Three Tune Tuesday - Sax Mood
Hello, music lovers! π΅
It's a Tuesday, so it's time for #threetunetuesday! And a chance to share something I'm listening to.
On my way to work this morning, I heard some saxophone solos on the radio. I thought it might be a good idea to write something along these lines for #ttt.
Now that I'm home, I've done it.
Today, I will share some songs where the saxophone plays a key role or helps the song become memorable and timeless.
I guess I'm being a bit dramatic for just a few songs that most of you probably remember :)
For those who are not (yet) familiar with #threetunetuesday or #ttt - these are tags you need to set when you post.
It's a music initiative started by @ablaze, and with his words, the jist is as follows:
Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs that I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Better still, why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and upvote it. If you could also use #threetunetuesday tag that would be great, as that is what I use when sifting through all the entries every Wednesday. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music. You'll also be in with a chance of winning the reward.
Many songs came to my mind, but that's a subjective choice; I'm sure someone else can choose something similar or better. But they are lovely pop songs that have marked a particular part of my life, and if I had been writing about #newtunes at the time, I would certainly have included them in a post :)
Martha and The Muffins - Echo Beach
Martha and the Muffins are a Canadian band that has played since 1977. They have released ten albums. Although they have only had one global hit, Echo Beach, they are still prevalent in Canada.
This song is from their debut album, Metro Music, from 1980. Andy Haas played the saxophone. He joined the band in 1978 but went out independently in 1990 and later worked with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Fred Frith, and many others.
George Michael - Careless Whisper
George Michael was an English pop icon when he was alive, died in 2016, and is now a legend. He is still one of the world's best-selling pop musicians. He started as the pop duo Wham! with Andrew Ridgeley in 1981, and by 1984, they were topping all the charts with two albums. In 1984, they stopped working together, and George Michael went solo. The first single was Careless Whispers, a worldwide success like everything else and number one in almost every country.
Interestingly, the first song demo was recorded in 1982 in one hour and cost Β£20 without the saxophone. Only later, when he was a pop star, did he indulge in more lavish arrangements. When the song was released as a single, the saxophone was played by Steve Gregory, an English jazz saxophonist and composer.
Sade - Smooth Operator
Helen Folasade Adu, better known as Sade, is a Nigerian-born British musician, composer, and producer known for her velvet voice, soul, jazz, and pop blend, and elegant style. She has released six albums, most recently in 2010, and is also known to perform very rarely.
Her first album, Diamond Life, was released in 1984 and became a worldwide hit, notably with the hit Smooth Operator. Steve Waterman, a member of her backing band, played the saxophone.
I wanted to mention the saxophone solo in Pink Floyd's "Money" as a bonus (because I'm a Pink Floyd fan). It is outstanding, but instead, I will feature another musician who isn't very well-known, but his song is timeless.
Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
Gerry Rafferty (1947-2011) was a Scottish musician who started in the folk rock band the Humblebums from 1965 to 1972, later in Stealers Wheel, leaving in 1975 to pursue a solo career that saw him release 11 albums.
The song Baker Street is from his second album, City To City, released in 1978. It became a worldwide hit (as did all the other songs listed here). Raphael Ravenscroft (1954 - 2014) was an English musician and composer who played the saxophone.
That's all for today, thank you for your attention.
I'm sure you know all of these classic hits, but you haven't listened to them in a while :)
Of course, if you also have a song with an excellent saxophone, please share it with me in the comments.
This is my 52nd post for #threetunetuesday, which @ablaze started. I hope what I'm sharing is enjoyable for others, too, because then it makes sense.

Thank you. These songs are, at least in my opinion, the top pop songs of the '80s.
