#44 History Of Rock Music: MAGO DE OZ: THEY ARE BASTARDS...

Few would have bet on them but there they are. Although there will be those who from the beginning said that they were a great band and that they would go far, their gradual rise to the top has surely caught more than one by surprise. As far as heavy metal is concerned, not since the glorious times of Baron Rojo has a Spanish band achieved such recognition and sales success in our country. Mago de Oz, step by step, with a lot of sweat and tears, have managed to make a place for themselves in the pathetic Spanish industry, a praiseworthy achievement in a country that is becoming more and more slimy and tacky in musical matters.

Based on effort, confidence and a good vibe with their people that has led them to win a wide audience, the Mago are currently the tip of the iceberg of the peninsular metal. Their work has cost them to get where they are, nobody has given them anything for free. Since the band was formed in the early 90's they have come a long way. In 1992 they were finalists in the “Villa de Madrid”, and that opened the door to a record contract, which led them to record their first album in 1994, with their first singer, Juanma. The departure of this one forced to look for a substitute to the voice and the election could not be more successful. The great Jose took over the position with his exquisite vocal technique, and little by little he has been consolidating himself as one of the best singers in the metal scene.

With it the Mago would record their first work of commercial impact, “Jesus de Chamberi”, a true rock opera full of hooky songs treated in the peculiar way of the group, that is to say, classic heavy with a medieval air and folk touches thanks to the omnipresent violin of Mohamed, one of the most notable characteristics of the band. The reception of the album was excellent, exceeding all the expectations of the musicians and their company, Locomotive, which had found a stronghold in Madrid. So much was the expectation created that the group was forced by popular demand to re-record and re-release their first work, and thus avoid the search of the same to some fans capable of removing Rome with Santiago to get that work.

When the defunct Chancellor recorded a full house at the presentation of the album, it seemed all was said and done, the Mago were the new sensation of Hispanic rock. But the best was yet to come. A year later, in 1998 would come “La Leyenda de La Mancha”, another huge album in their already classic line up. Their intense tour throughout the state (115 concerts in national territory) made them win fans in every corner of Spain, forging a legion of followers that would show their gratitude and support in future events. So when in the year 2000 their double album “Finisterra” was released, a conceptual work about the end of the world developed in the Camino de Santiago, the response of those enthusiastic followers was unquestionable. The album registered best-selling figures, having already exceeded 150,000 copies sold (platinum certification in our country).

Far from rigged promotional campaigns that try to sell the pretty boy to use and throw away, Mago de Oz had earned themselves, with their sympathy, the affection of the people, and that was demonstrated in the live apotheosis in Madrid with their three consecutive concerts at La Riviera in the capital. Three nights hanging the “no tickets” sign while international bands and world-renowned artists leave tickets unsold at the same venue. Impressive show of force. Currently, their fame has transcended the borders of rock, and the Mago has a public in all areas.

Their company, Locomotive, has experienced such a boom thanks to the group that it has gone from being an independent label like so many others to become a record company of international projection. Besides, the Mago have broken our frontiers, and apart from having also got the Latin American public in their pocket, they have attracted the attention of half of Europe, so they were even called to participate in the prestigious German Wacken Festival where they were surrounded by all possible controversies (this summer they are going to Bang Your Head) and enjoyed the privilege of collaborating with the metal queen par excellence, the great Doro Pesch, who showed at all times very interested in the group, with whom she has developed strong ties. “Folktergeist” is their live album, which a few weeks after its release was already a gold record. Nowadays, no traditional metal band in our territory has the circulation of Mago.
