Three Tune Tuesday - Jorma Kaukonen
Hello music lovers! 🎵
It's a Tuesday, time for #threetunetuesday, and a chance to share something I'm listening to.
My last post here was a week ago, and continuing with the music, I'm recalling memories from the past with you.
Today's post is about the great blues, folk, and rock guitarist Jorma Kaukonen. Born in 1940 in Washington DC, he lived with his family in Pakistan and the Philippines, returned to the US in 1960, studied at Santa Clara University, played acoustic guitar in various bars around San Francisco, and until 1964, gave guitar lessons to young hippies, and even played guitar for Janis Joplin for a recording The Typewriter Tape.
In early 1965, a former classmate from Santa Clara University, Paul Kantner, invited him to play guitar in a new band, still without a name, Jorma suggested Jefferson Airplane, and the legendary band was born. They played together very successfully until 1973.
In 1970 Jorma formed the band Hot Tuna with his childhood friend Jack Cassidy, to play anywhere, anytime if not with Jefferson Airplane.
The band slowly broke up after 1973 for various reasons, changing its name to Jefferson Starship and finally just Starship, with none of the original members left.
The trio Hot Tuna still exists today and Jorma, although 84 years old, is still active. When I counted, he has released 42 studio albums with Jefferson Airplane, with Hot Tuna, and on his own, live and compilations I didn't even count.
As a guitarist, Jorma considers himself a strict country blues purist :)

To continue with the music, I have selected some songs from different periods of Jorma's activity.
Jefferson Airplane - Feel So Good
The song is from Jefferson Airplane's sixth studio album, 1971's Bark. Jorma Kaukonen wrote the music, sings and plays guitar for half of the songs on the album. The song Feel So Good was a hit of sorts and he plays it in solo shows.
Hot Tuna - Keep on Truckin'
The song is from the 1972 album Burgers. It was the third Hot Tuna album, with Jorma Kaukonen on guitar, Jack Cassidy on bass, Sam Piazza on drums, and Papa John Creach on violin.
Hot Tuna - Angel Of Darkness
The song was released as a single and as a prelude to their last studio album, 2011's Steady As She Goes, recorded twenty years after their previous one. It's also the band's last studio album, since then only compilations and live recordings have been released. Teresa Williams contributed backing vocals.

Hot Tuna - Hesitation Blues
Hesitation Blues is a traditional song of the American South, first recorded in 1916, always played by Jorma Kaukonen in his performances, and recorded on his first album Hot Tuna in 1970. This video was recorded live on Minnesota Public Radio Midmorning in 2009, with Jorma Kaukonen on guitar, Jack Cassidy on bass, and Barry Mitterhof on mandolin.

My absolute favourite is the bonus with the Hesitation Blues!
Many versions of Hesitation blues from Jorma exist. I was going to post this one first, which I think is better but the sound is worse, pure acoustic.
