Sitar Saturday - Rhythm Section

avatar

Its time for the rhythm section of #sitarsaturday

First we start off with some tabla. These drums are what you usually hear accompanying a sitar. They can play super fast and the drums are tuned in tones to accompany the tuning of the sitar.

Another popular percussion instrument to accompany sitar is the Ghatam. The audio quality of this video isn't the greatest but the performance is top notch.

Kanjira is another one you often hear backing up the sitar. It is such a basic little drum but the tones you can get out of them with pitch bending can be quite complex. Plus being able to belt out a beat this fast while tossing them up in the air takes a lot of skill.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

It is interesting. Have you ever heard about dangdut music in Indonesia? Dangdut music also uses traditional drums like this which we call "gendang" and it sounds good.

I have been to a few gamelan concerts here and I believe they had something similar to a gendang drum in the mix with all the other instruments. Is it the one front and center of this video?

Definitely adds to the entertainment value. Have to animate yourself based on the type of drum hit lol. The older guy to the right of that guy is quite the master I've seen him in some other videos. I wonder if he tapes his fingers for tone or if they are all beatup from playing the pot drum his whole life.

I love the rhythmic lyrics in this one. The old guy should get some colorful hockey tape to dress up his fingers lol

That will probably be my next sitar satruday post, that type of singing percussion is called sitar bol. Its pretty hilarious where you're trying to imitate the sound of the tabla with your mouth.
