#47 History Of Rock Music: SKA-P: ONE SKAP VALVE.
One of the great irruptions of the rock market in Spain and at the same time, one of the groups that, in spite of everything, has suffered a more pronounced dissociation with the Hispanic hard rock public. Ska-P, as always happens as you will be able to see in many of the groups of our country here reviewed, have had to carry the weight of being branded as sellouts, clowns or mere pachanga by a good sector of the public. Fortunately they have enough strength and personality to let that slip and continue to do their thing, entertaining their people. About tastes... there is nothing written, and rivers of ink have already flowed about the band from Vallecas by now. Prejudices aside, they are currently one of the best selling bands in our market and even one of our most international bands. The group debuted without attracting much attention in 1995, with an album of the same name that went rather unnoticed, although it is also true that it was published by a small Catalan company called AZ Records.
Una de las grandes irrupciones del mercado del rock en España y paralelamente, uno de los grupos que, a pesar de todo, ha sufrido un desligamiento mas acusado con el publico de rock duro hispano. Ska-P, como siempre ocurre como podréis ver en muchos de los grupos de nuestro país aquí reseñados, han tenido que cargar con el peso de ser tachados de vendidos, payasos o mera pachanga por un buen sector del publico. Por suerte tienen la suficiente entereza y personalidad para que eso les resbale y seguir a lo suyo, divirtiendo a su gente. Sobre gustos… no hay nada escrito, y sobre la banda vallecana ya han corrido ríos de tinta a estas alturas. Prejuicios aparte, son actualmente una de las formaciones mas vendedoras de nuestro mercado e incluso una de nuestras bandas mas internacionales. El grupo debuto sin llamar mucho la atención en 1995, con un álbum homónimo que paso bastante desapercibido, aunque también es cierto que estaba publicado por una pequeña compañía catalana llamada AZ Records.
In spite of everything, the album made them earn a name for themselves in the street circuit, being distributed almost as a record label in some places of our country, such as the Rastro in Madrid, where Ska-P were for some time something like the soundtrack of the Sunday mornings in which the popular flea market was held. Word of mouth began to work, and their lighthearted songs began to catch on with the public. Rhythmic rock tinged with ska, and texts shelled with acidity and irony, very critical with some of the most typical references of the combative music of our land were their great assets.
Pese a todo, el disco les hizo ganarse un nombre en el circuito mas callejero, distribuyéndose casi con condición maquetera por algunos lugares de nuestros país, caso del Rastro madrileño, donde Ska-P fueron durante algún tiempo algo asi como la banda sonora de las mañanas de los domingos en los que se celebra el popular rastrillo. El boca a boca comenzó a funcionar, y sus canciones desenfadadas comenzaron a cuajar entre el publico. Rock rítmico teñido de ska, y textos desgranados con acidez e ironia, muy críticos con algunas de las mas tippicas referencias de la música combativa de nuestra tierra eran sus grandes bazas.
Curiously, and to everyone's surprise, a multinational company took notice of them. Were they going to let the opportunity of a lifetime pass them by? Of course not, but as always happens, they were showered with criticism from the usual four, who saw how they were kneeling before the recording power and left the independence. I would like to see more than one of them with their group in a similar situation... to see where that stupid purist philosophy would end up. Because did Ska-P move away from some of their clearest characteristics? Did they stop criticizing the “cañi” Spain of celebrity, soccer, trash politicians or the national holiday? Far from it, they did it with more strength if possible. But well, let's leave the discursions with no possible friendly resolution and let's focus on the band we are dealing with.
Curiosamente, y para sorpresa de todos, una multinacional se fijo en ellos. ¿Iban a dejar pasar la oportunidad de su vida? Por supuesto que no, pero como siempre ocurre, les llovieron las criticas de los cuatro de siempre, que veian como se arrodillaban ante el poder discográfico y salían de la independencia. A mas de uno me gustaría verle con su grupo en una situación parecida… a ver donde iba a parar esa estúpida filosofía purista. Porque ¿acaso se alejaron Ska-P de alguna de sus características mas claras? ¿Acaso dejaron de criticar a la España cañi del famoseo, el futbol, los políticos basura o la fiesta nacional? Ni mucho menos, lo hicieron con mas fuerza si cabe. Pero bueno, dejémonos de discursiones sin posible resolución amistosa y centrémonos en el grupo que nos traemos entre manos.
