Peter Gabriel - Put the Bucket Down
Peter Gabriel is an English musician who formerly sang with the band Genesis, then went solo and became quite successful.
The song is a preview of the upcoming album O/I, which is a sequel to the 2023 album I/O. On the previous album, all the songs were available in two versionsβa Bright-Side mix and a Dark-Side mix. The new album will probably be the same, as Put the Bucket Down is a Bright-Side mix, an energetic and danceable song in Gabriel's typical style, with lyrics about reading and writing thoughts.
Seasick Steve - Somebody
Seasick Steve is an American musician and one-man band known for his raw blues sound, which he plays on customized or homemade guitars. He has released thirteen albums to date. He is very popular at festivals.
The song Somebody is his latest single, released a few days ago. I'm not sure if it's a preview of a new album, but it's in a raw country-blues style, with a sliding guitar and a strong rhythm. The production is polished, and the lyrics are typical of the blues, conveying a sense of confusion and a search for direction, and are very personal.
Mandrake Handshake - King Cnut
Mandrake Handshake is a new band for me. They formed in Oxford in 2018 and describe themselves as 'Flowerkraut', a hedonistic mix of krautrock, art-pop, and psychedelia. They have between 7 and 10 members. So far, they have released several singles, two EPs, and one studio album, Earth-Sized Worlds, from last year.
King Cnut is a song written after the legend of King Cnut, who set up his throne on the coast. A hypnotic and groovy song, it sounds like a mixture of Jefferson Airplane and krautrock riffs from the 70s, very danceable and modern. The recording was made at the Trans Musicales 2025 festival at the end of December and was released a few days ago.
Max Cooper - A Sense Of Getting Closer
Max Cooper is a British electronic music producer, composer, and multidisciplinary artist. He also holds a PhD in computational biology and worked as a scientist before pursuing a career in music. He has released eight studio albums, along with numerous remixes and live recordings. His genres include IDM, ambient techno, and experimental electronic music, and he integrates science, visual art, and music into his performances.
A Sense of Getting Closer is from his album On Being, which was released last year, and the video was released at the end of January.
Norah Jones & Joshua Homme - Somethin' Stupid
This is a duet by two top musicians, Norah Jones and Joshua Homme (QOTSA), and a preview was released today for the upcoming podcast, Norah Jones Is Playing Along.
The song is a cover of the 1966 classic Somethin' Stupid, written by C. Carson, the most famous performance (to date) being the father-daughter duet, Frank and Nancy Sinatra.
Their version retains the original's slight romanticism, featuring a soft, warm piano sound, acoustic guitar, and male-female vocals. Definitely suitable for Valentine's Day :)
The Black Keys - You Got To Lose
You Got To Lose is the latest single from this supergroup and heralds their new album, their 14th, Peaches!, which will be released on May 1.
This is a cover of Ike Turner's 1958 blues song. Classic garage blues rock with blues riffs and rough vocals. Raw and primal, it sounds like a return to their roots.
Muddy What? - Neon Soul
Another blues song, there are quite a few of them this week :)
Muddy What? is a German trio from Munich. They have been playing since 2017 and have released five albums so far. They play contemporary blues with classical influences, and critics consider them a revival of European blues. They are a new band for me and sound surprisingly fresh.
The song Neon Soul is the first single from their new album of the same name, which will be released in March this year. It's an energetic, modern blues song about survival, intimacy, and the power of emotions in these dark times.
Post Malone, Slash, Duff McKagan, Chad Smith & Andrew Watt - War Pigs - GRAMMYs Performance live
Finally, there was this performance at the 68th Grammy Awards a week ago, as part of the In Memoriam segment, where a rock supergroup performed a cover of Black Sabbath's classic song War Pigs as a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. An excellent cover.
πΆ That should be all for today, thanks for your attention, and enjoy your weekend with new songs!
