#16 History Of Rock Music: NIN (Nine Inch Nails): THE TORMENTED GENIUS.
Within the musical explosion of the 90's, where we have been able to enjoy a good number of new proposals that have revitalized the rock scene, the figure of Trent Reznor is one of the key references since he was always ahead. A mastermind open to evolution, to experimentation, capable of imagining complex sounds, unthinkable atmospheres, unhinged and torturing passages... A breadth of vision that has opened many doors within metal. Without taking away merits to Al Jourgensen and his Ministry, Reznor is the great messiah of industrial metal, a style that although it is true that it has a background and a considerable load of participation of electronic sounds, it is still a proposal that delves a step further in the typical corrosion of hard rock.
Dentro de la explosión musical de los 90, en donde hemos podido disfrutar de un buen numero de nuevas propuestas que han revitalizado el panorama rockero, la figura de Trent Reznor es una de las referencias clave dado que siempre fue por delante. Una mente maestra abierta a la evolución, a la experimentación, capaz de imaginar complejos sonidos, atmosferas impensables, pasajes desquiciados y torturadores… Una amplitud de miras que ha abierto muchas puertas dentro del metal. Sin quitar meritos a Al Jourgensen y sus Ministry, Reznor es el gran mesias del metal industrial, un estilo que si bien es cierto que tienen un transfondo y una considerable carga de participación de sonidos electrónicos, no deja de ser una propuesta que ahonda un paso mas en la corrosión típica del rock duro.
That is something that Reznor has always understood very well and, more importantly, he has been able to transmit it wonderfully in a breathtaking discography. He and his “nine-inch nails”, which in the end is just a name that hides a personality not too fond of fame, have signed essential albums for the future of metal, works generated in another galaxy that take shape and are transmuted in the misunderstood brain of Reznor, worthy of being investigated by the very Mulder and Scully. But the most curious thing is that being a totally “marginal” artist, obscure and not at all prone to success, he has managed to conquer a public that has been hypnotized by his songs, his thundering and sampled guitars, and his very intelligent texts, worthy of a sociological study.
Eso es algo que Reznor siempre ha comprendido muy bien y, además, lo mas importante, ha sabido transmitirlo de maravilla en una discografía que quita la respiración. El y sus “uñas de nueve pulgadas”, que en definitiva no deja de ser un nombre tras el que esconder una personalidad no demasiado afin a la fama, han firmado discos imprescindibles para el devenir del metal, obras engendradas en otra galaxia que toman cuerpo y se trasmutan en el incomprendido cerebro de Reznor, digno de ser investigado por los mismísimos Mulder y Scully. Pero lo mas curioso es que siendo un artista totalmente “marginal”, oscuro y nada propenso al éxito, ha logrado conquistar a un publico que ha quedado hipnotizado con sus canciones, sus guitarras rezonantes y sampleadas, y sus inteligentísimos textos, merecedores de un estudio sociológico.
In order to move away even more from everyday life and from any comparison with other artists, their albums are known as “halos”, and in a certain way, the denomination is logical, since these works transcend beyond corporeality and take on an almost unreal entity, they are something like “sonorous mirages”. “Pretty Hate Machine” was the first concrete step of NIN towards their particular musical adventure. We were in the last year of the 80's, and the public was not yet ready for this sonorous monstrosity, except in closed underground circles. But the EP “Broken”, already in the magical decade of the 90's, was the starting signal for the most brilliant and unlimited creativity of Reznor, who made a name for himself in the hard scene with great songs like “Wish” or “Happiness In Slaverly”, ingenious compositions full of anguish and pain, but also of hope and energy.
Para apartarse aun mas de la cotidianidad y de cualquier comparación con otros artistas, sus discos son conocidos con el nombre de “halos”, y en cierta manera, es lógica la denominación, pues esas obras trascienden mas alla de la corporeidad y cobran una entidad casi irreal, son algo asi como “espejismos sonoros”. “Pretty Hate Machine” fue el primer paso concreto de NIN hacia su particular aventura musical. Estábamos en el ultimo año de los 80, y el publico todavía no estaba preparado para ese engendro sonoro, salvo en cerrados círculos underground. Pero el EP “Broken”, ya en la mágica década de los 90, fue el pistoletazo de salida para la creatividad mas genial e ilimitada de Reznor, que se hizo con un nombre en la escena dura con temazos como “Wish” o “Hapiness In Slaverly”, composiciones ingeniosas llenas de angustia y dolor, pero también de esperanza y energía.
The custom of releasing remix albums of the official albums of the “group” would begin, and so “Fixed” saw the light, followed by a new thrilling advance called “March Of The Pigs”, all of them albums that began to expand the conquest zones of Nine Inch Nails in the market, increasingly prone to experimentation and new sound trends. But the best was yet to come. In 1994 the earthly foundations would tremble under our feet with the release of “The Downward Spiral”, a lethal pill born from the tormented soul of Reznor, a timeless album that has not yet been appreciated in its full dimension, as it undoubtedly represents the soundtrack of centuries to come and galaxies far away.
