Cantos contra la guerra [ESP-ENG]

La humanidad es bastante compleja; en ocasiones, conflictos pequeños estallan en guerras a gran escala, en las que la violencia, el odio, la venganza y el rencor le arrebatan la vida a millones de inocentes. Más allá de la verdad entre los bandos buenos y malos, en el intermedio coexiste un centenar de almas que no pidieron bombas, tanques o armas. Es difícil que, un llamado a la atención y a la paz pueda cambiar esto. Sin embargo, mientras existan voces que intenten marcar la diferencia para que el fuego cese, entonces la esperanza no está del todo perdida.

La música es uno de los métodos más bonitos que existen para hacer un llamado a la paz; músicos, bandas y sinfónicas comparten algo en común: la guerra solo trae sufrimiento. En este post, reflexionaremos un poco al respecto.

Humanity is quite complex; sometimes small conflicts erupt into large-scale wars, in which violence, hatred, revenge, and rancor take the lives of millions of innocent people. Beyond the truth between good and bad sides, in between coexists a hundred souls who did not ask for bombs, tanks, or weapons. It is difficult that a call for attention and peace can change this. However, as long as voices are trying to make a difference so that the fire will cease, then hope is not entirely lost.

Music is one of the most beautiful methods there is to make a call for peace; musicians, bands, and symphonies share something in common: war only brings suffering. In this post, we will reflect a little on this.

A lo largo de nuestra historia, centenares de movimientos han empleado el arte como un símbolo de protesta. La música es uno de esos grandes factores que han evocado, en líricas y voces espléndidas, la dura naturaleza de los conflictos. Quizás, quien escucha una canción puede procesar cada palabra como una alerta de cambio; la realidad es que la gran parte de nosotros es indiferente a lo que pasa en el resto del mundo. ¿Cómo comprender una guerra que está a miles y miles de kilómetros de distancia? De allí ese llamado a la solidaridad tallado en muchas canciones: no podemos ser indiferente a lo que, de alguna forma u otra, afecta a los de nuestra propia raza.

Todos somos humanos al fin.

En mi etapa de adolescente vi muchos conciertos benéficos por TV, en los cuales artistas de gran trayectoria entonaban sus canciones para llamar a la paz entre países, sobre todo aquellos que estaban consumidos en conflictos y guerras. En Latinoamérica, recuerdo haber visto uno por MTV que se llamaba "Paz entre fronteras", el cual se realizó en Colombia y contó con la participación de Juanes. Tanto los asistentes como los cantantes tenían vestimentas blancas, ello para simbolizar el lenguaje universal de la paz.

Throughout our history, hundreds of movements have used art as a symbol of protest. Music is one of those great factors that have evoked, in splendid lyrics and voices, the harsh nature of conflicts. Perhaps, whoever listens to a song can process each word as an alert for change; the reality is that most of us are indifferent to what is happening in the rest of the world. How to understand a war that is thousands and thousands of kilometers away? Hence that call for solidarity is carved in many songs: we cannot be indifferent to what, in one way or another, affects those of our race.

We are all human in the end.

As a teenager, I saw many benefit concerts on TV, in which top artists sang their songs to call for peace between countries, especially those that were consumed in conflicts and wars. In Latin America, I remember seeing one on MTV called "Paz entre fronteras", which was held in Colombia and featured Juanes. Both the attendees and the singers were dressed in white to symbolize the universal language of peace.

Y a pesar de que ya tenía yo una preconcepción de la música como arma de paz, creo que fue John Lennon a quien más admiré por ello. Siempre me pareció muy lamentable su muerte, más allá de las controversias que el cantante acuñaba en su vida personal. Una de las canciones que más me gustó de Lennon fue Imagine. Creo yo, que es la representación perfecta de una utopía que quizás, al menos por ahora, es imposible alcanzar. Con tantos conflictos y crisis, creo que nuestra generación está incrustada en una de las épocas más oscuras de nuestra historia.

Y tal vez solo por eso, sea bueno volver a reflexionar sobre el tema bélico que siempre ha oprimido nuestra existencia. La realidad es que, dudo que las cosas cambien, pero una simple canción puede tocar corazones y, de alguna forma u otra, ayudarnos a virar hacia lo que puede ser irrelevante para nosotros: como la guerra en Ucrania, por ejemplo.

And although I already had a preconception of music as a weapon of peace, I think it was John Lennon whom I admired the most for it. I always found his death very regrettable, beyond the controversies that the singer coined in his personal life. One of the songs I loved most about Lennon was Imagine. I think it is the perfect representation of a utopia that perhaps, at least for now, is impossible to achieve. With so many conflicts and crises, I believe that our generation is embedded in one of the darkest times in our history.

And perhaps for that reason alone, it is good to reflect again on the war theme that has always oppressed our existence. The reality is, I doubt that things will change, but a simple song can touch hearts and, somehow or other, help us turn towards what may be irrelevant to us: like the war in Ukraine, for example.

Digo todo esto, porque hace poco estuve reflexionando sobre los conflictos que resuenan desde occidente y medio oriente, sin dejar a un lado los que sacuden a mi país Venezuela. Hay cosas que no podemos evitar ni cambiar, otras simplemente escapan de nuestras manos. Entonces, tal vez te preguntes, ¿Cómo puede una canción cambiarlo todo? Bueno, es que no se trata de la canción en sí misma, sino de ti, que la escuchas y puedes generar un verdadero cambio. Hacer la diferencia puede ser complicado mientras seamos indiferentes.

La música busca que no lo seas, y que entiendas lo que otros no quieren que entiendas.

Hay una canción en particular que descubrí hace poco, aunque tiene bastante tiempo en la industria. Se trata de Zombie, de la banda irlandesa The Cranberries. Te invito a escucharla a continuación:

I say all this because I was recently reflecting on the conflicts that resonate from the West and the Middle East, without leaving aside those that shake my country Venezuela. There are things that we cannot avoid or change, others simply escape from our hands. So, you may ask yourself, how can a song change everything? Well, it's not about the song itself, it's about you listening to it and making a real change. Making a difference can be complicated as long as we are indifferent.

The music wants you not to be, and to understand what others don't want you to understand.

There is one song in particular that I discovered recently, although it has been in the industry for quite some time. It is Zombie, by the Irish band The Cranberries. I invite you to listen to it below:

La canción es una alegoría profunda a lo que invade nuestra cabeza y la convierte en Zombie. Este canto refleja más que una protesta, pues encarniza la tragedia a la que los inocentes se ven doblegados bajo las armas y las bombas. Los niños son los principales protagonistas... y creo que en la realidad son estos los que más sufren. Es triste ver que el odio de unos pocos termine destruyendo la esperanza de muchos; en ocasiones, la verdad es más amarga aún.

¿Qué otra canción contra conflictos bélicos has escuchado?

Sé que la música no puede detener los tanques o las bombas, pero sí llamar a la reflexión. De alguna forma u otra, hace la diferencia y muestra la verdad. Pero por sobre todo, es capaz de unirnos y reconciliarnos en una sola voz.

The song is a profound allegory to what invades our head and turns it into a Zombie. This song reflects more than a protest, for it embodies the tragedy to which the innocent are bent under guns and bombs. The children are the main protagonists... and I believe that in reality, they are the ones who suffer the most. It is sad to see that the hatred of a few ends up destroying the hope of many; sometimes the truth is even more bitter.

What other anti-war songs have you listened to?

I know that music can't stop tanks or bombs, but it does call for reflection. Somehow or other, it makes a difference and shows the truth. But above all, it can unite and reconcile us in one voice.
