Putting in gate posts on the back side of the property
When I moved to this new property, some hunters were using the back woods for deer, turkey and other wild game hunting. But I told them they needed to stop as ownership changed and we would be hunting it now. Well it would seem some other hunters did not get the memo and we have found signs of horses walking down my back roads.
In this remote area it would go unnoticed besides the prints their horses leave behind. And we have also found shell casings out there that are not ours. So our solution to this is to put up a gate we keep locked to keep unwanted poachers or people in general wandering off our land. When I bought this property our goal was to have our own place to hunt with so many acres. And having uninvited folk was not something we wanted.
Usually putting up a gate sends a message to keep out, but if they persist we may need more signage and or other deterrents.
It starts with loading up the truck, we need lots of water to make mix with the concrete to make it set. I use a 55 gallon barrel with a rain water spigot on the bottom.

Once all loaded up, we convoy over to the back road. We must use public roads to get to the back side of my property, but we hope to complete our forest road soon enough so that is no longer needed.
I drive the pickup truck with the 6x6 posts, level, water, concrete bags, wheel barrow and shovel. My foreman drives the skid steer with the auger bit on the front.
Once we arrive at the edge of my property, we setup so we can start drilling and making concrete to set posts. Bringing everything with us we are ready to start work.
We mix the concrete in the wheel barrow with a shovel and then pour it in the holes drilled by the skid steer.
Going as deep as we can, the posts are around 6 or 7 feet tall. And about half goes into the hole. I have hardware we will mount on the posts after the concrete sets.
Seeing it from up on the truck we can view all the concrete we poured into the hole.
Now we need to let it set for a week or so before hanging the gate, I bought a fourteen foot ranch gate. Its light duty, as its not stopping bulls from hitting it. But enough to denture people from driving back there or going on horses.
Leaving the back side of the property, I follow my foreman back. Slow goes it with the skid steer. It can only go a few MPH, so I drive behind with my blinkers on. Though the road I live off is very quiet and we did not even see any traffic during our trek to the back of the property.
Almost home, it did really well. Our first time taking the skid steer out on the road, laws for farmers allow us to drive farm equipment on public roads to reach our properties.
We get back to the farm and put everything away, and then just hang out and smoke/vape for a bit in the workshop and wind down. The gate can be seen in the above picture, it has the orange blaze tied around it.
I go back home and enjoy laying on my comfy couch, any day with concrete is usually a hard day of work. We will return to hang up the gate once the concrete sets for awhile. And then hopefully this will keep people out that do not belong there. Also offers security for when the forest road is complete, as we can gate off the back access to the farm.
you looks a lot like "eric" (anomodsoul). :)
will there going to be some special message for the poachers on the gate?
Hah oh yeah? Maybe I am his doppelganger.
Spraying purple spray paint on trees has been our way of telling hunters to stay away. For those who took the mandatory hunters safety course (required for many in the US to hunt) they learned what purple spray paint means.
It means stay out: https://law.lis.virginia.gov/admincode/title4/agency15/chapter20/section230/
that is an interesting way to let people know., coloring is good way, atleast better than putting up sign board....as it may be brought down...we have no such hunting ground here....
Yeah I like it, hopefully it catches on to other parts of the world. In the US there is lots of hunting so they needed a way to make people aware.
Good to see you already know about the purple paint. I was going to drop a comment about using it.
Armed trespassers are always the worst thing to have to deal with.
I once applied purple paint to the entire border of a property (following the guidelines for it) and had some 'local-yocal' show up not that long afterwards raging at me for doing it... because they could no longer trespass and freely hunt the place!

That's a big job... At least the soil didn't look too rocky! I've put in a lot of posts in my day, mostly when I was younger. Wouldn't want to do it now! Soon you'll have a gate to keep the trespassers out!
Yeah concrete jobs always feel like big jobs.. those 85 pound bags are no fun.. lol
We have lots of rocks, but luckily where we drilled there were none. But I think my auger can handle some, but probably not a lot.
thanks man I hope so.
Are there any dangerous animals ? or its all safe ? You have quite the set up to be able to accomplish any big task.
Yes we have dangerous animals out in this forest. I have spotted coyotes weighing up to 80 pounds here and numerous black bear sightings. So we always bring a gun with us out in the woods.
Sure do, its nice having these machines.
It seems as if there is a lot to hunt there and they wouldn't just give up it that easily.
Yeah! Putting up a gate sounds like something that will make them stay off but you know, some hunters won't listen to the get message, they would still want to trespass.
Hah sure is! We looked at half a dozen houses in Virginia and this one had the most wild life.. So indeed it does.
Hopefully it will help, we shall see what happens next once the gate is up.
How are you dear friend @solominer good morning
What a great job they are doing on your property, I hope you can finish the internal path to reach the end of your property
What a shame that poachers are entering your property, luckily with this entrance door it will make it clear that it is private property.
You may need to place a sign announcing that the property is monitored remotely by motion sensors, in these cases it is usually useful
Have a great day
Thanks, hopefully we will complete it this winter.
Ah yeah we may put up signs, but we will see if a gate and the purple spray paint works good enough.
You too
Well, I guess now that you put the gate up you'll know for sure if people are going back there knowing they shouldn't be. Hopefully it will do the trick!
I keep thinking I'd like to buy a property like this but honestly I don't know if I could manage the upkeep. It seems like you hire a lot of people to get stuff done which would be another layer of complication for me. I can barely manage myself, let alone employees. haha!
Yeah hopefully this will do the trick.
Well matters what you want to do with the land, everything I have done is pretty much optional when it comes to sustainability. But yeah handling this many acres with just myself and my foreman is quite the task. We just do as much as we can week to week and everything is okay.
I hire out help for more technical work, like building my workshop or setting up the wood furnace. But when it comes to more laberous tasks me and foreman tend to do them together.
Yeah. Feels good to relax after some good work :)
Sure does bud :-)
Man, your property is a full time job. You guys have been doing a lot there.
It sure is, and soon we will have farm animals.. so its about to get more busy next year.
Hell ya man. We are talking about getting a few chickens. When we have more space I would like to get a few different types of animals.
Have you tried hanging a game camera to see who is coming onto your property?
Yes, I had four of them and a bear took out three of them. So I have yet to put out more.
I need to put them up high or put them in a steel box I am afraid.
That is crazy, I would have never thought of bears messing with them.
They must learn to respect private property. I hope this fence will keep them out. On the other hand, it might also prevent more animals from entering the property. But I think there's already enough on your property to hunt.
Yeah they need to, I dont think the gate will stop any animals. They can walk into the woods and around it if they want.
We indeed do have a lot to hunt here.
A lot of work bro. Well done.
i was lucky enough to buy a property which was already fenced. Must have saved me a small fortune, possibly 1/3 rd the price i paid for the 2.9 decare property.
If i leave the gate open (which i don't anymore) sometimes cows would wander in and trample the veggie beds.