Comenzaría la costumbre de publicar los consiguientes álbumes de remezclas de los discos oficiales del “grupo”, y asi vio luz “Fixed”, seguido de una nueva avanzadilla estremecedora llamada “March Of The Pigs”, discos todos ellos que empezaban a ampliar las zonas de conquista de Nine Inch Nails en el mercado, cada vez mas proclive a las experimentaciones y nuevas tendencias sonoras. Pero lo mejor estaba por llegar. En 1994 los cimientos terrestres iban a temblar bajo nuestros pies con la publicación de “The Downward Spiral”, una píldora letal nacida de la atormentada alma de Reznor, un disco atemporal que todavía no ha sabido ser apreciado en toda su dimensión, pues sin duda representa la banda sonora de siglos venideros y galaxias lejanas.
The album, in spite of everything, was an absolute success in sales, something incredible for a plastic of zero commercial potential when adding to it a few dreadful and at the same time offensive lyrics, but the genius captured in its grooves was capable of attracting anyone with a minimum sensibility. A work that has been vindicated by hundreds of musicians, who still can't explain how someone was able to engineer in his mind a work of such complexity. The live presentation of the album had its point of reference in the Woodstock festival of that same year, where NIN appeared totally covered in mud to offer an indescribable discharge, full of rage, of sincerity, in which Reznor opened his soul and broke his throat to write a new page in the history of rock.
El álbum pese a todo fue un éxito absoluto en ventas, algo increíble para un plástico de potencial comercial cero al añadirle unas letras apesumbradas y al mismo tiempo ofensivas, pero es que la genialidad plasmada en sus surcos era capaz de atraer a cualquiera con una minima sensibilidad. Un trabajo que ha sido reivindicado por cientos de músicos, que todavía no se explican como alguien pudo maquinar en su mente una obra de esa complejidad. La presentación en vivo del álbum tuvo su punto de referencia en el festival de Woodstock de ese mismo año, donde NIN aparecieron totalmente cubiertos de barro para ofrecer una descarga indescriptiblemente, llena de rabia, de sinceridad, en la que Reznor abrió su alma y quebró su garganta para escribir una nueva pagina en la historia del rock.

From there, sales skyrocketed, turning the album, and to a lesser extent, its obligatory remixes (“Further Down The Spiral”) into the center of the limitless creative “spiral” of the past decade. But as we have already mentioned, Reznor is not a man of fame. Anyone else would have gladly appeared on the covers of music magazines around the world, giving interviews and strutting his stuff as he rubbed shoulders with the “creme de la creme” of the industry, but not Reznor. He locked himself away in his grim world, in his peculiar inner existence, which was once again punctuated by the glimpses of absolute fame when it became known that he was behind the discovery of another of the biggest stars of recent years, Marilyn Manson.
A partir de ahí, las ventas se dispararon, convirtiendo al disco, y en menor medida, a sus obligadas remezclas (“Further Down The Spiral”) en el centro de la “espiral” creativa sin limites de la pasada década. Pero como ya hemos comentado, Reznor no es hombre de fama. Cualquier otro habría aparecido gustoso en las portadas de las revistas musicales de todo el mundo, concediendo entrevistas y pavoneándose al codearse con la “creme de la creme” de la industria, pero Reznor no. Se encerro en su lúgubre mundo, en su peculiar existencia interna, que se vio una vez mas salpicada por los atisbos de la fama absoluta cuando se supo que el estaba detrás del descubrimiento de otra de las grandes estrellas de los últimos años, Marilyn Manson.
Master and pupil would soon have their disagreements, as Manson was willing to turn the world upside down and take the limelight that Reznor was repelled by. We had to wait five agonizing years to see NIN reborn with a new studio work, “The Fragile”, a double album heir to the magic of its predecessor, but distant from its impact, although after the arduous wait of the fans and curious, it was logical that it also raised the natural expectation that this band entails, and was again a success along with its most recent release, a live album/video/dvd witness of a tour that we had the honor of seeing born in Barcelona itself.
Maestro y alumno no tardarían en tener sus desavenencias, pues Manson estaba dispuesto a poner el mundo patas arriba y llevarse un protagonismo que a Reznor le repelía. Hubo que esperar cinco angustiosos años para ver renacer a NIN con nueva obra de estudio, “The Fragile”, un doble álbum heredero de la magia de su predecesor, pero distante de su impacto, aunque tras la ardua espera de los fans y curiosos, era lógico que también levantara la expectación natural que esta banda conlleva, y volviera a ser un éxito junto con su mas reciente publicación, un álbum/video/dvd en directo testigo de una gira que tuvimos el honor de ver nacer en la mismísima Barcelona.
“All That Could Have Been” is the title of a work called to climb the charts in a modest and unpretentious way, as everything good Trent bills. “All That Could Have Been...”. Interesting message. Without Reznor and his NIN the existence and the musical life of the last years could have been many things, but without a doubt it would not have reached the degree of absolute brilliance that it has without the presence of this authentic leader of modernity.
“All That Could Have Been” es el titulo de un trabajo llamado a escalar las listas de manera modesta y sin pretensiones, como todo lo que factura el bueno de Trent. “Todo lo que podría haber sido…”. Interesante mensaje. Sin Reznor y sus NIN la existencia y la vida musical de los últimos años podría haber sido muchas cosas, pero sin duda no habría alcanzado el grado de brillantez absoluta que ostenta sin la presencia de este autentico lider de la modernidad.
