#23 History Of Rock Music: OZZY OSBOURNE: CRAZY YES BUT NOT SILLY.
Few characters in rock history have been the source of so many absurd anecdotes and crazy anecdotes as the great Ozzy. Since his days in Black Sabbath, or rather, since his earliest childhood, our beloved Madman has displayed a really curious personality, between clownishness and the purest paranoia, which has forged him a really attractive and endearing charisma for the fans, who feel for him a huge respect and affection. From the beginning of his career he made it clear that he did not have a prodigious voice, but on stage (and off stage) there were few who could match him.

Desde sus días en Black Sabbath, o mejor dicho, desde su mas tierna infancia, nuestro querido Madman ha hecho gala de una personalidad realmente curiosa, entre la payasada y la mas pura paranoia, lo que le ha forjado un carisma realmente atractivo y entrañable para los fans, que sienten por el un enorme respeto y cariño. Desde el comienzo de su carrera dejo claro que no poseía una voz prodigiosa, pero sobre las tablas (y fuera de ellas) había pocos que pudieran equiparársele.
And so since the early 80's, when he began his solo career after his departure from Sabbath, he has had an absolute support from the metal fans, who have made him an icon and an admired and respected artist, while he was attacked by the press and by the most retrograde sectors of American society, who saw in him little less than the personification of the antichrist. His solo career is full of exemplary works, and it is partly the fault of the exceptional cast of musicians he has always been able to surround himself with, demonstrating an uncommon talent for discovering new guitar talents, apart from his own genius and madness.
Y asi desde comienzos de los 80, cuando comenzó su carrera en solitario tras su salida de Sabbath, ha contado con un respaldo absoluto por parte de los seguidores metalicos, que le han convertido en un icono y en un artista admirado y respetado, al mismo tiempo que era atacado por la prensa y por los sectores mas retrogrados de la sociedad americana, que veian en el poco menos que la personificación del anticristo. Su trayectoria solista esta plagada de obras ejemplares, y en parte la culpa es del excepcional elenco de músicos de los que siempre ha sabido rodearse, demostrando un olfato fuera de los común para descubrir nuevos talentos de la guitarra, aparte de su propia genialidad y locura.
“Blizzard Of Ozz” was an impeccable debut, accompanied by the inimitable Randy Rhoads, a classic album that gave a new life to Ozzy, already separated from the band that had launched him to fame and making his own name in the world of heavy metal that for years has been even above Sabbath themselves. Things could not have been better, because the 80s were to be the years of absolute apogee of heavy metal around the world, first with the English explosion of the NWOBHM and then with the explosion of hard rock in America.
“Blizzard Of Ozz” fue un debut impecable, acompañado del inimitable Randy Rhoads, un disco clásico donde los haya que dio una nueva vida a un Ozzy, ya apartado de la banda que le había lanzado a la fama y haciéndose un nombre propio en el mundo del heavy metal que durante años ha estado incluso por encima de los propios Sabbath. Las cosas no podían ir mejor, pues además los 80 iban a ser los años de apogeo absoluto del heavy metal en todo el mundo, primero con la explosión inglesa de la NWOBHM y luego con el estallido del hard rock en America.

Thus Ozzy did not take long to consolidate himself as a star of the decade, conquering and scandalizing in equal parts. “Diary Of A Madman”, second and last work with Randy Rhoads, would keep him in an enviable level of form. When unfortunately Randy passed to better life in an unfortunate accident that skewed one of the most promising careers in metal, Jake E. Lee arrived after the brief passage of Brad Gillis and showed why he was chosen to replace the talent of Rhoads. With him he would leave us another pair of excellent albums, “Bark At The Moon” and “The Ultimate Sin”, which also featured musicians such as drummers Tommy Aldridge and Randy Castillo, and the still present bassist Bob Daisley in the first of both plastics.
