About the XR-20:

When hardware drum machines were losing ground to more versatile software, Akai released the XR20 Beat Production Station in 2008. This portable drum machine aimed to attract hip-hop and R&B producers with its live performance capabilities.

The XR20 features a classic design. Its LCD screen is in the top-left corner, with 12 pads below it for triggering sounds. These pads can play individual drums, one-shots, synth sounds, or even full patterns when in Pattern Play Mode. Next to the pads are the Pad Play Buttons, used to select which sounds the pads control. In the top-right, the Value Dial allows for adjusting settings, a function also achievable with the INC/DEC buttons directly below it. Further down, Page Right/Left buttons help navigate menus, and number buttons are available for direct value input. The center of the front panel is dedicated to Mode, Setup, Transport Control Buttons, and other general controls.

On the rear panel, you'll find the DC In, On/Off Switch, and Volume knob. It offers 1/4" TS Right/Left Outputs, a headphones output, Aux L/R, a microphone input, and MIDI In, Out/Thru. There's also a Start/Stop Footswitch input, a Count/A/B/Fill input, and a Kensington lock. A notable drawback is the absence of any USB port.

The XR20's primary strengths are its lightweight design and battery power, making it highly portable. Sound-wise, it includes 100 fixed preset patterns and 100 blank slots for user-created patterns. Its hundred preset kits feature 720 onboard samples (414 drum hits, 306 one-shots) and 64 synth sounds (leads, basses, etc.).

Ultimately, the XR20 was an intriguing product for its era, especially for those seeking a traditional drum machine experience. However, its lack of a sampler and the absence of USB connectivity significantly limit its utility today.
