#2 History Of Rock: LED ZEPPELIN - NEVER AGAIN?
To talk about Led Zeppelin is to talk about the greatest hard rock band of all times and a basic formation to understand where heavy metal comes from. They were not just another band, they were the ultimate combo. In an environment dominated by the hippie philosophy and the “Peace and Love” vibe, the great lead zeppelin was about to fall, just like on the cover of their magnificent first LP, over an era in which they would be true masters.
1969, nothing would ever be the same again in the world of rock. They were to become something enormously big, the most popular band on both sides of the Atlantic, an incredible ensemble whose creative magnitude seemed to have no limits. Robert Plant, strutting onstage with his long golden hair, squandering to the maximum his wonderful voice of unrepeatable treble and nuances, that made the women fall surrendered at his feet and chased like crazy the wavy curls of his luxuriant hair. Jimmy Page, exploring at the same time all kinds of vices and mystical experiences that inspired the magic that the electric guitar took in his hands, and of which he would be forever one of its greatest exponents. John Bonham, a huge thrashing, swimming in his alcoholic vortex, behaving like a beast both on and off the stage. And in the shadows, John Paul Jones, sculptor of striking bass lines, occasional keyboardist and counterpoint of serenity in the jams.
Hablar de Led Zeppelin es hacerlo de la banda de hard rock mas grande de todos los tiempos y de una formación básica para entender de donde viene el heavy metal. No eran un grupo mas, eran el combo definitivo. En una ambiente dominado por la filosofía hippie y el rollo de “Paz y Amor”, el gran zepelín de plomo estaba a punto de caer, al igual que en la portada de su magnifico primer Lp, sobre una era en la que serian verdaderos maestros.
1969, ya nada volveria a ser igual en el mundo del rock. Se iban a convertir en algo enormemente grande, en la banda mas popular a ambos lados del Atlantico, en un conjunto increíble cuya magnitud creativa parecía no tener limites. Robert Plant, pavoneándose en escena con su larga melena dorada, derrochando al máximo su maravillosa voz de agudos y matices irrepetibles, que hacían que las féminas cayeran rendidas a sus pies y persiguieran como locas los ondulados rizos de su frondosa cabellera. Jimmy Page, explorando al mismo tiempo todo tipo vicios y experiencias misticas que inspiraban la magia que la eléctrica cobraba en sus manos, y de la que seria por siempre uno de sus máximos exponentes. John Bonham, golpeaparches descomunal, nadando en su vorágine alcoholica, comportándose como una bestia tanto dentro como fuera del escenario. Y en la sombra, John Paul Jones, escultor de llamativas líneas de bajo, ocasional tecladista y contrapunto de serenidad en las jams.
Can there be any group more attractive than that legendary metal dinosaur? Well, if we stick to sales figures, no other rock band has captivated the public as much as the Zeppelins. No more and no less than 83 million records have been shipped from an impeccable collection made up of albums that transcend beyond any perceptible beauty and hypnotize and transform the world with their masterful perfection every time one of their notes is played. From their impressive debut, a milestone in the annals of rock (8 million copies sold), through the rocking force of their second album (12 million), the folk inclination of “III” (6 million), or the divine touch of “IV” (22 million copies), everything sounds like an unreal mirage, thanks to the incomparable talent of these four rock gods.
“Stairway To Heaven” continues to this day to be played incessantly on radio stations around the world, a song hardly understandable at earthly levels, which has always been their best known song in an extensive repertoire of temporary cuts. In 1975 would see the light his next masterpiece, a “Physical Graphitti” of which 15 million dollars of the time had been collected in pre-orders, and that would stand for some as his zenith, with another number 15 in his credentials, this time that of millions of copies distributed in homes of the Planet Earth. None of their subsequent albums (including “The Song Remains The Same”, their only live album in their lifetime as a group) sold under a million copies, and they even surpassed that figure by far with some of their later plastics.
¿Puede existir algún grupo mas atractivo que aquel legendario dinosaurio metálico? Pues si nos ceñimos a las cifras de ventas, ninguna otra formación de rock ha cautivado tanto al publico como los Zeppelin. Nada mas y nada menos que 83 millones de discos llevan despachados de una colección impecable conformada por redondos que trascienden mas allá de cualquier belleza perceptible e hipnotizan y transforman el mundo con su magistral perfección cada vez que suena una de sus notas. Desde su impactante debut, todo un hito en los anales del rock (8 millones de copias vendidas), pasando por la fuerza rockera de su segundo álbum (12 millones), la inclinación folk de “III” (6 millones), o el toque divino de “IV” (22 millones de copias), todo suena a espejismo irreal, gracias al talento incomparable de estos cuatro dioses del rock.
“Stairway To Heaven” continua hoy en día sonando sin cesar en las emisoras de radio de todo el mundo, una canción difícilmente comprensible a niveles terrenales, que ha sido siempre su tema mas conocido dentro de un repertorio extenso de cortes a temporales. En 1975 vería la luz su siguiente obra maestra, un “Physical Graphitti” del que se habían recaudado 15 millones de dólares de la época en pedidos anticipados, y que se erigiría para algunos como su cenit, con otro numero 15 en sus credenciales, esta vez el de millones de copias distribuidas en hogares del Planeta Tierra. Ninguno de sus álbumes posteriores (incluyendo “The Song Remains The Same”, su único disco directo en vida como grupo) bajo del millón de copias vendidas, e incluso superaron la cifra con creces con algunos de sus últimos plásticos.
