Rok Zalokar Zhlehtet - twelve tone waves
Zhlehtet is a project by Rok Zalokar, a Slovenian pianist, composer, and producer from Ljubljana, who works with ambient, contemporary jazz, spiritual jazz, and electroacoustic soundscapes.
Zhlehtet is not a fixed line-up; sometimes more, sometimes fewer musicians improvise depending on the cue. They have been active since 2020 and have released six albums, the latest, Pieces For Collective Change, last week.
The song Twelve Tone Waves is from the latest album and flirts with dodecaphony, a 12-tone technique from contemporary classical music, improvised in a wavy jazz form.
John Maus - I Hate Antichrist
John Maus is an American composer and singer from Minnesota. He has been active in the music industry for over two decades. He has released six albums, the latest of which, Latter Than You Think, was released in late September. His music is engaging, belongs to the genres of synth and hypnagogic pop, and explores themes of identity, spirituality, and social criticism, with influences from 80s new wave and experimental electronics.
The song I Hate Antichrist is a minimal synth with repetitive vocals and acts as a digital exorcism and spiritual rebellion against modern false messiahs (read: tech moguls, popular politicians, and influencers).
Veilburner - Rigor & Wraith
Veilburner is an American duo from Pennsylvania that has been operating in the realm of grotesque extreme metal with a ritualistic and industrial atmosphere since its inception in 2013. So far, they have released one EP and seven albums, the latest, Longing for Triumph, Reeking of Tragedy, three weeks ago.
The song Rigor & Wraith is atmospheric black metal with death-doom elements, featuring slow, floating rhythms in an endless circle of triumph and tragedy.
SH!TOMATO - OOEYGEODUCK
Sh!tomato is the solo project of Daniel Wolff, an American musician and composer from Chicago, perhaps better known as a member of the experimental jazz duo Comfort Food. A new name for me and a debut album with the same title were released at the end of March this year on the Los Angeles label Already Dead Tapes.
Improvisational composing and a DIY approach have blossomed into a conglomerate of noise rock, psych triphop, and jazz punk.
The song Ooeygeoduck is raw as a tomato that bursts, a typical example of melancholic hypnosis and noise that washes and cleanses our brains.
KOIKOI - Plivam
Koikoi is a Serbian indie rock band from Belgrade, continuing the tradition of urban and melodic guitar rock on the independent scene of the former Yugoslavia. They have been active since 2020, and have released two albums so far, the latest, O sreฤi u snovima (On Happiness in Dreams), three weeks ago.
The song Plivam (I'm swimming, in English) is a wavy composition with a strong bass and harmonious male-female vocal polyphony, a mix of psychedelic pop and indie rock, and an introspective exploration of luck or fate in dreams.
GORZ - ventanas (Ecos)
Gorz is a duo based in Berlin, Germany, since 2023. It consists of Lara Alarcon, a vocalist and composer from Argentina, and Cyrill Ferrari, a guitarist from Switzerland. It's a new name for me. Together they have released two albums so far, the latest, My tongue on your cheek, at the end of September. In their music, they strongly emphasize the rough mixing of punk, grunge, noise, rock, dream pop, and death metal, and they call it, in their own words, cutecore. In their lyrics, they are engaged, politically and socially critical, ironic, and deal with the relationship to the body and political hypocrisy.
STERรID - AFTER DAWN
Sterรถid is a new Australian band from Sydney. So far, they have released one EP and the debut album Chainmail Commandos at the end of July this year. A new name for me. Fast and energetic, short and melodic guitar egg punk, a mutation of Devo or Thin Lizzy, if you will.
I had the opportunity to watch them live at my local club two weeks ago, and they deserve a mention: great fun in three chords, without a hint of philosophizing or fantasizing, just pure rock'n'roll.
Aerosmith, YUNGBLUD - Problems
Finally, Aerosmith, the dinosaurs of American hard rock, with the help of rising global star Youngblood, who the big rockers have adopted to continue this rock star iconography. I mentioned him in #newtunes recently. With his fourth album, Idols, he has almost reached the top of the music pyramid, and this collaboration is like a cherry on the sweet cake of glory.
The song 'Problems' is from their new joint EP, One More Time, released a week ago, and is quickly climbing the music charts.
๐ถ That should be all for today, thanks for your attention, and enjoy your weekend with new songs!
