#30 History Of Rock Music: THE OFFSPRING: AMERICAN JOKERS.
Maybe Offspring are even more responsible than any other band for the fact that nowadays we find “melodic punk” groups in every corner. Their success not only made them world famous and millionaires, but also led to the rise of a record label, Epitaph, which has exported a hundred groups of the style. For their part, the multinationals did not take long to look for their own replicas. When talking about Offspring we would have to talk about the validity of the punk label always comparing them with the original movement of the late 70s. Let's stop classifying bands -many times it's not beneficial- and simply talk about hard rock, with a lot of guitar presence, great melodies, and the speed of punk. Lovers of Ramones, The Damned and other classics, they began to make a name for themselves in the underground with their first work 'Homónico' and the later 'Ignitio', two works full of fun, good vibes and adrenaline.
Puede que Offspring sean incluso más responsables que cualquier otra banda de que ahora nos encontremos con grupos de “punk melódico” en cada esquina. Su éxito no sólo les hizo mundialmente famosos y millonarios a ellos, sino que supuso el alza de una discográfica, Epitaph, que ha exportado un centenar de grupos del estilo. Por su parte las multinacionales no tardaron en buscar sus propias réplicas. Al hablar de Offspring tendríamos que hablar de la validez de la etiqueta punk siempre comparándolos con el movimiento original de finales de los 70. Dejemos de clasificar a las bandas –muchas veces no es beneficioso- y hablemos simplemente del rock duro, con mucha presencia guitarrera, grandes melodías, y la velocidad del punk. Amantes de Ramones, The Damned y demás clásicos, comenzaron a hacerse un nombre en el underground con su primer trabajo ´Homónico´ y el posterior ´Ignitio´, dos obras plagadas de cachondeo, buen rollo y adrenalina.
The turn of the industry propitiated by Nirvana did not touch them fully, but undoubtedly favored their worldwide recognition with 'Smach', which swept the charts in many countries and pulverized the sales of their rivals thanks to two of their singles, “Come out and play” and “Selfsteem”. It was 1994, the “new punk” had just been born. But if we listen carefully, the album was a real hard rock exercise, rabid and with verve, although endowed with the punk casualness. They were doing what they liked, and it had no special commercial appeal until it exploded and they began to be labeled as sellouts.
El giro de la industria propiciado por Nirvana no les tocó de lleno, pero sin duda favoreció su reconocimiento mundial con ´Smach´, que arrasó las listas de muchos países y pulverizó las ventas de sus rivales gracias a dos de sus sencillos, “Come out and play” y “Selfsteem”. Era 1994, el “nuevo punk” acababa de nacer. Pero si escuchamos atentamente, el disco era un verdadero ejercicio hardrockero, rabioso y con brío, aunque dotado del desenfado punk. Hacían lo que les gustaba, y no tenía un especial encanto comercial hasta que explotó y se les empezó a tachar de vendidos.
As always, 'Ixnay On The Hombre' didn't even reach the sales figures of 'Smach', it was far from it. It was a darker and less accessible work, though still with the imprint of a group worthy of praise for the move, intentional or not. On the other hand with 'Americana' and 'Conspiracy Of One' they have made clear a level of conformism quite high, as if they kept on this without ambitions that go beyond money and mere popularity, approaching the image of surfers and “rollito skate” with which has been linked to the melodic hardcore movement for some years.
Como siempre.´Ixnay On The Hombre´ no es que siquiera alcanzara las cifras de ventas de ´Smach´, es que se quedó bastante lejos. Era un trabajo más oscuro y menos accesible, aunque todavía con la impronta de un grupo digno de elogiar por la jugada, intencionada o no. Por otro lado con ´Americana´ y ´Conspiracy Of One´ han dejado claro un nivel de conformismo bastante elevado, como si mantuvieran en esto sin ambiciones que vayan más allá del dinero y la mera popularidad , acercándose a la imagen de surferos y “rollito skate” con la que se ha vinculado al movimiento del hardcore melódico desde hace unos años.
Some of their songs are heard in video games, their latest singles, their latest singles and video clips are ridiculous, but their albums are still very well received. Maybe we will have them there for a long time, we accept for the popular majority that lives to the rhythm of Mtv, but in spite of everything their own drummer has reviewed that maybe the next album will be the last one of the band. If so, let's hope that they retire with dignity, returning to the style that has fed them, and stop the nonsense, because it is in their hands to continue to be among the greatest of recent rock.
Algunas de sus canciones se escuchan en videojuegos, sus últimos singles, sus últimos singles y videoclips razón el ridículo, pero sus discos siguen teniendo muy buena acogida. Tal vez les tengamos durante bastante tiempo ahí, aceptamos por la mayoría popular que vive a ritmo de Mtv, pero pese a todo su propio batería ha reseñado que tal vez el próximo disco sea el ultimo de la banda. Si asi fuera, esperemos que se retiren dignamente, volviendo al estilo que les ha dado de comer, y se dejen de tonterías, pues en sus manos esta el seguir figurando entre los mas grandes del rock reciente.
