#42 History Of Rock Music: KORN: THEY WERE AT FAULT.
The mother band of the metal revolution. In 1994, the public had more than forgotten the hard rock explosion of the previous decade, the alternative sounds and grunge had been consolidated. In this context Korn knew how to offer a highly original product, and that is saying a lot considering that we are talking about the years of unlikely fusions in rock. Each new band wanted to surprise the world with their virtues, but the Californians took the cake. A highly charged and sickly sound, with a bestial intensity and tearing, with unrestrained guitars, paranoid voices, sharp rhythm changes and thunderous drums in which one could appreciate the ascendencies of all colors and flavors, including jazz. All that explosive cocktail was conveniently shaken to give one of the most visionary and imitated albums of the last years, Korn's eponymous debut.
La banda madre de la revolución un metalera. En 1994 el gran publico tenia mas que olvidada la explosión del hard rock de la década previa, los sonidos alternativos y el grunge se habían consolidado. En este contexto Korn supo ofrecer un producto sumamente original, y eso es decir mucho teniendo en cuenta que estamos hablando de los años de las fusiones inverosímiles en el rock. Cada nueva banda quería sorprender al mundo con sus virtudes pero los californianos se llevaron el gato al agua. Sonido altamente cargante y enfermizo, de intensidad y desgarro bestial, de guitarras destensadas, voces paranoicas, cambios de ritmo acusadísimos y batería atronadora en la que se apreciaban ascendencias de todos los colores y sabores incluido el jazz. Todo aquel explosivo coctel se agito convenientemente para dar uno de los discos mas visionarios e imitados de los últimos años, el homónimo debut de Korn.
A plastic that would attract the attention of all and sundry, conquering with force the youth of America. Debtors of Faith No More, Sepultura, thrash, hardcore, hip hop and almost any existing sonority, they showed from the beginning a unique personality that turned them into an orthodox but above all novel path to walk on. Their image, with sporty clothes, wide pants and dreadlocks and impossible braids would also fit remarkably among the youngest, who have been adopting more and more a clothing that they made fashionable. “Blind” was the most radiated song of that album, and one of their best compositions to this day. With the respect of the metal parish, divided between the rage of proposals in vogue and the strict purist taste, Korn were already one of the greats.
Un plástico que llamaría la atención de propios y extraños, conquistando con fuerza a la juventud de America. Deudores de Faith No More, Sepultura, el thrash, el hardcore, el hip hop y casi cualquier sonoridad existente, mostraron desde el principio una personalidad única que les convirtió en una senda ortodoxa pero ante todo novedosa por la que caminar. Su imagen, con ropas deportivas, anchos pantalones y rastas y trenzas imposibles también cuajaría notablemente entre los mas jóvenes, que cada vez han ido adoptando mas una vestimenta que ellos pusieron de moda. “Blind” fue la canción mas radiada de aquel plástico, y una de sus mejores composiciones hasta el dia de hoy. Con el respeto de la parroquia metalica, dividida entre el furor de propuestas en boga y el estricto gusto purista, Korn ya eran de los grandes.
They continued to exploit their “freaky” side in “Life Is Peachy”, a second work that would definitely open the doors of the “new metal” Olympus. The rock media in full echoed that record success of 1996, which was presented in society in one of the most important alternative festivals in America, the Lollapalloza. With the next release, “Follow The Leader”, and its impressive video clips, they were already one of the biggest bands in the universe, with millionaire sales and a large legion of fans and detractors. “Got The Life” was constantly played on the radio halfway around the world, showing us that Korn were back with their batteries charged, and ‘Freak On A Leash’ was a hit on Mtv. Up to that point we could say that they had no rivals and were a truly unique band, as was evidenced by their unloading on stage at Woodstock '99.
Su lado mas “freaky” lo siguieron explotando en “Life Is Peachy”, una segunda obra que les abriría definitivamente las puertas del olimpo del “nuevo metal”. Los medios rockeros en pleno se hicieron eco de aquel suceso discográfico de 1996, que fue presentado en sociedad en uno de los festivales alternativos mas importantes de America, el Lollapalloza. Con el siguiente disparo, “Follow The Leader”, y sus impactantes videoclips, ya eran una de las bandas mas grandes del universo, con ventas millonarias y numerosa legion, tanto de fans como de detractores. “Got The Life” fue radiado constantemente en medio planeta, haciéndonos ver que Korn habían vuelto con las pilas cargadas, y “Freak On A Leash” fue todo un éxito en la Mtv. Hasta ese momento podríamos decir que no tenían rivales y eran una banda realmente única, su descarga en el escenario de Woodstock’ 99 asi lo evidencio.
As always happens when someone triumphs in a new way, the imitators were not going to take long to arrive trying to take a piece of the cake. Thus the one-metal trend was created, with dozens of groups that have monopolized and saturated the rock market and sales. Despite remaining the best-selling band they have been since their beginnings, Korn have fallen into the vicious circle that they themselves have created, and although there is no doubt about their paternity of the fashionable style in metal, they themselves have ended up being one more band in the crowd within the scene, instead of trying to break away from their clones. That tiresome sonic “snowball” launched by themselves and in which they had been trapped was reflected in a weaker than usual round called “Issues”, their last album to date, which despite everything was a new machine of manufacturing pain in sales, with the single “Falling Away From Me” heading to the charts. They are metallic dinosaurs that are difficult to surpass in popularity anywhere in the world, and their greatness will surely continue to be confirmed with “Untouchables”, their comeback album, in which, however, they don't recover nearly as much of their past magic. It's a pity to have to throw something in the face of one of the most influential and important bands of the hard sounds in the last ten years.
Como siempre ocurre cuando alguien triunfa de forma novedosa, los imitadores no iban a tardar en llegar intentando llevarse un trozo del pastel. Asi se crearía la corriente del un metal, con decenas de grupos que han acaparado y saturado el mercado y las ventas de rock. Pese a seguir siendo la banda superventas que han sido desde sus comienzos, Korn han caído en el vicioso circulo que ellos mismos han creado, y aunque no hay dudas acerca de su paternidad del estilo de moda en el metal, ellos mismos han terminado por ser una banda mas del monton dentro de la escena, en lugar de intentar desmarcarse de sus clones. Esa cansina “bola de nieve” sonora lanzada por ellos mismos y en la que habían quedado atrapados se reflejo en un redondo mas flojo de lo acostumbrado llamado “Issues”, su ultimo plástico hasta la fecha, que pese a todo fue una nueva maquina de fabricar dolores en ventas, con el sencillo “Falling Away From Me” encamarándose a las listas. Son unos dinosaurios metálicos a los que es difícil superar en popularidad en cualquier lugar del mundo, y seguramente su grandeza seguirá constatándose con “Untouchables”, su regreso discográfico, en el que sin embargo no recuperan ni de lejos la magia pasada. Lastima tener que echarle algo en cara a una de las bandas mas influyentes e importantes de los sonidos duros en los últimos diez años.
