Sitar Saturday - Konnakol (Drum Language)

Here's some more percussion for #sitarsaturday

Here's is what is known as Konnakol aka drum language. You use your hands to clap out the odd timing of the metronome then make a few different drum words to represent different types of hits on the drum. It's a good way to kind of sketch out the rhythm before playing it on the actual drum. Here in the west we call it beat boxing lol.

Sadly I couldn't find any examples of Konnakol with sitar playing at the same time. This is the best I could find lol. A guy wiping down a sitar while doing Konnakol lol. I know I saw Anoushka Shankar play sitar live with her drummer doing Konnakol, but I couldn't find any video of it.

Here is a Spanish guy remixing a fast Konnakol video with his guitar metal. Its a good thing the Konnakol singers were in perfect timing so he could make some fast metal riffs over it.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Konnakol is much more elegant than beat boxing 🙂 the metal riffs over the Konnakol is cool. Seems so natural to listen to together but then looking at the split screen it seems like two different worlds lol

That guy is a genius at remixing videos with his guitar. Most of his videos are of various internet moments like this

Excellent mix of traditional guitar and metal! I play by ear, I've never taken lessons but I know that if I can whistle a song, I can play it on guitar or keyboard. It's a bit like whistling hahahaha

Great way to learn guitar. It lets you get more creative rather than just playing scales. I learned keyboard by ear but guitar I took a few lessons.

This kinda reminds me of this weird early 80s European " hip hop influenced" song by George Kranz

I do hear the similarities, maybe they secretly went to India to learn drum language.
