#28 History Of Rock Music: DEF LEPPARD: CONSIGNED TO OBLIVION.
Unlike Iron Maiden, Saxon and other stars of the NWOBHM, the name Def Leppard has fallen into disuse, it is a band too ignored by the new generations, who should not have heard of their prowess, a group that would deserve the attention of the rock parish in full in each of their movements. But nowadays they are almost a second rate band, when they have always been one of the top heavy metal bands. In fact their sales figures are on a par with those of Bon Jovi, with 31 million copies sold, and although they are partly to blame for the loss of popularity due to certain not too successful maneuvers in their career, they have never reached the “reconversive” pathos of other bands, and yet they have been relegated to oblivion.
A diferencia de Iron Maiden, Saxon y otras estrellas de la NWOBHM, el nombre de Def Leppard ha caído en desuso, es una banda demasiado ignorada por las nuevas generaciones, que no han debido oir hablar de sus proezas, un grupo que merecería la atención de la parroquia rockera en pleno en cada uno de sus movimientos. Pero en cambio en la actualidad son casi una banda de segunda, cuando siempre han sido uno de los grupos punteros del heavy metal. De hecho sus cifras de ventas se equiparan a las de todo unos Bon Jovi, con 31 millones de copias vendidas, y aunque ellos son en parte culpables de la perdida de popularidad debido a ciertas maniobras no demasiado acertadas en su carrera, nunca han alcanzado el patetismo “reconversivo” de otras bandas, y sin embargo se les he relegado al olvido.
They have always been a band with an overwhelming personality and an uncommon energy. They were one of the most enrockerized combos of that British metal scene of the early 80's, something like the English AC/DC, although they would soon acquire their own distinguishable character. Their first albums are a delight for the ears, full of attitude and great songs, especially the one that for many is still their cathedral work, “Pyromania”, which literally swept the charts in '83, taking other bands out of the way with astonishing ease.
Siempre han sido una formación con una aplastante personalidad y una energía fuera de los común. Eran uno de los combos mas enrockerizados de aquella escena metalica británica de principios de los 80, algo asi como los AC/DC ingleses, aunque pronto adquirirían un carácter propio y diferenciable. Sus primeros álbumes son una delicia para los oídos, plagados de actitud y grandes temas, especialmente el que para muchos sigue siendo su obra catedralicia, “Pyromania”, que literalmente arraso en listas en el año 83, quitándose del medio a otras formaciones con una facilidad pasmosa.
The Leppards would live years of glory, reigning supreme in the United States. MTV was beginning to enthrall young Americans, who could see the band in action in their clip of “Photograph”, a song that curiously never made it big in Great Britain, to the band's regret, who saw how they easily conquered the arduous American market but could not make it in their homeland. It would be a matter of time. But when everything was going smoothly, tragedy struck them for the first time in their history, drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in an accident, although with the support of his mates and a specially designed drum kit he continued to sit behind the drums of the band, and surprised everyone with his eagerness to excel at the Donington Festival in 1986, where the Leppards made the audience fall in love with them.

La MTV empezaba a embobar a los jóvenes americanos, que pudieron ver a la banda en acción en su clip de “Photograph”, un tema que curiosamente nunca llego a hacerse grande en la Gran Bretaña para pesar de la banda, que veía como conquistaban con facilidad el arduo mercado americano pero no lograban cuajar en su patria. Seria cosa de tiempo. Pero cuando todo iba como la seda la tragedia se ceba con ellos por primera vez en su historia, el batería Rick Allen pierde un brazo en un accidente, aunque con el apoyo de sus compañeros y una batería especialmente diseñada sigue sentado tras los tambores del grupo, y sorprende a todos con su afán de superación en el festival de Donington del 86, donde los Leppard enamoraron a la audiencia.
Already in 1987, the world music scene was dominated by American metal and hard rock bands, with the backcombed hairstyles and the continuous powerful hits on the radio. Def Leppard also wanted to contribute with a magnanimous work called “Hysteria”, with a production and songs that do not pass the years. Their frontman Joe Elliot, one of the pillars of the band, dyed his hair blond according to the times, but the band did not give in to the fashion and kept on producing some amazing melodies and guitar passages. With “Love Bites”, a touching ballad, they would reach number 1, and sales would skyrocket incredibly.
