#15 History Of Rock Music: PEARL JAM: STILL ALIVE.
At the same time that Nirvana opened an important hole in the rock underground and revolutionized the industry, Pearl Jam became, along with Cobain's band, the maximum standards of what was called grunge. More importantly, Pearl Jam is one of the few bands still alive from that spectacular generation. It seems incredible that in barely a decade they have achieved such a level of popularity, having already sold 24 million copies of a somewhat uneven discography.
A la par que Nirvana abrieron un agujero importante en el rock underground y revolucionaron la industria, Pearl Jam se convirtieron junto a la banda de Cobain en los máximos estandartes de aquello que se llamo grunge. Lo que es mas importante, la Mermelada de Perlas es de los pocos grupos que siguen con vida de aquella espectacular generación. Parece increíble que en apenas una década hayan conseguido tal nivel de popularidad, ya lleven despachadas 24 millones de copias de una discografía algo desigual.
In 1992 Pearl Jam was an enormously exciting band, and although Eddie Vedder cultivated the best of the grunge philosophy, that is, a pessimistic and depressive attitude towards life, the truth is that he was a wild frontman, and theirs was a hard rock combo with all the letters. The origins of the band can be found in Mother Love Bone, another Seattle band that passed away when the sensational and forgotten Andy Wood left a void in this world leaving with his glamour and talent due to an overdose. It was then when Mike McCready, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament joined Soundgarden members Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron and formed a short-lived band, Temple of the Dog, as a tribute to Wood, which left us an excellent album where we could already hear Vedder's voice in the song “Hunger Strike”. So when that ended, and Soundgarden went their way, Vedder joined the guys and formed Pearl Jam.
En 1992 Pearl Jam era un grupo enormemente excitante, y pese a que Eddie Vedder cultivara lo mejor de la filosofía grunge, es decir, actitud pesimista y depresiva ante la vida, lo cierto es que era un frontman salvaje, y el suyo un combo de hard rock con todas las letras. Los orígenes de la banda se encuentran en Mother Love Bone, otro grupo de Seattle que paso a mejor vida cuando el sensacional y olvidado Andy Wood dejo en este mundo un vacio marchandose con su glamour y su talento por culpa de una sobredosis. Fue entonces cuando Mike McCready, Stone Gossard y Jeff Ament se unieron a los miembros de Soundgarden, Chris Cornell y Matt Cameron y formaron un efímero grupo, Temple of the Dog, como homenaje a Wood, que nos dejo un excelente álbum en donde ya pudimos escuchar la voz de Vedder en el tema “Hunger Strike”. Asi que cuando aquello termino, y Soundgarden siguieron su camino, Vedder se unió a los chicos y formaron Pearl Jam.
What they did not expect was that the work they were developing, a true peak of 90's rock with essential songs like “Alive”, “Even Flow” or “Jeremy”, was going to turn them into international stars. “Ten”, their debut, has already sold 11 million copies in the USA, the commercial peak of a group that still had a lot to give. The album was followed by a spectacular tour, where Pearl Jam unloaded every night their repertoire with energy and delivery, which increased their fame and propitiated that their next album, “Vs”, went straight to number 1 and that a million copies were shipped in their country in the week of release, achieving a record that would take years to beat.
Lo que no se esperaban era que la obra que estaban gestando, una verdadera cima del rock de los 90 con imprescindibles temas de la categoría de “Alive”, “Even Flow” o “Jeremy”, iba a convertirles en estrellas internacionales. “Ten”, su debut, ya lleva vendidas 11 millones de copias USA, la cumbre comercial de un grupo que todavía tenia mucho que dar de si. Al álbum le siguió una espectacular gira, donde Pearl Jam descargaban cada noche su repertorio con energía y entrega, lo que aumento su fama y propicio que su siguiente disco, “Vs”, entrara directo al numero 1 y que un millón de copias fueran despachadas en su país en la semana de salida, consiguiendo un record que tardaría en batirse años.
Undoubtedly, another excellent album, like “Vitalogy”, their last great best seller, with 5 million copies sold in the USA, the album that made them win their only Grammy (thanks to the song “Spin The Black Circle”) and for some the last usable album of Pearl Jam. From then on, their popularity dropped and the level of the compositions decreased at the same time, but in spite of everything they continued being one of the most popular rock combos of the planet, their works continued selling well and the tickets for some concerts already exempt of the past vitality were sold out wherever they went.
Sin duda, otro excelente álbum, como “Vitalogy”, su ultimo gran superventas, con 5 millones de copias vendidas USA, el disco que les hizo ganar su único Grammy (gracias al tema “Spin The Black Circle”) y para algunos el ultimo álbum aprovechable de Pearl Jam. A partir de ahí su popularidad bajo y el nivel de las composiciones descendió a la par, pero pese a todo continuaron siendo uno de los combos de rock mas populares del planeta, sus trabajos siguieron vendiendo bien y las entradas para unos conciertos ya exentos de la vitalidad pasada se agotaban alla por donde pasaban.
A couple of albums later, with “Yield” they managed to climb to the second position on the Billboard, and once again they would enjoy recognition thanks to a hit single called “Last Kiss”. “Binatural”, their last studio album, showed us a band somewhat lacking in ideas, too tired, and sales reflected it, reaching only half a million records in their native country. But people still trust them, they supported them after the tragedy of the Danish festival Roskilde, where some fans died during their show by crushing, and they always appreciate the affection of their people. So they didn't mind to satisfy them with a risky move that consisted in the publication of each of the concerts of their last tour, so that each of the attendees could take the corresponding one home.
Un par de discos mas tarde, con “Yield” lograrían encaramarse a la segunda posición del Billboard, y otra vez gozarían de reconocimiento gracias a un exitoso single llamado “Last Kiss”. “Binatural”, su ultimo disco en estudio, nos mostro a una banda algo falta de ideas, demasiado cansina, y las ventas lo reflejaron, llegando tan solo al medio millón de discos en su país natal. Pero la gente sigue confiando en ellos, les apoyo tras la tragedia del festival danes Roskilde, donde algunos fans murieron durante su show por aplastamiento, y ellos siempre agradecen el cariño de su gente. Asi que no les importo satisfacerles con una arriesgada jugada que consistió en la publicación de cada uno de los conciertos de su ultima gira, para que cada unon de los asistentes a los mismos pudiera llevarse el correspondiente a casa.
It's hard for Pearl Jam to surprise the world again as they did a decade ago, mostly because the spontaneity of those years no longer exists, but they are an established band and don't need to thank anyone for getting to where they have, because they've made it on their own.
Es difícil que Pearl Jam vuelvan a sorprender al mundo como hicieron hace ya una década, mas que nada porque la espontaneidad de esos años ya no existe, pero son una banda consolidada y no necesitan agradecer a nadie el llegar hasta donde han llegado, porque se lo han logrado ellos sólitos.
Muy buena reseña (como sueles hacer) de este importante grupo del rock de los 90.
