New Tunes 9.8.2024

Hello, music lovers! 🎶

The week is over, and here we are again with #newtunes, a selection of new songs by well-known artists who have already established their positions in the music industry, as well as lesser-known and new artists who are just beginning their journey to the top, or who aren't even trying to get there at all.

As usual, you can support them by listening if you have a few minutes, but if you don't like something, skip it.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Willie Nelson - The Border

At 91 years old, Willie Nelson is holding up remarkably well and consistently releasing new music. His 75th studio album, 'The Border,' is a perfectly balanced collection of covers of lesser-known songs by Nashville heroes and Willie's originals.
One notable track, 'The Border,' penned by Rodney Crowell and Allen Shamblin in 2019, vividly portrays the life of a border policeman.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Blues Pills - Bad Choices

Blues Pills is a not-so-new band from Örebro, Sweden. I came across it when I read a post by @monsterbuster, for which I thank him.
They've been playing since 2011 and have released a couple of EPs and four albums, the latest, Birthday, last week.
Their music takes us back to the golden age of hard rock, the 1960s and 1970s, with solid and sovereign vocals, classic guitar riffs with solo spots, and a tight and distinct rhythm section. What more could you want?

🎵 🎧 🎵

Pink Mexico - Petting Zoo

Pink Mexico is a band from Queens, New York that has been around and battling the ghosts of the underground for about ten years. They have released four albums and a few singles; the latest, Petting Zoo, is from July this year. They play a blend of grunge and pop that, after a few listens, sticks in your ears and resonates in your head, like Nirvana used to. I wouldn't dare say that it's anything fatal or magnificent. Maybe someone will like it.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Billy Strings - Leadfoot

Billy Strings is an American guitarist who has played chiefly bluegrass and various other genres since 2013. He rose to prominence, indeed stardom, in 2017 when Rolling Stone Magazine named him a Bluegrass Prodigy with an outstanding first album. He has won many awards, including a Best Bluegrass Album 2021 Grammy. He has collaborated with too many musicians to mention.
The song 'Leadfoot' is the introduction to his new fourth album, 'Highway Prayers,' which will be released in September this year.

🎵 🎧 🎵

The Raveonettes - Venus In Furs

The Raveonettes are a Danish indie rock duo from Copenhagen and have been on the music scene since the beginning of this century. In 2016, after their eighth album, they decided to take a hiatus that lasted until this year, and last week, they released 'The Raveonettes Sing...', a collection of ten covers of bands and songs that have influenced their sound.
The Raveonettes' musical aesthetic is deeply rooted in the pop music of the 1950s and 1960s. They take these classic samples and cover them with layers of noise and guitar distortion, creating a sound that is uniquely their own. Their choice of covers, including the Everly Brothers, the Cramps, the Velvets, and many others, is a tribute to these influential decades.
Of course, covers rarely surpass the originals, and that's the case here, but for those who know the songs, it might be interesting. I recommend listening to the whole album. For this presentation, I have chosen the Velvet Underground's cover of the fatal and dark Venus In Furs, which I know very well.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Total Blue - Corsair

Total Blue is a new band, a trio from Los Angeles, presenting their eponymous debut album. It's a new name for me. After a decade of collaboration in different fields, Nicky Benedek, producer, DJ, and guitarist; Alex Talan, film music composer and screenwriter; and Anthony Calonic, studio musician, have decided to work together on a Total Blue project.
Primarily ambient music with shades of jazz, created in a subtle flirtation of the guitar with digital synths and different and non-dominant percussion. The songs radiate subtlety and an eye for detail, texture, and color. It can be listened to anywhere, anytime. The whole album, of course.

🎵 🎧 🎵

André Droga - Mezcal

André Droga is a young Slovenian musician who lives and works mostly in Berlin. In July, he released his debut album, 'Who said anything about anything, everything is something', a mix of lo-fi indie pop, alternative r'n'b, and post-trap. Any international or even global breakthrough with such music is questionable in the sense that there is a lot of such music and musicians, especially on TikTok and Instagram. We will follow him on his journey and see what happens.
The song Mescal, let's say, emphasizes the guitar and bass line more, but it's totally in style.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Truck Violence - Drunk to Death

Truck Violence is a Canadian punk/hardcore band from a lonely, desolate corner of the rural plains of western Alberta, where there is a divide between urban centers and impoverished wastelands.
In July this year, they released their debut album, Violence, which sounds exactly like the title: dead dreams, murdered wishes, and unfulfilled fantasies. With its steaming vocals and distorted guitar, sincerity presents the inhabitants of this desolate land, either depressed, driving trucks, drinking themselves to death, or casually hanging themselves from trees - in short, a land from which one must escape elsewhere. But where?

🎶That's all for today, and enjoy your weekend with new songs!

Thank you. That's what I look for in new songs. And they often remind me of some older ones. We are in the age of recycling and remixing.

The band is new to me, but I also feel the energy; at times, it's like I'm listening to Free.

Truck Violence put it exactly in a nutshell - life can turn out to be a load of shit. And that has to be said.
Blues Pill are the positive surprise for me.
However, I insist that The Raveonettes also have plenty of exciting things to offer.
I would take a more relaxed view of André Droga if only I could understand what he was talking about.

I agree with you.
Yes, this André is still young; he mumbles but is good at composing.