Asi Ozzy no tardo en consolidarse como una estrella de la década, conquistando y escandalizando a partes iguales. “Diary Of A Madman”, segundo y ultimo trabajo con Randy Rhoads, le mantendría en un nivel envidiable de forma. Cuando desgraciadamente Randy paso a mejor vida en un desafortunado accidente que sesgo una de las carreras mas prometedoras del metal, llego Jake E. Lee tras el breve paso de Brad Gillis y demostró el porque de su elección para sustituir el talento de Rhoads. Con el nos dejaría otro par de excelentes álbumes, “Bark At The Moon” y “The Ultimate Sin”, en los que también destacaban músicos como los baterías Tommy Aldridge y Randy Castillo, y el todavía presente bajo de Bob Daisley en el primero de ambos plásticos.
The 80's were in their equator, and heavy music raised passions among American teenagers. Ozzy was a true idol of the masses, filling packed stadiums, selling his records with ease, and arousing hatred and passion wherever he went. But the release of a live album as a tribute to the late Randy Rhoads did not sit too well to Jake E. Lee, who after the “Tribute To Randy Rhoads” left the band, but not without leaving the audience stunned at the first edition of Rock In Rio, in which both he and the rest of the band shone with their own light.
Los 80 estaban en su ecuador, y el heavy levantaba pasiones entre los adolescentes americanos. Ozzy era un autentico ídolo de masas, llenaba abarrotados estadios, vendia sus discos con suma facilidad, y despertaba odios y pasiones alla por donde pasaba. Pero la publicación de un disco en directo como homenaje al fallecido Randy Rhoads no sento demasiado bien a Jake E. Lee, que tras el “Tribute To Randy Rhoads” se largo de la banda, no sin dejar atónita a la audiencia de la primera edición de Rock In Rio, en la que tanto el como el resto de la banda brillo con luz propia.
Finding a new axe would have been an arduous task for anyone, but Ozzy was always on the lookout, and Zakk Wylde was the chosen one, reconfirming the best expectations, and giving once again the reason for Ozzy's exquisite guitar taste. “No Rest For The Wicked” was the harbinger of the excellent ‘No More Tears’ from '91, where Wylde proved to be a true guitar hero with spectacular riffs and phrasing, which fit perfectly with the Blizzard's compositional style. All the power and strength that the band had been exhibiting for a decade was captured in the live double, “Live & Loud”, a spectacular album, in which two other capital musicians would appear for the history of the group, the already mentioned Randy Castillo and bassist Mike Inez.
Encontrar un nuevo hacha habría sido una ardua tarea para cualquiera, pero Ozzy siempre andaba ojo avizor, y Zakk Wylde fue el elegido, volviendo a confirmar las mejores expectativas, y dando una vez mas la razón al exquisito gusto guitarrero de Ozzy. “No Rest For The Wicked” fue el presagio del excelente “No More Tears” del 91, donde Wylde demostró ser un autentico héroe de la guitarra con riffs y fraseos espectaculares, que encajaban perfectamente en el estilo compositivo del Blizzard. Todo el poder y la fuerza que la banda había venido exhibiendo durante una década se plasmo en el doble en directo, “Live & Loud”, un espectacular álbum, en el que aparecerían otros dos músicos capitales para la historia del grupo, el ya comentado Randy Castillo y el bajista Mike Inez.
After this album, rumors of the singer's retirement from the stage and musical activity began to be heard, because apart from the fact that his mental health was not the best possible (has it ever been?), his physical condition, affected by many years of alcohol excesses, was not the best to move around the stage either. You see, almost ten years later Ozzy is still rocking like the best. For “Ozzmosis”, his 95 album, he had the help of an old acquaintance, Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, the album marked a point of disagreement between Ozzy and Zakk Wylde, who would break their relationship soon after. Looking at it from today's perspective, it was something like an approach to the reunion of the legendary Birmingham band a few years later, a band that had been vastly surpassed in popularity by its original singer during all the years that Tony Iommi had continued to keep the band alive with a continuous coming and going of members in its ranks.
