborado, mostrando unas señas de identidad claras y una calidad tanto musical como de textos abrumadora. Con este plástico, los Platero se muestran ya como un grupo consolidado en el panorama estatal, y su ascensión continuaría imparable con su siguiente obra, “Hay Poco Rock N’ Roll”. ¿Quiza una definición de por donde soplaba el viento en la industria española? Sea lo que fuere, ahí estaban Fito y compañía, junto a algunos mas, para asegurar unas buenas guitarras y unos textos vacilones y divertidos. La confirmación de su ascensión vendría de la mano de unas cifras de ventas inéditas hasta entonces, el trabajo llegaría a ser disco de oro, un honor que repetirán todos sus redondos posteriores.
“Voy A Acabar Borracho” was a reissue of their first album, with a changed cover and reworked songs, along with some new songs. Their friendship with the guys led by Robe Iniesta was already solid and consistent, so both groups decided to go on tour together, in what would be the first big tour of the rockers from Bilbao. In 1996 they started their joint tour, a success at all levels. From these concerts would be released the album that would be the great revulsive for Platero Y Tu, a double live album called “A Pelo”, which again reached the category of gold record. Its title said it all, simple and pure rock n' roll, far from studio touches and millionaire productions, sincerity to the surface.
“Voy A Acabar Borracho” fue una reedicion de su primer trabajo, con portada cambiada y temas retocados, junto a alguna canción nueva. Su amistad con los chicos liderados por Robe Iniesta ya era solida y consistente, por lo que ambos grupos deciden emprender una gira juntos, el lo que será el primer gran tour de los rockeros de Bilbao. En 1996 se pone en marcha su gira conjunta, un éxito a todos los niveles. De dichos conciertos saldría a la venta el disco que supondría el gran revulsivo para Platero Y Tu, un doble en directo llamado “A Pelo”, que volvió a alcanzar la categoría de disco de oro. Su propio titulo lo decía todo, simple y puro rock n’ roll, lejos de retoques de estudio y producciones millonarias, sinceridad a flor de piel.
That same year, Extremoduro, their “sister” band, released their successful “Agila”, the perfect excuse to embark on a new tour together. Although in the grooves of that live album one could appreciate the popular following of the public towards the band, chanting each and every one of their songs, it was really the success of Extremoduro, with whom they would also share guitar since then, Iñaki “Uoho” Anton, original member of Platero, what helped them incredibly to finish establishing themselves as undisputed greats of Spanish rock. Those two magical nights with a full house at the Palacio de Los Deportes in Madrid were nothing more than the definitive symptom of their growing fame, their absolute confirmation as a band.
Ese mismo año, Extremoduro, su banda “hermana”, publicaba su exitoso “Agila”, la excusa perfecta para volver a embarcarse juntos en una nueva gira. Si bien en los surcos de aquel álbum en vivo se apreciaba el seguimiento popular del publico hacia la banda, coreando todas y cada una de sus canciones, fue realmente el éxito de Extremoduro, con los que además compartirían desde entonces guitarra, Iñaki “Uoho” Anton, miembro original de Platero, lo que les ayudo increíblemente a terminar de establecerse como grandes indiscutibles del rock español. Aquellas dos mágicas noches de lleno absoluto en el Palacio de Los Deportes madrileño no eran sino el síntoma definitivo de su creciente fama, su confirmación absoluta como banda.
A year later and following the trend of one album per year, they released “7”, as its name suggests, their seventh album. A more mature album that nevertheless keeps them in a privileged position in the sales charts and in the hearts of the fans. Even the videoclip made to promote it, “Alucinante”, was broadcasted by the TV program equivalent to the criminal-radio channel that you all know. As you can see, when the flute of millions sounds, the same people always sign up. This contributed, as in the case of Extremoduro, to the fact that Platero y Tu's audience grew considerably among a sector with no relation whatsoever with rock and devoted to the radio show, an insignificant fact that has not made them lose their identity or their values at all. Their leader Fito Cabrales, seeing how well the adventure he had undertaken years before with his colleagues, Iñaki, Juancho and Jesus, decided to give free rein to his creativity during the band's rest period, and formed Fito y Los Fitipaldis, a sporadic project with which he has achieved very good commercial results with his two published albums, “A Puerte Cerrada” and the most recent “Los Sueños Locos”.
Un año mas tarde y siguiendo una tónica de disco por año, publican “7”, como su propio nombre indica, su séptimo trabajo. Un disco mas maduro que sin embargo les mantiene en una posición de privilegio en las listas de ventas y en los corazones de los fans. Incluso el videoclip facturado para promocionarlo, “Alucinante”, fue emitido por el programa televisivo equivalente a la cadena de radio – criminales que todos conocéis. Como veis cuando suena la flauta de los millones siempre se apuntan los mismos. Eso contribuyo, al igual que en el caso de Extremoduro, a que el publico de Platero y Tu se ampliara considerablemente entre un sector sin relación alguna con el rock y entregado a la radioformula, un dato insignificante que para nada les ha hecho perder su identidad ni sus valores. Su líder Fito Cabrales, viendo lo bien que marchaba la aventura que había emprendido años antes junto a sus colegas, Iñaki, Juancho y Jesus, decidio dar rienda suelta a su creatividad en el periodo de descanso de la banda, y formo Fito y Los Fitipaldis, un proyecto esporádico con el que ha conseguido muy buenos resultados comerciales con sus dos discos publicados, “A Puerte Cerrada” y el mas reciente “Los Sueños Locos”.
Los Fitipaldis have toured briefly in our country with a great affluence of public to their shows, another fact that reflects the greatness and the affection of the people towards this man and his mother band. As for the rest, their latest release has been “Correos”, another new success (they already seem to be chained...), a work that has also had a promotional campaign worthy of great stars, with television support included. But they are still those simple guys, ready to rock and roll with no complexes or pretensions other than mere fun. Who says now that there is little rock n' roll? God save Platero for many years to come.
Los Fitipaldis han girado brevemente por nuestro país con una gran afluencia de publico a sus shows, otro dato mas que refleja la grandeza y el cariño de la gente hacia este hombre y su banda madre. Por lo demás, su ultimo lanzamiento ha sido “Correos”, otro nuevo éxito (que ya parecen encadenados…), un trabajo que ha contado además con una campaña promocional digna de grandes estrellas, con apoyo televisivo incluido. Pero ellos siguen siendo esos tipos sencillos de a pie, dispuestos a rocanrolear sin complejos ni mas pretensiones que la mera diversión. ¿Quién dice ahora que hay poco rock n’ roll? Dios salve a Platero por muchos años.
