ThreeTuneTuesday: ExYU Rock 5 (War)

avatar

Hello music lovers! 🎵

My 17th post for #threetunetuesday, started by @ablaze, and I'll end here with a story about rock music in former Yugoslavia, a country between East and West, and although the music was wonderful and unique, the country fell apart in the 1990s and ended in agony, violence, and blood.

You know what they say, when it's at its worst, that's when the music is at its best.

If you're interested, you can read, listen and watch the Starter, Golden Era, Supergroups, Punk and New Wave.

I won't write anything about the war in the 1990s, if only because it's still, after 30 years, a dividing issue in the Balkans, with too much pain and too many lives needlessly lost. People are still divided, even though the current war in Ukraine has shown that the Balkans are divided in half, so I will leave that to historians and psychologists.

But music blurs boundaries and since then there have been many bands that are popular everywhere, not just in their national districts.
Of course, this is again my selection and it can be discussed in the comments.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Siddharta

Starting in the North (no particular reason except that I'm from there), Siddharta is a Slovenian rock band, formed in 1995 and named as well-known Herman Hesse novel.
They quickly became a live attraction, mainly for their full melodic and harder sound, releasing their first album ID in 1999 and 10 albums in total so far. They have received numerous awards and nominations at home and in Europe.
This song, "My Dice" has been for a long time on the charts MTV EMA – Best Adriatic Act for year 2005.

Majke

Majke, or (in translation Mothers) are a cult Croatian band from Vinkovci, founded in 1984 and started playing, under the influence of MC5, Flamin' Groovies, Steppenwolf, The Stooges, and many others. The first album "Razum i Bezumlje" (translated as "Reason and Mindlessness") was released in 1990 and became the rock album of the year, but the band's success was limited by the outbreak of the Croatian War of Independence and the death of one member, so they disbanded.
In 1992, frontman Goran Bare went to Zagreb with a drummer, found new members, and formed Majke again. In 1993 they released their second album "Razdor" ("Breaking" in Translation) and again enjoyed great success. Although the heavy character of frontman Baret has led to many changes of members, the band still plays successfully everywhere. They have released seven albums and won several Croatian music awards.
This song, "Budi Ponosan" (in English "Be Proud") is from their second album Razdor and was recorded as an unplugged version in 2009.

Partibrejkers

Partibrejkers (in English means Party Breakers) is a Serbian band from Belgrade, they formed in 1982, released first album in 1985 called Partibrejkers I. The band has numerous changes, they picked up influences from the Stooges, early Rolling Stones combined with blues and rock'n'roll. They were very well received all over Yugoslavia and even now, not only because of their music but also because of their anti-war activism. So far they have released 10 studio albums and some compilations.
The song "Dugo te nema" (in translation "You've been gone for a long time") is from their eighth album "Sloboda ili Ništa" (in English "Freedom or Nothing") from 2007.

As always, there must be a little bonus :)

Atomsko Sklonište - Pomorac Sam Majko

Atomsko Sklonište (or Atomic Shelter) was hard rock band from Pula, Croatia. Formed in 1977, singer Sergio Blažić died of cancer in 1986. They still play in altered configurations but more sporadically. I mention them here mainly because of their first hard rock album "Ne cvikaj generacijo" (in English "Generation, don't be scared") from 1977, which I had on vinyl and listened to with pleasure, and still do sometimes. They remind me of Deep Purple. They released eight albums, even three in English language for the European market, as Atomic Shelter.
This song, Pomorac sam Majko (in translation "I'm a sailor, Mother") is from the first album.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Zabranjeno Pušenje - Zenica Blues

Zabranjeno Pušenje (or in translation "No Smoking") is a rock band from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Formed in 1980, they were best known for their garage rock with folk elements. They were part of the so-called New Primitivism, a movement in punk and new wave, including being part of the team behind the most-watched satirical show in Yugoslavia, Top Lista Nadrealista (something like the Monty Python Show), which criticized the socialist system in an original way. When the war in Bosnia started, the band broke up, part of the band went to Belgrade, and the others continued in Sarajevo and are still playing today.
This song, Zenica Blues, is from the first album Das Ist Walther? from 1984 and is one of their biggest hits. Zenica was a prison for murderers in the former Yugoslavia.

I agree, music does blur boundaries. These days, I see people sing our songs on social media and I am like, "Okay, this is cool" ...hehehhe

Great picks for your #ttt for this week. Great beats! Sounds and harmony!

The crowd in the video for Budi Ponosan was really into it! That's awesome, just what live music is all about.

You're welcome! I listen to them live many times. They're still playing but only one original member. And it's not the same.

Cool man, Partibrejkers have a a funky sound and worth listening to for sure, thanks for the share. You are really putting these bands on the map, a lot of us would never hear these songs without you sharing them.

As I mention, these posts make sense if they're interesting for others too. I always like to share something I like. At least a little something I can do for these musicians.
