Slobberchops' Dance Classics - From the Nineties

avatar
(Edited)

It may well amaze you that besides digging ‘weird stuff’ I am, or was into some of the nineties dance tunes that popped up, also known as 'House Music' in some cases.

Speaking from my perspective as a dinosaur, this to me was the last decade of anything decent and probably why the majority of my tunes are from this period or earlier.

At the ripe old age of 20, @dismayedworld can't abide today's music and listens to all this old stuff, but not necessarily my picks. At that age, I couldn't have listened to the crap my late father was into, though we had a few things in common such as the excellent 'Can't Slow Down' by Lionel Ritchie.

As for ‘Dance Classics’, I can’t see this being an especially long series of tunes, as I was pretty selective even then.

Too Blind to See it – Kym Sims (Too Blind to See It – 1991)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

One thing I do from time to time is check these old artists on Wikipedia, just to see what they are up to now. Many of them had one or two hits and then vanished into obscurity. Kym Sims tried to follow up, but this was ultimately her big hit.

....Kym is trying to make a come-back. With just one recognisable song, it's going to be tough. Maybe a hat would help?'...

In the USA this song barely registered unless you were into the dance scene, and 'Too Blind to See it' fared much better on my side of the pond.

The distinct piano intro contains that typical nineties sound; not just the nineties but more so the early part. Later, this type of sound faded away and was replaced by Britpop, at least in the UK.

Of course, the mandatory short rap crap part has to be somewhere in the middle and tolerated. It was a 'thing' then.

Touch Me – Rui da Silva featuring Cassandra (Single – 2000)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

I did think this was from the nineties and never thought to look before now. I also had no idea that 'Rui da Silva' was a DJ. I am not a fan of these DJs making music, but if they get a decent singer then that can change things.

'Touch Me' is a thumping dance song of the finest calibre that adds more as it develops, culminating in ecstasy for those dance-floor types. Add one of those small white tablets and it would take you off into space somewhere.

I can't remember where I picked this track up from, but I did listen to the radio more in those times. DJs making songs is big business in today's world, but then it was only starting to develop.

Always There – Incognito ft. Jocelyn Brown (Single – 1991)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

Going back to 1991, we hear those familiar janky piano riffs again. I had no idea Jocelyn was 72 years old (now). It shows how old these tunes I am showing you really are.

This one has been in my ‘Slobberchops Choice Cuts' selection forever, a single repository of almost 900 mixed-up songs from all periods.

From the time when pop songs included horns and brass, I was surprised to find 'Always There' is a cover of an even earlier rendition made in 1976. I must have missed it the first time around, or Incognito changed it so much that it was unrecognizable.

So this is quite a cheesy post for me, and I am not subjecting you to another round of alternative weirdness, basically because I have little left in the pot to offer.

There’s nothing wrong with a little mainstream, even if it is well over 30 years old. You might even catch one of these in your local supermarket, though I hope not.

Overplaying kills tunes, and makes us never want to hear them again. It's (almost) Christmas and soon we are all going to be subjected to another annual round of musical shite again.

Make your trips to Tesco, short and snappy.

Many of those brings back memories of seeing them on The Box at 3am after the clubs have closed! lol..

'The Box', it should ring a bell but somehow doesn't. I was watching MTV as far back as 1988 when the Satellite dish phenomenon hit the UK, and that was my major supplies of tunes.

Yeah, they had MTV too, but The Box had the very latest releases first usually. Plus people could dial in..

I looked it up on YouTube, it kind of rings a bell, somewhere distant!

Ha, classics man!!! I love some 90s style house. Too Blind to See is my fave but I love em all, something about the jerky piano!

Now doesn't it make a change you to know all the tunes for once! The Silva track is my pick from these, that is one intense beating tune for when you are off your trolley!

I was always quite fond of being off my trolley!!! 😀

Not really my thing, but I can enjoy the odd song. A good singer always helps. I find a lot of 'dance' music too repetitive. These days I don't listen to that much radio so I have little idea of what is current or in the charts. There's always interesting new music out there, but it may not be easy to find.

I should stick on the radio, it's been so long. In the car it's audiobooks and when I do put on the radio I get bombarded with eighties classics... sigh.

Radio 1 wasn't it? You get the odd tune between the mindless chit-chat.

I can say that 90s music was the best in my country, perhapa in some countries as well ;)

I have mixed feelings about that decade, and it depends which end!

I don't think I have ever heard of any of those songs before.

None of these are the super-hits as they, like everything else are constantly played even now here.

I am not surprised you haven't heard them, I guess the Dance Scene then in America was quite underground esp. when it comes to Euro material.

Yes, that makes a lot of sense. I don't remember much dance music growing up beyond disco.

It was more a Euro thing, like your guys and your 'Country' 😀

Oh man, my ears are hurting.

I'll be honest and say I've never heard any of these tracks before (or will again) but how bloody 90's are they! Classic.

Yes, the 90's (early part) had a certain sound that everyone copied (nothing new there!), and holds an association with a certain psychotic woman I was dating at the time.

That part is not pleasant, but the music still remains. 😀

Haha, so diplomatic...the certain psychotic woman comment. Ah yeah, the 90's...good times, good times...but...the music. Good grief.

She's ended up married to some fucking idiot (I did some internet spying) and her surname has changed. Must be hell on earth for the poor bloke.

I can't remember all of them as I wasn't even born when they were released but you gotta love those classics. I remember hearing my parents playing this kind of music loud on the house and in the car during our trips.

as I wasn't even born when

LOL, but now when you visit a supermarket what you hear in the background is a lot of eighties music. It's little wonder the 20's something's of today are quite attuned to 'ancient music' as they can hardly close their ears to it.

I think the music of the 90s has the same beauty in every country.
