#41 History Of Rock Music: METALLICA: VS METALLICA WHO WILL BE NEXT?.
Few bands have taken heavy metal to every corner of the planet as much as Metallica. Their own name already indicates the fierceness of their music, more evident in past times. The four horsemen are one of the most popular formations of the roll and music in general, for some years they shared the absolute leadership of the genre with Guns And Roses, but when these dismembered, the San Francisco continued with the crown on their heads until their more than controversial metamorphosis. For all this they owe them respect and admiration, and of course, eternal gratitude for having attracted many young people to the ranks of metal for years, feeding the faith and the taste of the fans for the hard sounds.
Pocas bandas han llevado el heavy metal por bandera a todos los rincones del planeta como Metallica. Su propio nombre ya indica la fiereza de su música, mas evidente en épocas pretéritas. Los cuatros jinetes son una de las formaciones mas populares del rollo y de la música en general, durante algunos años compartieron el liderato absoluto del genero con Guns And Roses, pero cuando estos se desmembraron, los de San Francisco siguieron con la corona sobre sus cabezas hasta que llego su mas que polémica metamorfosis. Por todo ello se les debe respeto y admiración, y por supuesto, eterno agradecimiento por haber ido atrayecdo a las filas del metal a muchos jóvenes durante años, alimentando la fe y el gusto de los fans por los sonidos duros.
Maybe that's why their reconversion was so discussed, because many felt deceived and did not see anyone else capable of being the emblem of a style that has not returned to have visible heads like the one they, together with the “Pistols and the Roses”, represented in the first half of the 90s. Their trajectory and evolution is worthy of being analyzed, and since that bestial and wild “Kill 'Em All” (curiously presented with a more assimilable single for its time, “Jump In The Fire”, which nevertheless did not transcend), still with pimples on their faces, they have not left anyone indifferent for one reason or another, reasons that in those years were strictly musical and now include other aspects not so attractive.
Quizá por eso su reconversión fuera tan discutida, pues muchos se sintieron engañados y no veian a nadie mas capaz de ser el emblema de un estilo que no ha vuelto a tener unas cabezas visibles como la que ellos, junto a las “Pistolas y las Rosas”, representaron en la primera mitad de los 90. Su trayectoria y evolución es digna de ser analizada, y desde aquel bestial y salvaje “Kill ‘Em All” (curiosamente presentado con un single mas asimilable para su tiempo, “Jump In The Fire”, que sin embargo no trascendio), todavía con espinillas en sus rostros, no han dejado a nadie indiferente por unas razones u otras, motivos que en aquellos años eran estrictamente musicales y ahora abarcan otros aspectos no tan atractivos.
Kirk Hammet was the last to arrive, replacing Dave Mustaine, and although he brought an overwhelming technique with the guitar, contributing to create the characteristic sound of the group, the great leaders were always James Hetfield, vocalist and frontman, and Lars Ulrich, drummer and boss in the shadow. Combining their taste for NWOBHM and the fastest metal and punk that could be billed, they became the tip of the iceberg of thrash, a movement that in the mid 80's threatened to overthrow the foundations of traditional metal. Visualizing the cover of “Ride The Lightning” was like seeing them live, an incessant blast, a forceful and unstoppable blast of killer guitars, although it was then when they received the first criticisms for a supposed commerciality - on that occasion and during the years to come from the emerging thrashers hordes - due to concessions such as the mid-tempo “Fade To Black” or the instrumental “The Call Of Ktulu”.
Kirk Hammet fue el ultimo en llegar, sustituyendo a Dave Mustaine, y aunque aporto una técnica apabullante con la guitarra, contribuyendo a crear el característico sonido del grupo, los grandes lideres siempre fueron James Hetfield, voz cantante y pose al frente, y Lars Ulrich, batería y jefe en la sombra. Aunando su gusto por la NWOBHM y por el metal y el punk mas rápido que se pudiera facturar, se convirtieron en la punta del iceberg del thrash, un movimiento que a mediados de los 80 amenazo con derrumbar los cimientos del metal tradicional. Visualizar la portada de “Ride The Lightning” era como verles en directo, una ráfaga incesante, un relanpago contundente e imparable de guitarras asesinas, aunque fue entonces cuando recibieron las primeras criticas por una supuesta comercialidad – en aquella ocasión y durante los años venideros llegadas desde las emergientes hordas thrashers – debido a concesiones como los medios tiempos “Fade To Black” o el instrumental “The Call Of Ktulu”.
