When Van Halen appeared on the scene in the late 70's, there was simply no one who could stand up to them. A year earlier punk had turned the rock world upside down, but the short-lived bands had left the music scene barren, the great dinosaurs had fallen and the “new generation” had passed out of sight and out of mind. Van Halen was born to reign. A band that lived by and for rock n' roll and whose ultimate goal was simple and plain fun. It was the great American band, they had no rivals and they were bursting with energy and vitality.
Cuando Van Halen aparecieron en escena a finales de los 70, sencillamente nadie podía hacerles frente. Un año antes el punk había puesto patas arriba el mundo del rock, pero la efímera duración de sus bandas había dejado yermo el panorama musical, los grandes dinosaurios habían caído y la “nueva generación” había pasado vista y no vista. Van Halen había nacido para reinar. Una banda que vivía por y para el rock n’ roll y cuyo ultimo cometido era la simple y llana diversión. Era la gran banda americana, no tenían rivales y ellos llegaban rebosantes de energía y vitalidad.
Eddie Van Halen discovered an unlimited world of possibilities for guitarists all over the world, and with “Eruption” he made many rethink their possibilities with the electric guitar. And of course, at the front, the great Diamond Dave, a superior frontman, a hyperactive singer capable of getting in the pocket of any audience and having enough energy to take a few “females” to the dressing rooms. Their first LP was chosen by some critics in the USA as the best debut album of all times, and the truth is that it is not for less, wonderful compendium of the characteristic sound of the band, very personal, ingenious and unique, with the harmonics, tappings and riffs of Eddie, the thumping and alcoholic bass of Michael Anthony, the drums of Alex, and the cockiness, the carefree and the attitude of Californian playboy beach boy of David Lee Roth.

Y por supuesto, al frente, el gran Diamond Dave, uno frontman superior, un hiperactivo cantante capaz de meterse en el bolsillo a cualquier audiencia y sobrarle energía para llevarse a unas cuantas “hembras” a los camerinos. Su primer Lp fue elegido por algunos críticos en USA como el mejor disco debut de todos los tiempos, y la verdad es que no es para menos, maravilloso compendio del característico sonido de la banda, personalísimo, ingenioso y único, con los armonicos, tappings y riffs de Eddie, el bajo golpeante y alcoholico de Michael Anthony, la batería de Alex, y la chulería, el desenfado y la actitud de playboy playero californiano de David Lee Roth.
It reached number 19 in the charts and managed to sell two million copies, a figure that continues to increase today, when it already holds the accolade of having sold a whopping 10 million. That band could not stop, they were there to make people enjoy, to bring the heat of summer to any season, to make the libido explode in the body of the teenagers of the time. Their later works, full of hymns and good vibes, would keep them at the top until the middle of the eighties. What vinyls those were! “Van Halen II”, full of freshness and vitality, ‘Women And Children First’, full of sexual rhythm by Roth and Co., ‘Fair Warning’, with Mr. Edward's guitar burning in flames, and ‘Diver Down’, with frenetic hip movement, made them famous and millionaires.
Alcanzo el numero 19 en listas y logro despachar dos millones de copias, cifra que sigue aumentando hoy en dia, cuando ya ostenta el galardón de haber vendido la friolera de 10 millones. Aquella banda no podía parar, estaban allí para hacer disfrutar a la gente, para llevar el calor del verano a cualquier estación, para hacer explotar la libido en el cuerpo de los adolescentes de la época. Sus posteriores trabajos, plagados de himnos y buenas vibraciones, les mantendrían en todo lo alto hasta mitad de la década de los ochenta. ¡Vaya vinilos aquellos! “Van Halen II” plagado de frescura y vitalidad, “Women And Children First”, lleno de ritmo sexual a cargo de Roth y Co., “Fair Warning”, con la guitarra de Mr. Edward ardiendo en llamas, y “Diver Down”, de frenetico movimiento de caderas, les hicieron famosos y millonarios.
And when they were at the top, the best was yet to come. “1984”, their album of that same year, would reach the million sales figures of their wonderful debut, thanks in great part to that contagious single that invited to jump, ‘Jump’, where the guitars were relegated to the background by some marching keyboards that served as opening for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles that year. Unfortunately that would be the last plastic of the blond singer with the group, because he left to continue strutting solo with a band of scandal (Steven Vai, Billy Sheenan, Greg Bisonette), while Van Halen recruited Sammy Hagar, who had done a formidable job in the first albums of Montrose and had a worthy solo career behind him.
