Three Tune Tuesday - CAN

Hello, music lovers! 🎵

On #threetunestuesday, I reflect on the music I listened to growing up, and I had access to. And when something reminds me of moments from my youth, I try to relive those memories through music.

It rained yesterday, for the first time in two weeks. At first, it was just a light drizzle, but then it got heavier and heavier, and the wind picked up. It wasn’t too cold, but because of the dark, water-laden clouds, it was quite dark all day long.
I watched through the window as raindrops hit the glass because of the wind, and a melody came to mind - a song by the band CAN. I played it right away.

Today, once again, along with other songs by this legendary band.

CAN was a German experimental rock band formed in 1968 in Cologne. They played krautrock—a mix of psychedelia, funk, jazz, electronica, avant-garde, and repetitive rhythms, often with improvised elements and influences from musique concrète.

Although they did not achieve great commercial success themselves, their approach to rhythm and sound inspired many later artists and genres such as post-punk, indie rock, post-rock, ambient, and electronic music. They were active until 1979, with occasional reunions in the 1980s and 1990s. During this time, they released 11 studio albums.

Can - She Brings The Rain

Well, this is the song that popped into my head yesterday while I was watching the rain through the window. It’s one of their more melodic and, let’s say, more romantic songs. It was released on the 1970 album Soundtracks, a collection of various music written for films. This song is for the film 'Ein großer graublauer Vogel' (A Big Grey-Blue Bird) directed by Thomas Schamoni.

CAN - Spoon

The song is from their third album, 'Ege Bamyasi', released in 1972. They wrote it as the theme song for the German TV crime series 'Das Messer', and it became their biggest commercial hit. It was also one of the first rock songs ever to feature an early drum machine.

CAN - Mushroom

The song is from their second album, Tago Mago, released in 1971. It is often cited as a classic example of krautrock—a minimalist, hypnotic, repetitive, yet highly intense sound featuring undulating guitar lines, a marching drumbeat, improvisation, and a claustrophobic atmosphere.

As a bonus, Vernal Equinox, an instrumental track from the 1975 album Landed, was performed on the BBC Live show Old Grey Whistle Test. Repetition, improvisation, and groove.