Ya en 1987, la escena musical mundial estaba dominada por las bandas de metal y hard rock estadounidenses, con los peinados cardados y los continuos hits potentes en la radio. Def Leppard también quisieron contribuir con una magnánima obra llamada “Hysteria”, portadora de una producción y unos temas por los que no pasan los años. Su frontman Joe Elliot, uno de los pilares de la banda, tiño de rubio sus melenas acorde a los tiempos que corrian, pero ni mucho menos la banda se entrego a la moda y siguió facturando unas melodías y pasajes guitarreros de escándalo. Con “Love Bites”, una emocionante balada, alcanzarían el n°1, y las ventas se dispararían increíblemente.
Nowadays “Hysteria” has sold 12 million copies, and few bands can compete with that, except for the biggest ones, among which we should include Leppard without discussion. But then comes the definitive blow, the second hard blow in their career, which is even harder than the one caused by Allen's unfortunate handicap. In 1991 they lose one of their bastions, the guitarist Steven Clark, a guy full of talent, really gifted for the composition and the guitar, who says goodbye definitively to this world because of alcohol and drugs and leaves the band on the edge of the abyss.
Actualmente “Hysteria” lleva despachadas 12 millones de copias, y pocas bandas pueden competir con eso, excepto las mas grandes, entre las que deberíamos incluir sin discursion a los Leppard. Pero entonces llega el mazazo definitivo, el segundo golpe fuerte de su trayectoria, que es mas duro todavía que el que supuso la desgraciada minusvalía de Allen. En 1991 pierden a uno de sus bastiones, el guitarrista Steven Clark, un tipo plagado de talento, realmente dotado para la composición y la guitarra, que dice adiós definitivamente a este mundo por culpa del alcohol y las drogas y deja a la banda al borde del abismo.
Vivian Campbell is the substitute that tries to make Clark forget, for many the band has never been able to overcome his loss, because with him went in a certain way the magic that he gave to the band. Vivian Campbell es el sustituto que intenta hacer olvidar a Clark sin conseguirlo, para muchos la banda nunca ha logrado sobreponerse a su perdida, pues con el se fue en cierta forma la magia que imprimía a la banda. Pero seguían siendo una de las formaciones de rock mas grandes del planeta y no podían defraudar a sus fans, asi “Adrenalize”, cinco años después de su ultima colección de canciones, volvió a ofrecernos grandes temas (“Let’s Get Rocked”, “Make Love Like A Man”) en su línea de rock duro cada vez mas propenso a emitirse por las ondas radiofónicas. A partir de ahí empiezan a perder fuelle, y se les ve demasiado el plumero con “Two Steps Behind”, el pegajoso tema incluido en la banda sonora de “The Last Action Hero”, que luego también aparecería en su álbum de rarezas, caras B y algunas novedades “Retro Active”. Era la hora de echar la vista atrás.
“Vault” was their obligatory ‘Greatest Hits’, an album that would show their legacy to the youngsters of the 90's, who may have never heard of the band. The album is a sales success, with 3 million copies sold that continue to increase today, which means that people didn't completely forget about them after “Slang” (1996), an unworthy album in which like many others, they tried to evolve, cut their hair, and “fucked up”. That's why maybe they tried in vain to recover the lost credit with “Euphoria” four years ago, a much more successful album in which they returned to their purely rocker roots. As we said before, now they are not one of the most popular bands on the scene, but their excellent concerts, which are always state-of-the-art in lighting and sound, rarely disappoint. In addition, their Billboard status with some of their albums at this point, and above all, their irreproachable background and exceptional legacy keep them in the lead pack waiting for them to return in style and reclaim what has always been theirs.
“Vault” fue su obligado “Greatest Hits”, un álbum que enseñaría su legado a los jóvenes de los 90, que tal vez nunca habían oído hablar de la banda. El álbum es un éxito de ventas, con 3 millones de copias vendidas que continúan aumentando hoy en dia, lo que quiere decir que la gente no se olvido del todo de ellos tras “Slang” (1996), un indigno álbum en el que como muchos otros, trataron de evolucionar, se cortaron las melenas, y “la cagaron”. Por eso quizá intentaran en balde recuperar el crédito perdido con “Euphoria” hace ya cuatro años, un álbum mucho mas acertado en el que volvieron por sus fueros puramente rockeros. Como dijimos antes, ahora no son uno de los grupos mas populares de la escena, pero sus excelentes conciertos, que siempre están a la ultima en iluminación y sonido, pocas veces defraudan. Además su mantenimiento en el Billboard con algunos de sus álbumes a estas alturas, y sobre todo, su irreprochable bagaje y excepcional legado les mantienen en el pelotón de salida a la espera de que vuelvan por todo lo alto reclamando lo que siempre ha sido suyo.