After Bonham's unfortunate death in 1980, which meant the end of the legendary line-up, the surviving members continued, with certain ups and downs, in the world of music, giving us from time to time new works, collaborations and even hints of a resurrection of the mythical zeppelin. Page and Plant would meet again in 1984, when they joined Jeff Beck and Nile Rodgers under the name of Honeydrippes. With this name they would record an EP, “Volume One”, that worked quite well in the USA, even obtaining certain repercussion the single “Sea Of Love”. A year later in the frame of the Live Aid, Page and Plant would meet with John Paul Jones on the stage, this so endearing image seemed for moments to propitiate a rapprochement between the parts for a reunion of the band with Tony Thompson in the battery, but unfortunately an accident of this last one paralyzed the project.
The year 88 also had a great zeppelin load. Both Plant and Page would collaborate respectively appearing in the solo albums of each one of them, “Outrider” in the case of Mr.Page, where Plant appeared as guest vocalist, and “Now And Zen” on the part of the blond singer. That same year Led Zeppelin would once again be on stage, this time with Jason Bonham, son of the late John, on drums for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of his company, Atlantic Records. The visible heads of the historical combo, that is to say, Page and Plant, would share the stage two years later in Knebworth, which would be the prolegomero for their definitive union under the appellation of their famous surnames. MTV itself decided to include Led Zeppelin among the groups to perform the famous “unplugged” for its channel, but the absence or intentional forgetfulness of John Paul Jones made them guitarist and voice in the company of an army of musicians who performed that concert of acoustic airs that was collected in their first shared work after a good handful of years.
Tras la desgraciada muerte de Bonham en 1980, que supuso el final de la legendaria formación, los miembros supervivientes siguieron adelante, con ciertos altibajos, en el mundo de la música, brindándonos de vez en cuando nuevas obras, colaboraciones e incluso esbozando atisbos de resurrección del mitico zepelín. Page y Plant se volverían a ver las caras en 1984, cuando se unieron a Jeff Beck y Nile Rodgers bajo el nombre de Honeydrippes. Con este apelativo grabarian un EP, “Volume One”, que funciono bastante bien en USA, obtuviendo incluso cierta repercusión el single “Sea Of Love”. Un año mas tarde en el marco del Live Aid, Page y Plant se reunirían con John Paul Jones sobre el escenario, esta imagen tan entrañable pareció por momentos propiciar un acercamiento entre las partes para una reunión de la banda con Tony Thompson en la batería, pero por desgracia un accidente de este ultimo paralizo el proyecto.

Ese mismo año se daría de nuevo la ocasión de ver a Led Zeppelin sobre las tablas, esta vez con Jason Bonham, hijo del fallecido John, en la batería para la celebración de los 40 años de su compañía, Atlantic Records. Las cabezas visibles del histórico combo, es decir, Page y Plant, compartirían escenario dos años mas tarde en Knebworth, lo que seria el prolegomero para su definitiva unión bajo el apelativo de sus famosos apellidos. It would be “No Quarter”, a work of Arabic influence and with the weight of the Zeppelin classics in the repertoire. The same year that they toured the USA, Europe, Japan and Australia, Led Zeppelin would enter the prestigious Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame, which helped to keep their flame alive with more intensity than ever. The next and last album of the Page/Plant team would not arrive until 1998, called “Walking Into Clarksdale”, which would be followed by an American tour and a Grammy for the best hard rock interpretation thanks to their song “Most High”.
Page and Plant were at the top again, although their majesties would choose again to follow divergent paths. The tribute concert at the mythical Sun Records label, the same one that made Elvis Presley known, would bring them together again in 2001, and as always when they see each other's faces a new opportunity arose to do something together, which is what they seem to be preparing at the moment, another album as an artistic duo. Fortunately, Zeppelin's legacy continues to be transmitted from generation to generation, and without a doubt they deserve a place among the most relevant artists of the 20th century, together with Picasso or Lorca, because theirs is art in its purest form. Art misunderstood by those who disown the mane and guitar distortion and are seen in many cultural events, but the relatively recent compilation releases or sound archives relegated to oblivion (the successful “Remasters” or the “BBC Sessions”) disappear from the shelves of the stores and keep alive the flagrant flame of a band that will continue flying over our heads and penetrating our ears for ever and ever.
Seria “No Quarter”, un trabajo de influencia arábiga y con el peso de los clásicos zeppelianos en el repertorio. El mismo año que realizan el tour de presentación del susodicho disco por EEUU, Europa, Japon y Australia, Led Zeppelin ingresarían en el prestigioso Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame, lo que ayuda a mantener viva su llama con mas intensidad que nunca. Hasta el 98 no llegara su siguiente y ultima hasta la fecha entrega discográfica del equipo Page/Plant, llamada “Walking Into Clarksdale”, a la que seguiría un tour americano y un Grammy por la mejor interpretación de hard rock gracias a su tema “Most High”.
Page y Plant volvían a estar en la cima, aunque sus majestades optarían de nuevo por seguir caminos divergentes. El concierto tributo al mitico sello Sun Records, el mismo que dio a conocer a Elvis Presley, volveria a juntarles en el 2001, y como siempre que se ven las caras surgió una nueva oportunidad de realizar algo juntos, que es lo que parece ser que preparan en estos momentos, otro álbum como duo artístico. Por suerte el legado de Zeppelin continua transmitiéndose de generación en generación, y sin duda merecerían un lugar entre los artistas mas relevantes del s.XX junto a los mismísimos Picasso o Lorca, pues lo suyo es arte en estado puro. Arte incomprendido por los que reniegan de las melenas y la distorsion guitarrera y se dejan ver en multitud de actos culturales, pero los relativamente recientes lanzamientos recopilatorios o de archivos sonoros relegados al olvido (los exitosos “Remasters” o las “BBC Sessions”) desaparecen de las esanterias de las tiendas y mantienen viva la flagrante llama de una banda que seguirá sobrevolando nuestras cabezas y penetrando en nuestros oídos por los siglos de los siglos.