What happened was thanks to their marriage with RCA, their next work, “El Valls Del Obrero”, shot their sales and raised the name of Ska-P to a place of privilege next to the best of the national rock. The impressive sales figures would surpass by far those necessary to reach the platinum record, because that work would be dispatched nothing more and nothing less than more than 200,000 copies, something that far exceeded all expectations. One of the most known themes of the album and great culprit of its ascent was that plea in favor of the legalization of the marijuana that you all know and that is still sung from time to time in the partying of some nights when it goes with “el puntillo”. A sector of their audience was made up of people not at all akin to rock or to the band's principles, and by imbecile youngsters looking for some fun and revolution in their first nights out in the Malasaña neighborhood.
Lo que sucedió fue gracias a su matrimonio con RCA, su siguiente trabajo, “El Valls Del Obrero”, disparo sus ventas y alzo el nombre de Ska-P a un lugar de privilegio junto a lo mas granado del rock nacional. Las impresionantes cifras de venta llegarían a superar de lejos las necesarias para alcanzar el disco de platino, pues de aquel trabajo se despacharían nada mas y nada menos que mas de 200.000 copias, algo que desbordo con creces todas las expectativas. Uno de los temas mas conocidos del álbum y gran culpable de su ascensión fue ese alegato a favor de la legalización de la marihuana que todos conocéis y que se sigue cantando de vez en cuando en el cachondeo de algunas noches cuando se va con “el puntillo”. Un sector de su publico paso a estar compuesto por gente nada afin al rock ni a los principios de la banda y por imberbes jovenzuelos buscando algo de diversión y revolución en sus primeras noches de marcha por el barrio de Malasaña.
But what matters is that they had before them a loyal following ready to follow the band until the end of the world, even if they could not remove from people's eyes the prejudiced slate that weighed on the band due to the factors already mentioned. However, the release of their next work, “Eurosis”, made things clear. Another great success in sales, and the possibility of playing in many places beyond our borders, something that many national bands can not boast. Argentina, Mexico, France, Italy... Europe and Latin America surrender to their rhythm and their fun concerts, becoming one of the national bands with more performances outside Spain. In countries like France or Italy also nourish their legion of fans with a good number of loyal followers, as evidence there is no more than approaching the network and see how it is one of the few of our groups that has web pages in the language of the neighboring country and the one spoken in the peninsula in the form of boot.
Pero lo que importa es que había por delante de ellos unos seguidores fieles dispuestos a seguir al grupo hasta el fin del mundo aunque no consiguieran quitar de los ojos de la gente la prejuiciosa losa que pesaba sobre el grupo debido a los factores ya nombrados. Sin embargo, el lanzamiento de su siguiente obra, “Eurosis”, ya dejo las cosas claras. Otro gran éxito de ventas, y la posibilidad de marcharse a tocar en multitud de sitios mas alla de nuestras fronteras, algo de lo que muchas bandas estatales no pueden presumir. Argentina, Mexico, Francia, Italia… Europa y Latinoamerica se rinden a su ritmo y sus divertidos conciertos, convirtiéndose asi en una de las bandas nacionales con mas actuaciones fuera de España. En países como Francia o Italia además nutren su legion de fans con un buen numero de leales seguidores, como evidencia no hay mas que acercarse a la red y ver como es uno de los pocos de nuestros grupos que cuenta con paginas web en el idioma del país vecino y el hablado en la península en forma de bota.
That greatness both inside and outside Spain would continue to increase with “Planeta Eskoria”, their most furious album to date. The band from Vallekas (with a “k”, yes sir), who have taken their love for their neighborhood and their team, Rayo, to territories all over Spain “and part of abroad”, already have their next album on the starting grid. Next month we will be able to enjoy a new attack on power and injustice in their typical festive tone, without losing any of the hardness shown in “Planeta Eskoria”. The AFYVE charts are already starting to shake, and even the USA is preparing for the possible invasion of these guys. That's Ska-P, one of our best representatives abroad. Where they are, politicians be damned. As for the rest, “whoever wants to criticize, let him criticize”. To us, plin, and to them too, I guess.
Esa grandeza tanto dentro como fuera de España seguiría en aumento con “Planeta Eskoria”, su plástico mas rabioso hasta la fecha. Los de Vallekas (con “k”, si señor), que han llevado de bandera el amor por su barrio y su equipo, el Rayo, por los territorios de toda España “y parte del extrenjero” ya tienen en la parrilla de salida su próximo trabajo. El mes que viene podremos disfrutar de un nuevo ataque al poder y la injusticia en su típico tono festivo, sin perder un apice de la dureza mostrada en “Planeta Eskoria”. Las listas de la AFYVE ya comienzan a temblar, e incluso EEUU se prepara para la posible invasión de estos tipos. Asi son Ska-P, uno de nuestros mejores representantes en el extranjero. Donde estén ellos que se quiten los políticos. Por lo demás “el que quiera criticar que critice”. A nosotros, plin, y a ellos supongo que también.
