#24 History Of Rock Music: SCORPIONS: NEXT CANE PLEASE.
The Scorpions of metal seem to be coming back from a bad period. Too much discredited among a sector of the heavy public that labels them as major rock “ballers” despite the guitar power of the Germans, the Scorps are still in the breach after thirty years of success, being one of the biggest heavy metal bands of the Old Continent. Their career is impeccable, their anthems are counted by dozens, and their classic albums are an indispensable and introductory reference to the hard rock of the 70s and 80s.
Their years of greatest splendor were undoubtedly the eighties, the ideal framework for a band of their characteristics to triumph, but they had been active since the late sixties although their first album did not arrive until 1972. Lonesome Crow', a work in which they had not yet found their definitive personality, showed excellent manners by one of the best singers that has given the roll, Klaus Meine, and two guitarist brothers of incredible fluency, Michael and Rudolf Schenker.
Los escorpiones del metal parecen estar resurgiendo de una mala época. Demasiado desprestigiados entre un sector del público heavy que les etiqueta como “baladeros” mayores del rock pese a la potencia guitarrera de los alemanes, los Scorps siguen en la brecha después de treinta años de éxitos, siendo una de las bandas de heavy metal más grandes del Viejo Continente. Su trayectoria es impecable, sus himnos se cuentan por decenas, y sus álbumes clásicos son una referencia indispensable e introductoria al hard rock de los años 70 y 80.
Sus años de mayor esplendor fueron sin duda los ochenta, el marco ideal para que una banda de sus características triunfara, pero llevaban en activo desde finales de los 60 aunque su primer disco no llegara hasta 1972. ´Lonesome Crow´, un trabajo en el que todavía no habían encontrado su personalidad definitiva, mostraba unas maneras excelentes por parte de uno de los mejores cantantes que ha dado el rollo, Klaus Meine, y dos hermanos guitarristas de increíble soltura, Michael y Rudolf Schenker.
The first and youngest of the two would not take long to join the ranks of UFO after the tour they shared with them in '73, but another talent would arrive to take the embers out of the fire, the crazy Uli Jon Roth, the maximum Hendrix wannabe of the time, lost in his travels and space paranoias. With him they would record four albums that would make them a name in the scene, especially if we talk about 'In Trance' (1975) that meant their international recognition. It was the best-selling album of the multinational RCA in Japan up to that date, a country where they were already well known. Their next album, 'VirginKiller', was elected Lp of the year in their native Germany, and with 'Taken By Force' they launched themselves to the European conquest; conquest that paradoxically they would achieve with a live double recorded in Japanese lands, 'Tokyo Tapes', after which Roth decided to continue without direction.
El primero y más joven de ambos no tardaría mucho en ingresar en las filas de UFO tras la gira que compartieron con ellos en el 73, pero otro talento llegaría para sacar las brasas del fuego, el pirado Uli Jon Roth, el máximo aspirante a Hendrix de la época, perdido en sus viajes y paranoias espaciales. Con él grabarían cuatro discos que les irían haciendo un nombre en la escena, sobre todo si hablamos de ´In Trance´ (1975) que supuso su reconocimiento internacional. Fue el álbum más vendido de la multinacional RCA en Japón asta aquella fecha, país donde ya se les tenía muy en cuenta. Su siguiente plástico, ´VirginKiller´, fue elegido Lp del año en su Alemania Natal, y con ´Taken By Force´ se lanzaron a la conquista europea; conquista que paradójicamente lograrían con un doble en directo grabado en tierras niponas, ´Tokyo Tapes´, tras el cual Roth decidió seguir sin rumbo.
Michael Schenker made an attempt to return to his brother's lap with 'Lovedrive', but Matthias Jabs was not about to let go of a position that was already his. The band consolidated its position by opening for Genesis in Germany, and with the beginning of the 80's they stormed the USA. Animal Magnetism' was the prelude to 'Blackout', for many their peak, an album of clear strength and overwhelming metallic presence that went straight into the Top Ten. The single “No One Like You” guaranteed them platinum. Two years later would come the definitive explosion of the Teutonic power in America: 'Love At First Sting' would arrive in charts where their two previous albums still remained. Scorpions had three albums in the charts simultaneously, and they were no inflated American band, but a German combo that crossed borders with the beauty and power of their compositions.

La banda se consolida teloneando a Génesis por Alemania, y con la entrada de los 80 asaltan USA. No pudieron empezar mejor. ´Animal Magnetism´ fue el preludio de ´Blackout´, para muchos su cima, un disco de fuerza neta y arrolladora presencia metálica que entró directo al Top Ten. El single “No One Like You” les garantizó el platino. Dos años más tarde llegaría la explosión definitiva del poder teutón en América. ´Love At First Sting´ arribaría en unos charts en donde todavía se mantenían sus dos trabajos anteriores. Scorpions tenían ¡tres discos en listas simultáneamente!, y no eran ningún inflado grupo americano, sino un combo alemán que traspasaba fronteras con la belleza y la potencia de sus composiciones.
Two of them would give them the absolute triumph in the rock of the time. For the hardest fans there was “Rock You Like A Hurricane”, a firecracker with a riff straight to the chest and an ideal chorus to chant with your fist in the air. But undoubtedly, the big hit would be “Still Loving You”, a long ballad that would win the hearts of lovers and teenagers all over the world and would open the door to a type of compositions that the band would cultivate more and more often. The single of that song alone would sell 1.7 million copies, thus skyrocketing the sales of the aforementioned LP.
