Potted herbs - July update

avatar
(Edited)

The basil plants have really put on some growth now, it has been a few months in their pots and I think they are well established now. In the heat they have started bolting, but we cut off the flowers and use them for cooking.

As the leaves get bigger we also use those on pizzas and in pesto we make. It is so great to be able to walk outside and pick it fresh. Its the best that way, just minutes from picking being used in cooking.

We also have some yarrow, cone flower and either a rosemary or lavender plant together in one pot.

Thyme is being grown as well and is showing lots of leaves coming up. We will use that in cooking as well soon.

I really like the smell of them. Something special about the smell of thyme.

Rosemary is the plant I think this is. The leaves have a slightly different structure from the lavender, that is the best way I can tell.

But mostly basil, and may kinds of it. We use it all together. Just go outside with a bucket and some scissors and collect a bunch.

One of our favorites it the lemon basil, it also happens to be one of the largest.

It got so big I had to stake it using a wooden skewer.

The purple and red basils are growing but not anywhere as fast as the lemon and other varieties.

Seems they are turning back to green.

I am unsure of which this type is.. I think sweet basil.

We must have started seeds for around 5 kinds, but their labels got lost at some point in planting.

Savory is being grown in these pots as well and is bolting.

We can see the thyme, savory and basil further down. Along with a little rosemary plant.

One of the thyme plants is much bigger than the other.

For some of the basils they just keep bolting, we have tried to trim off the buds but no new leaves come back. Though for others it seems fine to cut back the flowers to promote more leaf growth. I guess that does not work for every herb.

The savory plants are doing well, they share a pot with another yarrow plant.

It has tiny little flowers that remind me of rosemary buds. It is hard to say if they have a smell since the herbs have their own scent to them.

I wonder if they drop seeds will they come back next year. I think some will.

They all look very happy now, adjusted to their pots and getting lots of sunlight outdoors.

Italian basil is doing well too. We can see the difference between the two.. The one on the right is the sweet basil.

The herbs and cactus live together, and all seem quite happy. Maybe one day those cactus will give me something to eat as well.

I need to stake up this basil plant.. its growing a little funny.. lol

Every few days we go outside and see these quick forming plants have put on lots of leaves and take some trimmings from each. Hopefully we can do this all throughout the summer and into the fall before the freezes begin.

It is pretty cool how far these little plants have come along. Looking back at my previous posts we can see the growth from their seed stage all the way up to now.

All your plants are growing beautifully, some of them I'm very familiar with. Nice to see all these healthy plants except this basil plant, I think it is affected by some insect maybe?

It would seem I cut it back too far, as it did that once I trimmed it. Luckily all the others seem quite happy.

No signs of insects that I have seen, so hard to say what caused it.

Your plants are very nice and fresh, I really like the plants, I am very interested in your plants, I hope I meet again with your post, I really like it.

I guess that does not work for every herb.

I thought it was effective too. Since most of them do the cutting to produce more leaves.😊 You proved that it's not always effective.

Those are looking really nice. I tried to grow some cilantro inside our house at one point, but like most things that I tried to grow it didn't turn out too well. I think I just don't have the time or patience to put into stuff like that. Either that or I go to extremes with the watering. Either too much or too little.

Ah thanks.. well hopefully you can have better luck with flowers or something like that.. when in the ground they need very little care and usually the rains is enough for wild flower seeds.

It's fine. I am gone so much in the summer that it isn't a huge deal anyway. Plus we have some great farmers markets nearby, so I can always get stuff from there.

It's incredible to see the growth of your thyme and basil plants, this is great for flavoring your meals; I hope the purple basil soon begins to grow like the others
Great work dear friend @solominer the place you chose for them is giving good results

It is quite amazing. Me too, seems our green basil plants are doing better than the purple ones we started for some reason.

Thank you

Hah those are in my annual garden area. I need to do a post on them alone.

Though many of them are pretty ugly, being cats eyed or have end rot.

Damn I am envying t=your amount of herbs indeed. Growing steady and they look strong. It seems like these plants have a good while to go.

Those bolted ones are done I guess. Better use the seeds from the flowers to plant a new batch maybe? (starting inside?)

hehe yeah they are quite happy. Yeah hopefully they will keep growing through out the summer and into the fall before the winter comes along and wipes them out.

I could collect the seeds, but I have some left over that I did not plant so I may just use those first.

Tulsi plant is very beneficial. Adding Tulsi leaves to tea gives relief from cold and phlegm. Chewing basil leaves removes bad breath. I love the smell of basil. Tulsi is meritorious in every way. @solominer

Oh I had to look up what Tulsi is. I think that is a different variety from what I am growing. Still interesting, maybe I will grow it in the future.

thanks for the tips

Basils grow fast! We need to trim it when they start to get flowers since they stop growing. I saw a tip once to trim their nodes before the flower.

Sure does, really happy with how they have been coming along.

Yep that is a good idea, we have been trimming ours.. Some seem to like it but it shocks others.

This is what I would call an absolute masterpiece brother. It's the cleanliness of the place for me, you really put a lot of effort on organizing the area

The process of planting in vases seems to me very beautiful, logically it always requires a lot of care and you are very expert at it. I congratulate you for the love, care and dedication that you put into your agricultural work, which qualifies you as an expert in the discipline of Phytotechnology, which is a branch of Agriculture. Best of luck.

Doing a potted garden has been a unique experience. But a lot of fun, thank you.. I really appreciate you telling me that.

Certainly, it is a delicate work, but very interesting, in particular I like it very much, because from their seedbeds we can see very closely their growth and we are very happy to take care of the plants as they grow. Good luck.

Your herbs are looking good 👍 I literally didn’t plant one thing this season 🙈
I did manage to finally mow my lawn and move the old pots around last weekend 😁

I just finished reading your post in its entirety, but this is the first time I have seen this type of basil in my life 🥰

Oh great, thanks for reading it.

Yes that could be red or purple basil. You can find red and purple varieties of many plants.. such as cauliflower, lettuce and even cannabis.

I can almost smell the herbs in the heat from here! I've really missed my herb garden and can't wait to get back to it. The cost of herbs in the supermarket freak me out too!

How nice that you know how to harvest and grow your own seasonings, I tried but failed haha

I really love the smell of the basil on my hands after picking it. Sure is nice.

Oh, well I have failed too.. luckily the herbs are doing better for us than many of our fruits and veggies.

Hope you can grow some successfully one day.
