Nunca pensé que Youtube me advertiría acerca del tipo de música que estoy oyendo en los días recientes. De hecho, una de sus notificaciones me informó sobre problemas depresivos y temas sensibles. Todo inició cuando comencé a oír canciones de BoyWithUke, un artista bastante curioso que produce un tipo de música "diferente". No es oscura, ni tampoco suicida, ¡para nada! Son líricas bastante poéticas, que adjuntan el sentido más complejo del amor, la vida y la soledad.

BoyWithUke se está convirtiendo en mi cantante favorito, y en cuanto a Youtube, logré desactivar sus notificaciones. Si bien este artista tiene una modalidad diferente para pincelar su arte musical, no veo nada de malo en este: y ahora, te explico por qué.

I never thought YouTube would warn me about the kind of music I'm listening to in recent days. One of its notifications informed me about depressive problems and sensitive topics. It all started when I started listening to songs by BoyWithUke, a rather curious artist who produces a "different" kind of music. It's not dark, not suicidal, not at all! They are quite poetic lyrics, attaching the most complex sense of love, life, and loneliness.

BoyWithUke is becoming my favorite singer, and as for YouTube, I managed to turn off his notifications. While this artist has a different modality to brush his musical art, I don't see anything wrong with this one: and now, I'll explain why.

A primera vista, BoyWithUke parece uno de esos personajes misteriosos de la televisión. Logré hallar su música en tiktok, en videos que tenían su canción toxic como sonido de fondo. Dicha canción es bastante pegajosa, con algún arreglo en la voz (autotune) que permite una sincronía más melancólica en la letra. Lo que vino después fue un Boom total.

Aunque soy un amante de traducir el significado de las canciones en inglés, con esta pasó algo diferente: Estaba tomando café con una amiga cuando, de pronto, ella comenzó a hablar de los amigos tóxicos, y que por la existencia de gente amarga, ella prefería estar "sola", como en la canción toxic. Fue en ese instante que me enteré de que a mi amiga le gustaba la canción y que, eso era lo que significaba... cuando llegué a casa y busqué la letra traducida al español en Youtube, comprobé que ella decía la verdad.

A partir de ese instante, decidí enlistar a BoyWithUke en mis Playlists.

At first glance, BoyWithUke seems like one of those mysterious TV characters. I managed to find his music on TikTok, in videos that had his song Toxic as background sound. The song is quite catchy, with some autotune in the vocals that allow for a more melancholic sync in the lyrics. What came next was a total Boom.

Although I am a lover of translating the meaning of songs in English, something different happened with this one: I was having coffee with a friend when, all of a sudden, she started talking about toxic friends, and that because of the existence of bitter people, she preferred to be "alone", as in the song toxic. It was in that instant that I found out that my friend liked the song and that, that was what it meant... when I got home and looked up the lyrics translated into Spanish on YouTube, I verified that she was telling the truth.

From that moment on, I decided to list BoyWithUke in my Playlists.

Es cierto lo que dice BoyWithUke, el mundo está lleno de personas tóxicas, de allí esa frase legendaria del cantante, que cita lo siguiente: "estoy mejor conmigo mismo". Al menos en el sentido del reconocimiento propio, es cierto. Yo le agregaría: "Y con las personas correctas". Una de las cosas que me gustan de BoyWithUke es su identidad musical: bastante abstracta, de hecho. Yo lo comparo a la antítesis de SIA. Mientras escucho las canciones de BoyWithUke suelo reír por lo que dice en sus líricas. At least in the sense of self-recognition, it is true. I would add: "And with the right people". One of the things I like about BoyWithUke is his musical identity: quite abstract. I liken him to the antithesis of SIA. She hides her face to frame her music, and he tries to break away from the paradigm of imprisoned identity. They are opposite sides of the same musical coin.

While listening to BoyWithUke's songs I often laugh at what he says in his lyrics. In Migraine he says to himself, "I'm just a guy acting dumb" about the wild model of the music industry and the whirlwind of assumed rivalries. Let's be honest: the dream of many singers is to make it big, and in that cycle of new voices, some don't make it. That fear of failing or being forgotten then becomes a real headache.

El video musical es bastante detallista en esa lucha que ha enfrentado el cantante consigo mismo. Me he identificado con alguna de las frases que dice en su lírica: en cada instante, en cada cosa que hagas, habrá personas dispuestas a renegar de lo que haces. No es que sea un problema mientras no permitas que eso te afecte y te cause "migraña". Para trabajar por el éxito, solo hay que estar enfocados y punto. Es una ley que nunca falla. Por esta razón es que las canciones de BoyWithUke suelen ganarse mi corazón al instante.

Algo que he notado en los videos musicales de este cantante, es el protagonismo que cobra su máscara. BoyWithUke hace guiños a que se la va a quitar, y en Migraine podemos ver parte de su barbilla. En la actualidad, su identidad no es un secreto; de hecho, el propio cantante narra su frustración al vivir en el anonimato, sin poder fusionar su arte con lo que en verdad lo identifica: la confianza. En esta entrevista él confiesa esa parte oscura de vivir tras una máscara.

Debo decir que, al menos en este aspecto, me identifico mucho con BoyWithUke. De hecho, ahora es que me estoy abriendo un poco más a las redes sociales, porque usualmente no me gusta mostrarme mucho. No soy cantante, pero soy una persona, y al igual que él, tengo inseguridades... ¡Gracias a Dios existe la música!

I have identified with some of the phrases he says in his lyrics: in every moment, in everything you do, there will be people ready to deny what you do. Not that it's a problem as long as you don't let it affect you and cause you a "migraine". To work for success, you just have to be focused, period. It is a law that never fails. This is why BoyWithUke's songs tend to win my heart instantly.

Something I've noticed in this singer's music videos is the prominence of his mask. BoyWithUke winks that he's going to take it off, and in Migraine we can see part of his chin. At present, his identity is not a secret; in fact, the singer himself narrates his frustration at living in anonymity, unable to merge his art with what truly identifies him: confidence. In this interview he confesses the dark part of living behind a mask.

I must say that, at least in this aspect, I identify a lot with BoyWithUke. Now I'm opening up a bit more on social media because I usually don't like to show myself a lot. I'm not a singer, but I'm a person, and just like him, I have insecurities... Thank God there is music!

Beyond the singer's style and lyrics, I admit that this is the first time I hear the Ukelele in pop rhythms. Maybe it's been done before, but at least for me, it's a novelty.
