Alternative Weekend: The Gathering

It’s not often a new band clicks with me. The last one was Lush in early 2020, over three years ago.

As usual it’s taken me many plays for these songs to register apart from ‘Leaves’ which was an insta-click, something almost unheard of.

YouTube tends to link me a lot of crap, but I listen to it anyway. It’s supposed to pave the way for music similar to what you listen to often and this time it was a rare hit.

I listened to some Death Metal tune along with the usual growling and then all of a sudden an apparition of a female singer with an infectious smile appears and manages to get her voice across the entire din. It takes some doing, and I was smitten from the first listen and had to dig more.

I am sure @verhp11 is very aware of this band being from Holland but singing in English and may well have featured them within his past writings.

From what I can gather (no pun intended), the band took off after recruiting a new vocalist for their new album Mandylion in 1995.

Leaves – The Gathering (Mandylion – 1995)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

I am listening to 'The Gatherings' most revered album as I write this article. Heavy stuff is my feeling, and I mean metal, there's no doubt about that. 'Eleanor' I am told is a crowd pleaser and always played live.

However, it is 'Leaves' that brought them attention within the Metal community, and I can understand why. From a quiet opening sequence I could attribute to a number of progressive style bands, it explodes with the awesome voice of Anneke van Giersbergen and barely lets up from there.

Those Doom Metalheads must have realised they had a winner on their hands when they heard that voice, and laid eyes on that infectious smile of hers.

Nighttime Birds – The Gathering (Nighttime Birds – 1997)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

Two years later and the band released their second album with Anneke van Giersbergen as the vocalist. Nighttime Birds was a darker sound and from what I have heard so far, more industrial than the energetic, rambunctious sounds of Mandylion.

This track took me a few listens to digest. The gloom and doom finally took it's toll and wore me down, though the chorus if you can call it that, fails to explode somewhat.

At over 6 minutes, it does get into your brain and I have found myself tormented short-term with an annoying Nighttime Birds earworm. I hope it fucks off, for although I like the song that's a little much.

This title track contains a melancholic epic edge all the way through. If you are in a dark place, then listening to this may be a particularly bad idea. Try Barbie Girl as an alternative.

Waking Hour – The Gathering (Home – 2006)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

Let's skip a few albums and several years and move to the last album Anneke sang on before leaving the band one year later. 'The Gathering' would recruit another female vocalist and continue, but in my opinion 'Silje Wergeland' does not have the raw power of Anneke.

'Home' is a more subdued effort from what I have heard so far. Could it be the rockers were ageing and their music was turning a little more mellow.

If so, I am glad as this is rather good although you will need to listen to it a few times (like me) to hear that. That voice, fucking hell, it's up there with the best female vocalists I have heard and touching on the quality of the legend that is 'Agnetha Fältskog'.

RedLine.png

This brings me to the song that popped up on my YouTube feed. It's some bloke growling away with hair all over his face so you can't tell who's under it.

I wasn't taken with it and am still not a fan. When Anneke popped up, well that got my attention. Strange where these music links take you, isn't it?

I suspect I will be listening to a lot more 'The Gathering' in the next few weeks. There has to be more gems to unearth within their extensive discography. These Dutch bands are not half unusual.

I defo preferred the early ones with a bit more chug. You can see that they have mellowed as they have aged.

The growling in the last Amorphis one is hilarious at about 3 and a half minutes in 😀

LOL, she seems to out of place with that, and I love things that are different than the X-Factor drivel we have to endure today.

Some of the other tracks on Mandylion are heavier than what I showed you. Might be more suited to you. Coordinated headbanging by the band, always makes me chuckle.

I am having a look at their other stuff. You are so right, coordinated headbanging is hilarious!

Kind of reminds me of the Pretty Reckless a little bit. I might have to make a deep dive into both of them today. I dig stuff like this. Metal with a female front is cool enough to grab my attention. Kind of like Baby Metal. I just heard the other day on the radio that the guy from Porcupine Tree has something new in the works I think.

I had to look them up, she reminds me of Courtney Love, just a bit.

Yes, Mr Wilson has a solo album imminent. He's been releasing several singles of it, of varying quality. Can't be worse than the last album, I thought he was losing it for a while.

I also heard that Roger Waters is doing a remake of Dark Side of the Moon. It's just him solo and from what I heard it is stripped down and even more mellow (if that is possible).

He doesn't half farm that old stuff, I wish he'd leave it be.

I wasn't impressed with the remake of "Time" they played on the radio the other day.

I didn't hear of them before or think you would find something in Holland. Seems similar to Nightwish and Therion that I heard this week too. I like the last song the best, abit more mellow for me :)

The last song is great, I love a good melody and it's far from metal.

The Gathering been around for ages, and I hear them from time to time. Souvenirs was an album remember the most from. It is great that you found them, and I do a similar thing, sometimes you do find a gem.

Souvenirs.., I am aware of it but haven't reached it yet! I tend to go through discographies once I like someone, so I will get there.

Wow, she has a cool voice! Blends so well with the heavy metal. Like @bozz kind of reminds me of The Pretty Reckless. I'm going to have to listen to more of The Gathering here today! Awesome stuff!

I did not know this band, and I really like the singer's voice. I definitely prefer this genre to barbie girl by Acqua :)
I also really liked the last song which creates a nice contrast between her musical and melodic voice and the music although I would have had her sing only at the end of the song :)

The musical universe is so wide, it's always nice to discover bands I didn't know before. Thanks

Hehe, the contrast is so wide, I generally use that as a dichotomy by example!

She has a great voice and I'm surprised I hadn't heard of them before. I may have caught a video at some point. Metal can be a bit of a sausage party with lots of 'manly' guys in leather. The women tend to stand out. The growling doesn't do it for me anyway.

I have a feeling I have come across them but it didn't stuck, this it has!

Growling..., besides Opeth, and in short busts it's not for me either. It's a shame @verhp11 isn't about, it could have been him that made the original brush by. That 'Waking Hour' has been in my head all day, this is what you get.. 😏

I do know them well. Anneke participated in a show "Best singers" , so she is 'hot' again in the Netherlands. Strange machines was their breaktrough on the dutch festival 'Pinkpop", they have been arround a long time, I like the heavy riffs with the melodic influences a lot :) Great post !!

'Strange Machines' is great, I am trying to get into the rest of their stuff. I checked her touring schedule, she doesnt come to the UK much and it's always London 😕