Dos de ellas les darían el triunfo absoluto en el rock de la época. Para los fans más duros estaba “Rock You Like A Hurricane”, un petardazo de riff directo al pecho y estribillo ideal para corear con el puño en alto. Pero sin duda, el gran suceso sería el de “Still Loving You” extensa balada que se haría con los corazones de enamorados y adolescentes en todo el globo y abriría la veda de un tipo de composiciones que la banda cada vez cultivaría más a menudo. Sólo el single de aquella canción vendería 1. 7 millones de copias, disparando así mismo las ventas del susodicho Lp.
At this time few heavy metal bands could match the Germans. They had just participated in the multitudinous US Festival of '83, with the almighty Van Halen as headliners, and the following year they had a guaranteed place at Rock In Rio, as well as at Donington Park twelve months later. After performing on the most prestigious stages on earth, they return to the studio, and 'Savage Amusement' crowns them as N° 1 in Europe, reaching also a very honorable third position in the US charts. Their participation as big stars of the Moscow Peace Festival would be another high point of their career, and not only for participating in an event of that category, but also because that act would inspire them to write a song that would be another success in their unstoppable career. We are talking about “Winds of Change”, another heartfelt piece, which would be the key to a somewhat weaker work in general, 'Crazy World', although that is the least of it if we say that this single was the most successful song of 1991, reaching No. 1 in 11 countries.
En estos momentos pocas bandas de heavy metal podían equipararse a los alemanes. Acababan de participar en el multitudinario US Festival del 83, con los todopoderosos Van Halen como cabeza de cartel, y al año siguiente tenían plaza garantizada en el Rock In Río, así como en Donington Park doce meses más tarde. Tras pisar los más prestigiosos escenarios de la tierra, vuelven al estudio, y ´Savage Amusement´ les corona como N° 1 en Europa, alcanzando también una muy honorable tercera posición en listas USA. Su participación como grandes estrellas del Moscow Peace Festival sería otro punto álgido de su carrera, y no solo por participar en un evento de dicha categoría, sino porque aquel acto les iba a inspirar la composición de una canción que iba a suponer otro golpe de éxito a su imparable carrera. Hablamos de “Winds of Change”, otra pieza y sentida, que sería la clave de un trabajo algo más flojo en general, ´Crazy World´, aunque eso es lo de menos si decimos que dicho single fue la canción de mayor éxito de 1991, alcanzando el N° 1 en 11 países.
From there, curiously, their fall would begin, and 'Face The Heat, 'Pure Instinct', and especially 'Eye To Eye' would not fulfill the expectations of the fans, passing with more pain than glory in a few years that already looked the other way, trying to forget the heavy greatness of the era immediately preceding in time. But as standards of their country, this would be the one in charge of giving them a new push, and their concert in the Brademburg Gate in the tenth anniversary of the German unification, programmed within the Expo 2000 of Hannover, would be the chosen frame to record 'Moment Of Glory', their work together with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, a work excellently received by its originality and its mastery at the time of fusing rock and classical music. The Scorpions were at the top again, new generations were approaching their legacy and their radius of influence had expanded enormously over the years thanks to the overwhelming commercial success of their ballads and the release of occasional 'Best Of', the last of them also during the year of the Expo.
A partir de ahí comenzaría su caída, curiosamente, y ´Face The Heat, ´Pure Instinct´, y especialmente ´Eye To Eye´ no colmarían las expectativas de los fans, pasando con más pena que gloria en unos años que ya miraban hacia otro lado, intentando olvidar la grandeza heavy de la era inmediatamente anterior en el tiempo. Pero como estándares de su país, sería éste el encargado de darles un nuevo empujón, y su concierto en la Puerta de Brademburgo en el décimo aniversario de la unificación alemana, programado dentro de la Expo 2000 de Hannover, sería el marco elegido para grabar ´Moment Of Glory´, su trabajo junto a la Orquesta Filarmónica de Berlín, un trabajo excelentemente acogido por su originalidad y su maestría a la hora de fusionar el rock y la música clásica. Los Scorpions volvían a estar en la cumbre, nuevas generaciones se acercaban a su legado y su radio de influencia se había ampliado enormemente con los años gracias al desbordante éxito comercial de sus baladas y a la edición de puntuales ´Best Of´, el último de ellos también durante el año de la Expo.
Acoustica', their “unplugged” recorded/filmed in El Convento de Beato de Lisboa, has generated division of opinions among fans and critics, but keeps them on top with new energy while waiting for their long awaited and promised return to the hard sounds that brought them glory. We love them, and very much, let's see when they come to take a walk down their street in Leganés and delight us with one of their tremendous shows, because our country is one of the most faithful in their passion for the Scorpions, true metal idols of several generations.
´Acoustica´, su “unplugged” grabado/filmado en El Convento de Beato de Lisboa, ha generado división de opiniones entre fans y crítica, pero les mantiene en lo alto con savia nueva a la espera de su ansiado y prometido regreso a los sonidos duros que les dieron la gloria. Les queremos, y mucho, a ver cuándo se pasan a darse un paseíto por su calle en Leganés y nos deleitan con uno de sus tremendos shows, pues nuestro país es uno de los más fieles en su pasión por los Escorpiones, verdaderos ídolos metálicos de varias generaciones.