What we mean by this is that accusations of selling out have haunted the band - in constant evolution - since before most of you reading this article had ever listened to Metallica, although it is also true that the majority verdict of fans dictates that their current compositional level is far from the one they reached in their first ten years of life. “Master Of Puppets”, the LP that brought them transatlantic fame, is still for many their masterpiece. It is the last work with bassist Cliff Burton, who died in an accident suffered by the bus in which the band was traveling. This album took them to the stage of Donington, one more step for their consecration. With the arrival of ex Flotsam & Jetsam, Jason Newsted, the sound evolves, becoming heavier and less fast, although we are still talking about pure heavy music. One”, an epic song contained in ‘And Justice For All’ of which they made the first videoclip of their career, would make them win their first Grammy, becoming one of the most popular bands of the moment, with fans capable of giving their lives for the group.
Con esto lo que queremos decir es que las acusaciones de vendidos han perseguido a la banda – en constante evolución – desde antes de que la mayoría de los que ahora mismo leeis este articulo hubierais escuchado a Metallica, aunque también es cierto que el veredicto mayoritario de los fans dicta que actualmente su nivel compositivo esta lejos del que alcanzaron en su primeros diez años de vida. “Master Of Puppets”, el LP que les dio la fama transatlántica, sigue siendo para muchos su obra maestra. Se trata del ultimo trabajo con el bajista Cliff Burton, que fallecio en un accidente sufrido por el autobús en el que viajaba la banda. Este disco les llevo al escenario de Donington, un paso mas para su consagración. Con la llegada del ex Flotsam & Jetsam, Jason Newsted, el sonido evoluciona, se torna mas pesado y menos rápido, aunque seguimos hablando de heavy en estado puro. “One”, un épico tema contenido en …And Justice For All” del que hicieron el primer videoclip de su carrera, les haría ganar su primer Grammy, convirtiéndose en una de las bandas mas populares del momento, con enfervorizados fans capaces de dar la vida por el grupo.
The sales of their albums were increasing, although they definitely exploded with the 12 million copies of the massive “Metallica”, their homonymous album of 1991, essential to understand the decade to which it belongs, a more accessible album, but full of strength and great songs, including one of the key themes of their career, the anthem “Enter Sandman”, but without forgetting the slow “The Unforgiven” and “Nothing Else Matters”. “The Black Album” is how it is known by its dark cover, an aesthetic that would adopt the four members of the group, and that they would show off on the stage of Donington once again, this time as absolute stars. The world was at their feet, their songs were known by all, their videos were endlessly rotating on MTV, and the Grammy of that year was sung, it was for them. That a style like heavy metal, always ignored by the media, accumulated so many successes, was a deserved victory for a band that was already a giant of modern music, and so it was demonstrated on the stage of a Woodstock” 94 to which they would return five years later in very different conditions, although before the change they also went through a Donington where they still showed their wildest side.
Las ventas de sus discos cada vez eran mayores, aunque explotan definitivamente con los 12 millones de copias que lleva hoy por hoy el multitudinario “Metallica”, su homónimo álbum del 91 imprescindible para comprender la década a la que pertenece, un disco mas accesible, pero lleno de fuerza y grandes canciones, entre las que cabe destacar uno de los temas clave de su carrera, el himno “Enter Sandman”, aunque sin olvidar los pausados “The Unforgiven” y “Nothing Else Matters”. “El álbum Negro” es como se le conoce por su oscura portada, una estética que adoptarían los cuatro miembros del grupo, y que llevarían a gala sobre el escenario de Donington una vez mas, esta vez como absolutas estrellas. El mundo estaba a sus pies, sus temas eran conocidos por todos, sus videos rotaban sin cesar por la MTV, y el Grammy de aquel año estaba cantado, fue para ellos. Que un estilo como el heavy metal, siempre ignorado por los medios, acumulara tantos éxitos, era una merecida victoria para una formación que era ya un gigante de la música moderna, y asi lo demostró en el escenario de un Woodstock” 94 al que volverían cinco años mas tarde en condiciones bien distintas, aunque antes del cambio también pasaron por un Donington en el que todavía mostraron su faceta mas salvaje.
And then it happened. When they were at the peak of their career, and fans were waiting expectantly for their next move to sweep the store shelves and take home their next album, Metallica decided to evolve, to change, at the risk of losing their longtime fans. Five years after that magnificent work that had brought them to the top, they released “Load”, the album of the great controversy. Metallica cut their hair and that was taken as an offense and a clear gesture of abandonment to the heavy metal that had seen them born and grow. Their sound is still hard, rock, but without the power of yesteryear, and more songs with classic vocation are missing. The work, in spite of reaching the number 1 in the charts, is far from even equaling half of the figures reached by its predecessor. Now Metallica more than ever are a band “for all audiences” and they are branded as sell-outs due to songs like the mellow “Hero of the Day” or the country “Mama Said”, they are no longer the favorite sons of metal. They carry the same name but for many, starting with the change of logo, they are another band, and the disappointment increases with the discographic continuation. “Reload”, which belonged to the same recording sessions, pisses off even more their longtime fans, many turn their backs on them, and the album sells a million less than the previous one, despite topping the charts again.
