Three Tune Tuesday - Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel

avatar

Hello, music lovers! 🎡

On #threetunestuesday, I go back to listening to music growing up and absorbing the music I had access to. And as usual, I pulled something out of the old box again.

When driving, I mostly listen to music mixes I've made and stored on my phone. When I've had enough of that, I listen to the radio. Yesterday, an old song reminded me of the years I spent hanging around as a teenager.

For those not (yet) familiar with #threetunetuesday or #ttt - these are tags you need to set when you post.

It's a music initiative started by @ablaze, and with his words, the jist is as follows:

Every Tuesday, I'm going to share three songs that I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Better still, why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post, and I'll come, and find the post and upvote it. If you could also use #threetunetuesday tag that would be great, as that is what I use when sifting through all the entries every Wednesday. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music. You'll also be given a chance of winning the reward.

Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel was an English band based in London, formed in 1972. As the name suggests, the frontman was Steve Harley, a singer, guitarist, and songwriter. The band was most active in the 1970s and early 1980s. They played sporadically on the waves of old glory for the last twenty years, almost until Harley's death last March.
Musically, they revolved around pop, glam, and progressive rock. Some have also linked them to the so-called 'cockney culture,' or the distinctive dialect of East London, but Harley denied any such links, except that he grew up in that environment.

Here are some of their songs that are still on rotation.

Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)

The song is a single from their third album, 1975's The Best Years of Our Lives, and was one of their biggest hits in popularity and sales. It reached high positions on the pop charts around the world at the time. The lyrics are sarcastic, about disappointment in someone close to you and the hope of reconciliation. More than a hundred other musicians have also covered this song, the most famous being those by Duran Duran and Erasure.

🎡 🎧 🎡

Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Sebastian

Sebastian is a single from their debut album, The Human Menagerie. It is an example of baroque pop, a style combining rock and classical music elements.
It was very popular in all European countries, but in the UK, it didn't even reach the bottom of the charts when it was released. Listeners and critics didn't notice until later, in the following years.
The song is a dramatic ballad, carrying an atmosphere of melancholy and loss and allowing the listener to interpret it for themselves.

🎡 🎧 🎡

Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Sling It!

The song is from his second album, 1974's The Psychomodo, and is about survival and unburdening in chaotic circumstances, theatrically and ironically, which is typical of most of Harley's songs.
Instrumentally and musically, I like it mainly for its energy and the combination of violins and guitars with a glam rock touch.

🎡 🎧 🎡

And now a bonus.

Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Here Comes The Sun

The song is from their fifth studio album, Love's a Prima Donna, released in 1976. It covers one of the Beatles' most famous songs, written by George Harrison. This recording is from a 1984 concert in London.

That's all for today, thank you for your attention.

This is my 68th post for #threetunetuesday, which @ablaze started.
I hope what I'm sharing is enjoyable for others, too, because then it makes sense.

Have no idea how many laps the Cockney Rebel vinyl discs did on my old Dual turntable? It must have been a marathon, though. And the best thing about it was that I didn't shy away from blasting the music out of the speakers at every opportunity in London. The band was virtually unknown on the island. But they shared this fate with Fisher Z, Alan Parson and Smokie. Whereby, you don't really need to know the last mentioned anywhere.

Alan Parsons was their sound engineer or producer, I think, on some albums. I have listened to Parsons several times. I never digested Smokie, for Fisher Z heard of it.