Y cuando estaban en la cima, todavía quedaba lo mejor. “1984”, su álbum de aquel mismo año, alcanzaría las millonarias cifras de ventas de su maravilloso debut, gracias en gran parte a aquel contagioso single que invitaba a saltar, “Jump”, donde las guitarras quedaban relegadas a un segundo plano por unos marchosos teclados que sirvieron de apertura a los Juegos Olimpicos de Los Angeles de aquel año. Desgraciadamente ese seria el ultimo plástico del rubiales cantante con el grupo, pues se marcho a seguir pavoneándose en solitario con una banda de escándalo (Steven Vai, Billy Sheenan, Greg Bisonette), mientras Van Halen reclutaba a Sammy Hagar, que había hecho un formidable trabajo en los primeros álbumes de Montrose y tenia una digna carrera solista a sus espaldas.
Nothing was ever the same again, but they continued in good shape with Hagar at the helm, although already oriented towards a more standard American rock, in which the overwhelming charisma of Diamond Dave was missing. In spite of everything, the albums continued selling millions by themselves, they maintained the type with “5150” and “OU812” (in fact this last one reached the number one in the Yankee lists), but “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” (that brought them problems because the initials of its title formed the word “Fuck”) and “Balance” did not fulfill the expectations of many fans.
Ya nada volvió a ser lo mismo, pero continuaron en buena forma con Hagar al frente aunque ya orientados hacia un rock americano mas estándar, en el que se echaba de menos el arrollador carisma de Diamond Dave. Pese a todo, los discos seguían vendiendo millones por si solos, mantuvieron el tipo con “5150” y “OU812” (de hecho este ultimo llego al numero uno en las listas yanquis), pero “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” (que les trajo problemas porque las iniciales de su titulo formaban la palabra “Fuck”) y “Balance” no cumplieron las expectativas de muchos fans.
Sammy Hagar would leave the band after the release of the live double album “Right Here, Right Now” and the band went through its worst moments. But they were still great, their past exploits were not forgotten, and this was confirmed by the compilation “Best Of. Vol I”, which included songs from both eras of the band, and which collected as much money in sales as the last two studio albums, with two million copies sold and a number 1 in the United States. David Lee Roth had recorded two new songs with the group of his life, which appeared on the compilation, but the reunion did not last long, and the band acquired the services of ex-Extreme Gary Cherone.
Sammy Hagar se marcharia de la banda tras la edición del doble en directo “Right Here, Right Now” y la banda vivio sus peores momentos. Pero seguían siendo grandes, no se olvidaba sus proezas pasadas, y asi lo confirmo el recopilatorio “Best Of. Vol I”, que comprendía canciones de las dos épocas de la banda, y que recaudo el mismo dinero en ventas que los dos últimos trabajos en estudio, con dos millones de copias vendidas y un numero 1 en los States. David Lee Roth había grabado dos nuevos temas con el grupo de su vida, que aparecieron en dicho recopilatorio, pero la reunión no duro mucho, y la banda se hizo con los servicios del ex-Extreme Gary Cherone.
The thing did not take off from the beginning, being the album they recorded with him, “Van Halen III”, the least sold album of their career, with only half a million copies sold in the USA, something unworthy for a band of Van Halen's caliber. After the scare Eddie gave us recently announcing his cured cancer disease, and when his discography has been recently remastered and certified with 50 million copies sold in total, it has become feasible a summer tour with Diamond Dave and Sammy Hagar sharing the stage in turns (we'll see how long they last...) that with a little luck will revive the glory days when Van Halen became true giants of hard rock.
La cosa no cuajo desde el principio, siendo el álbum que grabaron junto a el, “Van Halen III”, el menos vendido de su carrera, con tan solo medio millón de copias USA despachadas, algo indigno para una banda del calibre de Van Halen. Después del susto que nos dio Eddie hace poco anunciando su ya curada enfermedad cancerígena, y cuando su discografía ha sido recientemente remasterizada y certificada con 50 millones de ejemplares vendidos en total, se ha hecho factible una gira veraniega con Diamond Dave y Sammy Hagar compartiendo por turnos el escenario (veremos lo que duran…) que con un poco de suerte revivirá los días de gloria en que Van Halen se convirtieron en autenticos gigantes del rock duro.