Tras este disco ya comenzaron a sonar los rumores de una retirada del cantante de los escenarios y la actividad musical, pues aparte de que su salud mental no era la mejor posible (¿es que alguna vez lo ha sido?), su estado físico, tocado por muchos años de excesos con el alcohol, tampoco era el idóneo para moverse por los escenarios. Ya veis, casi diez años mas tarde Ozzy sigue rockeando como el mejor. Para “Ozzmosis”, su álbum del 95, conto con la ayuda de un viejo conocido, el bajista de Sabbath, Geezer Butler, el disco marco un punto de desavenencias entre Ozzy y Zakk Wylde, que romperían su relación al poco tiempo. Mirándolo desde nuestra perspectiva actual, aquello fue algo asi como un acercamiento a la reunión del mitico grupo de Birmingham unos años mas tarde, un grupo que había sido superado estrepitosamente en popularidad por su cantante original durante todos los años en que Tony Iommi había seguido manteniendo viva a la banda con un continuo ir y venir de miembros en sus filas.
In combio Ozzy was still at the top, in fact, his sales surpassed those of Sabbath themselves. If in gold albums they beat him by one (12 against 11), the platinum and multi-platinum certification tipped the scales on Ozzy's side, with 10 albums exceeding one million copies sold (against 8 for Sabbath), and 8 of his works with more than two million copies sold (against 3 for Black Sabbath). So the reunion was a breath of fresh air for both. To Black Sabbath it gave the necessary push to recover past glories, and to Ozzy besides a great satisfaction, it supposed him a sufficient time of rest to reconcile with Wylde, his “pretty boy”, who would return to the bosom of a group that already with the spectacular rhythmic base of the last years (the most stable of his trajectory) composed by Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin, had burst Donington in 96.
En combio Ozzy seguía en lo mas alto, de hecho, sus ventas superan a las de los propios Sabbath. Si en discos de oro estos le ganan por uno (12 frente a 11), la certificación de platino y multi-platino decanta la balanza del lado de Ozzy, con 10 discos que superan el millón de copias vendidas (frente a los 8 de Sabbath), y 8 de sus obras con mas de dos millones de copias despachadas (frente a 3 de Black Sabbath). Asi que la reunión supuso un soplo de aire fresco para ambos. A Black Sabbath le dio el empujon necesario para volver a recuperar glorias pasadas, y a Ozzy además de una gran satisfacción, le supuso un tiempo de descanso suficiente para reconciliarse con Wylde, su “niño bonito”, que volveria al seno de un grupo que ya con la espectacular base rítmica de los últimos años (la mas estable de su trayectoria) compuesta por Robert Trujillo y Mike Bordin, había reventado Donington en el 96.
After launching a truly scandalous traveling festival, the Ozzfest, where many new bands have emerged, giving him even more popularity if possible, last 2001 brought us his new studio work, “Down To Earth” - again with Wylde in his ranks that currently has him on tour and has sold more than half a million copies in the U.S., where the Madman currently resides. Ozzy's stellar career is “in crescendo” in America thanks to this kind of “Big Brother” that has been set up in the Osbourne's house, a success of audience of Mtv, which has led the American President George Bush himself to request Ozzy's presence in the White House to meet one of the TV personalities of the year.

Meanwhile, Sabbath parked (though not inactive), and Ozzfest arriving on the legendary stage of the Donington circuit looking to relive the glory days of the Monsters Of Rock. That's our Ozzy.
Tras poner en marcha un festival itinerante de verdadero escándalo, el Ozzfest, donde han despuntado muchas nuevas bandas dándole aun mas popularidad si cabe, el pasado 2001 nos trajo su nueva obra de estudio, “Down To Earth” – otra vez con Wylde en sus filas que actualmente le tiene de gira y que lleva vendidas mas de medio millón de copias en EEUU, donde actualmente reside el Madman. La estela de Ozzy va “en crescendo” en America gracias a ese especie de “Gran Hermano” que han montado en casa de los Osbourne, todo un éxito de audiencia de la Mtv, que ha llevado al mismísimo presidente norteamericano George Bush a solicitar la presencia de Ozzy en la Casa Blanca para poder conocer a uno de los personajes televisivos del año.
Eso el que otrora fuera icono satanico y deplorable influencia juvenil que llegara a mear en el Alamo, uno de los mayores simbolos de la independencia en su país adoptivo. Mientras, los Sabbath aparcados (aunque no inactivos), y el Ozzfest arribando en el legendario escenario del circuito de Donington buscando revivir los días de gloria del Monsters Of Rock. Ese es nuestro Ozzy.
