The Turn of the Century - The Start of the End?

Another Dance Classics post?... well kind of. It's been a while since I hit HIVE with a music post, but what type?

If you know me, then you will probably know by the turn of the century that my ears were turning sour to popular music. Now, I don't even listen to the new shit that's on offer.

@dismayedworld only last week, advised me not to bother listening to the current top twenty. I find that comment disturbing. At the age of 21, I was engrossed in music and loved 90% of what was on offer.

If it was just me getting old and stuck in the nineties, I could fully understand that concept, but a 'don't bother listening to any of that shit, cuz I don't'.., well, it makes me think that when all these old legends die, there will be nobody left.

Except Taylor Swift, and sorry, but I am not a big fan. I don't hear anything special, but she must have something, and I respect that.

The turn of the century; It was still decent, at least for a little while. Let me take you back 25 years or less, and if you are younger than 30, then there's probably something new here for you.

All Saints – Black Coffee (Saints & Sinners – 2000)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

This girly band turned up in the late 1990s and had a massive hit with 'Never Ever'. On the sidelines, I was cringing and throwing up. Fuck.. do we need another Spice Girls, but worse, as this was verging on nauseating.

While ‘Never Ever’ might have been a huge hit in the UK, it didn’t even turn a single head in the US, but mind you, the rest of their short discography also didn't register.

Never Ever.JPG

I had written them off, more of that 'Girl Power' bullshit that was feeding the feminists of that time. Then three years later, I heard 'Pure Shores’ and that got my ear.

While 'Pure' was decent, the follow-up, 'Black Coffee', did it. That chorus line was so catchy, and I was able to listen and keep my bacon sandwich down. Had they changed, and this was going to set a precedent?

I don't know, as after this, besides the lacklustre 'War of Nerves', All Saints fell by the wayside and vanished.

Delerium featuring Sarah McLachlan – Silence (Karma – 1999)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

We didn't quite make it to 2000, but it's close. This is a nineties song, and you can hear it. If you didn't already know it, the nineties was the decade of dance music; it was great if you loved this type of music.

Sarah McLachlan carved out a career for herself as a solo artist, but just like in today's world, where no bastard can make a song themselves… such as 'Calvin Harris featuring Jimmy Harris and Arnold Cuntface' is quite normal…, there were a few of these before it became mainstream.

There's also a lot of mixes of this song, too bloody many and finding the regular one took a little searching. Sarah's vocals bring this one out, but by itself, it's a hypnotic number that caught my ear around the year 2000.

Shapeshifters – Lola's Theme (Sound Advice – 2004)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

2004, well, what do you know? I was quite sure this one turned up around 2000, and it makes me happy to see something in the 00's that was actually quite good.

Lola's Theme still sounds like it belongs in the 1990s, though it does have that fade-in, fade-out mechanic that grew to be quite popular in the early 00's.

It's all clear, then it goes murky.., well, just listen to it, there's probably a technical term for that type of sound from this period.

As usual, it was ignored by the Americans, as they don't tend to like the Euro-style of dance music. In the UK, it was number one, but I could not have told you that until now.

You see, by 2004, I was already ignoring the music scene, at least the popular type. It would progressively get worse, and by the 10's.., there was little left.

Now, well, if you like what you are hearing, then all I can see is that you are easily pleased.

RedLine.png

Even now, I am still tempted to go and listen to the UK top ten. Is everything really so shit, would I be wasting 30 minutes of my life?

Number 1.JPG

Amazingly, I have heard of Chappel Roan, thanks to @dismayedworld, whereas 'HUNTR/X featuring EJAE, Audrey Nuna & Rei’ confirms to me that to have a hit, half a dozen people need to be credited.

It's OK, I suppose, but it's hardly raising any bumps on my arms. Should I bother listening to 'HUNTR/X’ as well as their cronies?

Yeah, that and Silence.. I loved them both, though that's not the best 'Silence' remix. Some tunes managed to get a dozen versions, I don't know why?

quality tunes today are not as frequent as they were in the 70's, 80's and 90's

Oooh that Shapeshifters song, I remember that! I have a reminesce of watching that video somewhere on tv and the song was played on the radio in Italy too

And about Chappell Roan, I've only listened Pink pony club, like 200 times on the radio at work... Really nothing special, I don't get why she's so idolized these days. I think it's more of a queer-feminist-charismatic character thing than the actual music talent.

@dismayedworld forwarded me a few Chappell Roan songs some weeks ago. None of them hit the spot, but I didn't think they were unduly bad either. I'm hard to please.

Have you discovered any hidden gems?

Not lately, but that's down to me not bothering to look.

On the theme of female led bands:

And one more heavy one to finish off:

Hello, I loved your content. The truth is that not many of us have the ability to appreciate the art of music. I hope to join the #music community to share what I have learned over the years. Thank you for sharing with us. Greetings from Venezuela ♥

The era of band factories in the 90s and oughts was terrible. It all felt plastic.

Stock, Aitkin & Waterman? Yes.. very plastic music, but more akin to the 80's, unless you mean something else.

I'm likely blurring together several "factory" made bands and remembering more than there were.

The details are good enough for information. You have a good output and thanks for that!

Listened to some 'newish' sound with sons around, have not really bothered to go out specifically to find.

I suppose what comes around goes around, my Dad hated Yellow Submarine when we had it blaring, not music all a big noise today! Yup suppose I can now relate still prefer the sound we had....

Hello, honestly, of those you mentioned, I only know Taylor Swift and very briefly. I'm not much of a music listener, however, I like to know the musical genre.

I still listen to some of the current stuff, but pop music in general just doesn't hold a candle to some of the alternative stuff that is out there now. Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo would be the exceptions for me.

Yo adoro las baladas de los 90. La música disco y electrónica. En la actualidad hay mucha gente que pretende hacer música sin el menor talento.