Y entonces sucedió. Cuando estaban en la cumbre de su carrera, y los fans esperaban expectantes su próximo movimiento para arrasar las estanterías de las tiendas y llevarse a casa su próximo disco, Metallica decide evolucionar, cambiar, con el peligro de perder a sus incondicionales mas veteranos. Cinco años después de aquella magnifica obra que les había aupado a lo mas alto, publican “Load”, el disco de la gran controversia. Metallica se cortan las melenas y eso se toma como una ofensa y un claro gesto de abandono al heavy metal que les había visto nacer y crecer. Su sonido sigue siendo duro, rockero, pero sin la potencia de antaño, y se echan en falta mas temas con vocación de clásicos. El trabajo, pese a llegar al n° 1 en listas, se queda lejos de siquiera igualar la mitad de las cifras alcanzadas por su predecesor. Ahora Metallica mas que nunca son un grupo “para todos los públicos” y se les tacha de vendidos debido a temas como el meloso “Hero of the Day” o el country “Mama Said”, ya no son los hijos predilectos del metal. Llevan el mismo nombre pero para muchos, empezando por el cambio de logo, son otra banda, y la decepcion aumenta con la continuación discográfica. “Reload”, que pertenecia a las mismas sesiones de grabación, cabrea aun mas a sus seguidores de siempre, muchos les dan la espalda, y el álbum vende un millón menos que el anterior, pese a coronar de nuevo las listas.
Their partial “reconciliation” with the fans takes place with “Garage Inc.”, revision of their mythical Ep “Garage Days” to which they add a second album with new versions of many classic hard rock and metal bands. They win again a Grammy for their interpretation of Thin Lizzy's “Whiskey In The Jar”, although a significant fact is that they compete in the category of “best hard rock performance” when until then they had done it in the category of metal, a curiosity that will give the reason to those who affirm that this was another band. A band that earns the vituperation of a large sector of the public when they fight against all odds against the free music server on the Internet, Napster, which brings to light the love of Lars Ulrich for the vile metal. From being the referent of a style they become one of the most questioned bands in the rock world. Anyway “Garage Inc.
Su “reconciliación” parcial con los fans se produce con “Garage Inc.”, revisión de su mitico Ep “Garage Days” al que añaden un segundo álbum con nuevas versiones de muchas bandas clásicas del hard rock y el metal. Vuelven a ganar un Grammy por su interpretación del “Whiskey In The Jar” de Thin Lizzy, aunque un dato significativo es que compiten en la categoría de “best hard rock performance” cuando hasta entonces lo habían hecho en la de metal, una curiosidad que dara la razón a los que afirman que esa era otra banda. Una banda que se gana a pulso el ser vituperados por un gran sector de publico cuando lucha contra viento y marea contra el servidor de música gratuita de internet, Napster, que saca a luz el amor de Lars Ulrich por el vil metal. De ser el referente de un estilo pasan a ser una de las formaciones mas cuestionadas del mundo del rock. De todas formas “Garage Inc.”
It competes in sales with the controversial “Loads”, and after that the band embarks on an ambitious project, to adapt their songs to be played with an orchestra. So they do it, and the album “S&M” is the testimony of the mythical concert. As with their previous album, they climb the charts to second place and win a new Grammy, recently reaching 41 million copies in sales between all their albums. But the tension and the changes of course of the last years fracture them seriously, losing Newsted, who leaves the band, while Hetfield enters a rehabilitation center for his incipient alcoholism. At this moment they are supposed to be in the process of recording a new album that will clarify once and for all if the band that once reigned supreme and unrivaled in heavy metal deserves to continue wearing the crown for some more time.
Compite en ventas con los polémicos “Loads”, y tras el la banda se embarca en un ambicioso proyecto, adaptar sus canciones para ser tocadas junto a una orquesta. Asi la hacen, y el disco “S&M” es el testimonio del mitico concierto. Como con su anterior plástico, escalan las listas hasta el segundo puesto y ganan un nuevo Grammy, alcanzando recientemente unas cifras de 41 millones de copias en ventas entre todos sus discos. Pero la tensión y los cambios de rumbo de los últimos años les fracturan gravemente, perdiendo a Newsted, que se marcha de la banda, mientras Hetfield ingresa en un centro de rehabilitación por su incipiente alcoholismo. En estos momentos se les presupone en el proceso de grabación de un nuevo disco que aclarara de una vez por todas si la banda que un dia reino por todo lo alto y sin rival alguno en el heavy metal merece seguir llevando la corona por algún tiempo mas.
