The underground and the hangover of Nirvana's success have also borne fruit in Spain, and Dover is the clearest example. The rise of the independent companies, of the indie labels, was also developing here when the US scene was already living glorious times. Some of these labels have become over time important firms that have served as a launching pad for a handful of groups. The maximum representatives of that generation are Dover, a group that carved their reputation in small companies before their jump to the multinational that protects them. A band led by girls, specifically two sisters, Cristina and Amparo Llanos, practicing a mixture of rabid punk rock and guitar grunge is a clear product of the 90s.
El underground y la resaca del éxito de Nirvana también han dado sus frutos en España, y Dover es el ejemplo mas claro. El auge de las compañías independientes, de los sellos indie, se desarrollaba también aquí cuando en la escena USA ya vivía tiempos gloriosos. Algunas de estas discográficas se han convertido con el paso del tiempo en importantes firmas que han servido de lanzadera a un puñado de grupos. Los máximos representantes de esa generación son Dover, un grupo que se labro su reputación en pequeñas compañías antes de su salto a la multinacional que les ampara. Una banda liderada por chicas, concretamente dos hermanas, Cristina y Amparo Llanos, practicando una mezcla de punk rock rabioso y grunge guitarrero es un claro producto de los 90.
Apparently both women worked in a clothing store and decided to form a band and call it with the name of one of the brands they marketed, Dover. They got down to work, recruiting a couple of young men for the rhythmic base, and they started to develop their first album after having played on a few stages. Caroline Records published “Sister”, which went totally unnoticed in the national rock scene, although it served the Subterfuge label as irrefutable proof that it was worth betting heavily on the group. Devil Came To Me” would be the bombshell that would awaken the ears of an unusual number of teenagers and that would make Dover and the company that had trusted in them taste the sweetness of success. The title track was included in a commercial spot and that was the definitive confirmation of their commercial explosion. Tracks like “Serenade” or “Devil Came To Me” were the highlight of the nights out in any club in Madrid.
Por lo visto ambas féminas trabajaban en una tienda de ropa y decidieron formar una banda y llamarla con el apelativo de una de las marcas que comercializaban, Dover. Se pusieron manos a la obra, reclutando un par de mozos para la base rítmica, y se lanzaron a gestar su primer trabajo tras haberse pateado unos cuantos escenarios. Caroline Records les publica “Sister”, que pasa totalmente desapercibido en el panorama rockero estatal, aunque le sirve al sello Subterfuge como prueba irrefutable de que valia la pena apostar fuerte por el grupo. Y vaya si darían en el clavo. “Devil Came To Me” seria el bombazo que despertaría los oídos de un numero inusitado de adolescentes y que haría saborear las mieles del éxito a Dover y a la compañía que había confiado en ellos. El tema titulo se colo en un spot comercial y esa fue la confirmación definitiva de su explosión comercial. Temas como “Serenade” o el propio “Devil Came To Me” eran el punto álgido de las noches de juerga en cualquier garito madrileño.
When that guitar riff sounded, the crowd went crazy with calimocho in hand. Their fame rose like the foam, and even their videoclips were shown in a television that was not too prone to give rock music a chance. But that was a phenomenon that turned Dover into an already consecrated promise, one of the most renowned rock bands in Spain and one of the best sellers of all time. With a status already at such a high level, it was clear that they were not going to lack record offers, and so came the opportunity to give their music a greater outlet with a multinational, as well as singing in English allowed a possible export to the powerful American market.
Cuando sonaba aquel riff de guitarra, la peña se volvia loca calimocho en mano. Su fama subio como la espuma, e incluso sus videoclips se dejaban ver en una televisión no demasiado propensa a dar cancha al rock. Pero es que aquello era todo un fenómeno, que convirtió a Dover en una promesa ya consagrada, en uno de los grupos de rock de mas renombre de España y en uno de los mas vendedores de todos los tiempos. Con un estatus ya de tal nivel, las ofertas discográficas estaba claro que no iban a faltarles, y asi llego la oportunidad de dar mayor salida a su música con una multinacional, ya que además el cantar en ingles permitia una posible exportación al poderoso mercado americano.
But as it always happens, there was no shortage of those who threw themselves on them for renouncing their origins once they knew the smell of money... the never-ending story. Finally they found their way to EMI-Chrysalis, keeping their “independent” identity by keeping their own label, Loli Jackson, whose label would coexist since then with that of the powerful company. In spite of everything, the closed sector of followers that gave them the back for that circumstance was a minority in front of the immense number of fans gained not only among the rock tendencies, another point that would devalue them for many. But well, “Late At Night”, their next album, would again have a great support in sales in spite of the fact that they hardened their sound, thus silencing possible critics.
Pero como siempre ocurre, no falto quien se les echo encima por renunciar a sus orígenes una vez conocido el olor del dinero… el cuento de nunca acabar. Finalmente dieron con sus huesos en EMI-Chrysalis, manteniendo su identidad “independiente” al hacer pervivir su propio sello, Loli Jackson, cuya etiqueta conviviría desde entonces con la de la poderosa compañía. Pese a todo, el cerrado sector de seguidores que les dieron la espalda por esa circunstancia era una minoría frente al inmenso numero de fans ganados no solo entre las tendencias rockeras, otro punto que les desvalorizaría para muchos. Pero bueno, “Late At Night”, su siguiente álbum, volveria a contar con un gran respaldo en ventas a pesar de que endurecieron su sonido acallando asi posibles criticas.
Their tours are becoming more and more multitudinous, the calls from the other side of the pond - including the Warped, an American traveling punk festival - growing in number, their situation in the charts again excellent... come on, you couldn't ask for things to be better. So much has been their growth in recent times, that last year, they re-released their little known first work, which had become a sought after piece by fans. At the same time, their latest album to date, “I Was Dead For 7 Weeks In The City Of Angels” was released, which in just over a week had already sold 125,000 copies. Its extensive title does not reflect anything other than the hell lived in the recording of the same in the musical mecca of most of the rock bands throughout history, Los Angeles, where Dover moved to develop a work of high levels of hardness, in conditions worthy of a reputable international band. But aren't they? Good luck, and to continue on the right path, and, most importantly, turning a deaf ear to the envious.
Sus giras cada vez mas multitudinarias, las llamadas del otro lado del charco – incluido el Warped, festival estadounidense, itinerante y de punk – creciendo en numero, su situación en listas de nuevo excelente… vamos, que no se podía pedir que las cosas fueran mejor. Tanto ha sido su crecimiento en los últimos tiempos, que el pasado año, se reedito su poco conocido primer trabajo, que se había convertido en una buscada pieza por los fans. Paralelamente vio la luz su ultimo disco hasta la fecha, “I Was Dead For 7 Weeks In The City Of Angels”, que el algo mas de una semana ya había despachado 125.000 copias. Su extenso titulo no refleja otra cosa que el infierno vivido en la grabación del mismo en la meca musical de gran parte de las bandas de rock a lo largo de la historia , Los Angeles, hasta donde Dover se desplazaron para gestar un trabajo de altas cotas de dureza, en condiciones dignas de reputada banda internacional. Pero es que ¿acaso no lo son? Mucha suerte, y a seguir por el buen camino, y, lo mas importante, haciendo oídos sordos a los envidiosos.
