New Tunes 8.4.2025
Hello music friends! 🎶
It's Friday, and it's time for new music! A selection of fresh music by well-known and lesser-known musicians that still resonates in my ears and will be the soundtrack for the weekend and beyond.
There was more choice, I skipped last week's post, I was somewhere else :)
Eight songs in different styles, to brighten up these dull, cloudy, and rainy days here that won't end. Where is summer?
If you have a few minutes, you can support the musicians by listening. Every stream counts! Maybe something will catch your attention, and you'll dig deeper.
But if you don't like them, skip it!

The Residents - Contemplation
The Residents, the cult and avant-garde band from Louisiana, USA, who have been active since 1969, resurfaced in 2020 with Doctor Dark. A fusion of dissonant art rock, industrial rhythms, choral chants, Dadaist soundscapes, children's songs, electronic matrices, heavy metal darkness, and classical orchestration. A metaphor for the contemporary world, where individual pain is transformed into institutional farce and moral panic. Like an opera, it must be listened to from beginning to end.
clipping. - Change the Channel
clipping., a rap trio that has been active in the underground Los Angeles music scene for a good decade, released Dead Channel Sky in March this year, after five years.
Verses and associations of cyber-punk culture aim at a sociopolitical critique of a dystopian reality in which technology has swallowed morality.
Hackers, green numbers on a black screen, metres of cables, and kilometres of moral decadence. The matrix, corruption, and a double reality. They look to me like successors to the Prodigy. Hip-hop from Sub Pop.
Juana Aguirre - las espinas
Juana Aquirre, an Argentinian musician known as the leader of Churupaca, released her second solo album, "anónimo," at the beginning of April, which mixes folk, indie, electronica, and Argentinian traditions.
Her voice exudes intimate honesty. She scatters poetic glimpses throughout the songs and relies on the alchemistic power of music, which always knows how to turn pain into light.
Alabaster DePlume - Thank You My Pain
Alabaster DePlume is a British jazz musician, saxophonist, and composer. He has been recording since 2012, but became more well-known in 2019 when he recorded under the Chicago-based record label International Anthem. In March, he released his seventh album, "A Blade Because A Blade Is Whole," featuring the song "Thank You, My Pain."
The music is DePlum's meditation, in which he continues to explore his mental healing. It is mostly quiet but airy and bright, with strings, guitar, and saxophone. It has something about Tom Waits.
Viagra Boys - Uno II
Viagra Boys are a Swedish post-punk band from Stockholm, who released their fourth album "Viagr Aboys" at the end of April, in which they deal with the modern ills that cause us stress and anxiety in an absurdly comical way. Uno II is the third single (and video) since they've been working in their own production company, Shrimp Enterprises :)
The song is from the perspective of a confused dog visiting the vet, which resembles a fever dream in which we hallucinate about the most random things. The popish flute that appears between the end of the verses and enters the chorus heightened the sense of surrealism.
Spirits of Stygia - A Vacant Place
Spirits of Stygia is a new, well, not so new Slovenian band. They have been active since 2020 and have released two EPs. Their debut album, Free From Pain, was released at the end of March. They identify as deathcore, a mix of death metal and beatdown hardcore. The labels of the genres mentioned above have started to notice them. They have tornadoes of guitar riffs, tank-heavy drums, and screaming vocals. Who dares to listen!
Black Flower - Synesthetic
Black Flover is a Belgian hybrid jazz ensemble that blurs the boundaries between genres, creating unique, deep, and organic blends of sonic textures and rhythms.
Kinetic is their sixth album. It's an ethno jazz, groove, and dub album with a lot of flute and whistle. Highly recommended!
FACS - A Room
FACS is an American band from Chicago. They have been playing together since 2017, and at the end of February, they released their sixth album, Wish Defense. The album has a minimalistic sound of song melodies, spiced with psychedelia and punk rawness. It is modern rock. At times, it smells like an underground King Crimson.
As a curiosity: This was the last album produced by Steve Albini before he died.
🎶That's all for today, and enjoy your weekend with new songs!
