Art Talk: Musical Instrument Museum
The Art Talk highlight this year is museums and today I am highlighting a fascinating museum in Phoenix Arizona. After hearing about this museum for many years I went and it was so cool!
The Musical Instrument Museum is so big! 200,000 square feet (60,960 square meters)! It has musical instruments from nearly 200 countries.
Note: The information about the instruments are taken from the pictures of the plaques next to the instruments in the museum.
Treasures, Legendary Musical Instruments
The first exhibit we went to is Treasures, Legendary Musical Instruments. I am not sure if it was my favorite because it was the first or because it had the coolest instruments. Here is a look at this special exhibit.
Baroque Guitar, Portugal, 1590 | Violin, Italy, 1559 | Harps, Central Africa, 1850-1875 |
I really appreciated that there were videos with artists playing some of the instruments in the collection.
"Patent Harp Guitar"
Pennsylvania, UAS, 1834-1838
Spruce, maple, ebony, ivory, mother of pearl
If you would also like to hear what the harp guitar sounds like his a video from the Musical Instrument museum page.
For those guitar and Jimmy Hendrix fans. Here is his Black Widow guitar, 1968
Guitars
We then moved to a all guitar exhibit. Wow there are some cool guitars!
Geographic Galleries
The first two exhibits were wonderful and took a bit of time to go through. It was nothing compared to the time to go through the galleries for different regions of the world. Wow you could spend days at this museum!

Experience Gallery
This area was really fun. We got to play some instruments. Some of the pictures are mine and some are from Jodi.
Fun times at the MIM
If you are in the Phoenix area this is a great museum.

This is such an interesting museum Sara and I love how they use instruments to link up time and place. Plus you get to play with some of them! Our little English corner looks a little bland compared to other countries, but thanks so much for highlight it 😄
Hi Pauline, yes I don't remember seeing Taiwan, there are a lot of countries represented. Maybe it was a little livelier!
I don't think there is a single musical instrument left that is not in this museum. After looking at these pictures, I realized that there were many musical instruments that I had never seen before and the beautiful girl in the video playing the guitar is very unique and loving to see and also that guitar available in the museum as well we have seen in the pictures. Too much variety of guitars and others.
Yes there is an amazing variety of instruments and a person could spend days exploring all of them.
This place is no doubt a dream place for every music lover, He/she should visit this place at least once in her/his life. Those who love to know about the music history or music instruments history, they should also visit this place to see these classic and old music instruments.
Yes, this place is for music and non music lovers both. I am not much of a music person and it was such a great museum.

Wow this place is HUGE!!!
It looks like an amazing museum to visit and virtually travel all over the world through the music :)
Yes, exactly. It was cool cause you had headphones on that triggered to play when you were Infront of the screen at each place. So everyone could hear the music they wanted and were not interrupting others with their own curated musical journey!
WOW!!! What an amazing place! I would love to visit, that was really sweet that you thought of us :) The experience gallery must have been so interesting! Museums are great, but when they give you the opportunity to really touch instruments and experience their sound made by you, then they are perfect!
Is this a woven carpet in the Norway gallery? I love how they have combined all cultural aspects around music. Such a beautiful place!
Hi @traisto yes I agree it really adds to the experience when you can create. The experience part was fun! Good eye with the woven carpet. I really loved the costumes and didn't realize they had added other textiles from the country too.
Haha, I can't miss them :)
Scandinavia has a beautiful weaving culture!
Hey Sara, hope you're doing well :) This is a beautiful museum that displays a variety of musical instruments. I enjoyed visiting it through your post and am glad you had great time exploring around ❤️
Hi Trang. I am doing well, thanks so much! It is fun to keep up with each other through our posts. :)
