Primus - The Ol’ Grizz

Primus, an American band from California that has been active on the music scene—with a few hiatuses—for over 40 years, still hasn’t said its last word. They have released 11 studio albums (the latest in 2017), and recently released a new EP, 'A Handful Of Nugs,' featuring the first single, 'The Ol' Grizz.'
Classic Primus sound—characteristic funk metal and experimental rock with strong influences of progressive rock, psychedelia, and country. Exceptional technical bass (slap & tapping), strange, humorous, and dark lyrics, off-beat groove, and a mutant-funk vibe.

Mexican Institute of Sound, Meridian Brothers - Ritmo Babilonia feat. Beck

"Ritmo Babilonia" is the first single from a collaborative Mexican-Colombian project—the album Ruido Tovar (released last week)—by the Mexican Institute of Sound (Mexico City) and Meridian Brothers (Bogotá). The song is a modern reinterpretation (or cover) of the Mexican classic "El Festival De Mi Pueblo" by Rigo Tovar (1981). An energetic, danceable tropical groove blending cumbia, champeta, psychedelic funk, dub, and electronic elements. Beck’s vocals add English verses, giving the song a unique, fun, and international flair. A new band for me that I’ll be following closely.

Inspiral Carpets - Drag The Bag

Inspiral Carpets from Oldham, UK, have been on the scene for 43 years. They play indie rock with a strong emphasis on psychedelic organ; the Hammond sound is their trademark. A mix of indie, psychedelia, and Britpop. To date, they have released five albums, the last one in 2014.
The song “Drag The Bag” is their new single, released last week, their first in 12 years. It’s an energetic, keyboard-driven rock track with powerful organ, a catchy chorus, and the classic Inspiral Carpets sound. It sounds fresh, yet very much in the old guard's fashion.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Voka Gentle - Battle Sequence (I'm Atomic)

Voka Gentle is an English trio from London. They have been playing together since 2014. Initially, their sound was more folk-oriented, but over time, they have evolved into experimental avant-garde indie rock, blending looped beats, field recordings, binaural stereo recordings, psychedelic elements, art rock, and advanced production techniques.
The song "Battle Sequence (I'm Atomic)" is a single from their latest third album, Domestic Bliss, released in February of this year. It features a powerful, repetitive beat with sharp guitar riffs, psychedelic layers, and intense production.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Pixvae - Y No He Visto Na'

Pixvae are from Lyon, France. A French-Colombian project. A new band for me. They’ve been playing for 10 years and have released 4 studio albums. A powerful mix of traditional Afro-Colombian currulao music (marimba de chonta, cununos, bombos, guasá) with math-rock, noise rock, jazz, and progressive elements. Energetic, danceable, and experimental “Colombian crunch.”
The song “Y No He Visto Na’” is a single from their latest, fourth album, De Lado a Lado, released this past April. Hypnotic currulao rhythms, distinctive vocals, and a French noisy/art-rock layer.

🎵 🎧 🎵

FRANKENBOK - GEPPETTO'S SCARECROW

Although Frankenbok are an Australian metal legend, having been around for 29 years and released eight studio albums, they’re a new name to me. They play groove metal/thrash metal with strong influences from alternative, funk, punk, and death metal. An eclectic, brutal, and energetic sound—described as “the wild love child of Faith No More and the Red Hot Chili Peppers with a lot of metal and madness.”
The song “Geppeto’s Scarecrow” is a single from their new album, The Arriba War Honkle, released today. Heavy riffs, dynamic vocals, and a touch of playfulness.

🎵 🎧 🎵

The Broken Radios - Dark Highway

The Broken Radios is a fresh rock trio from Manchester, UK. A new name for me. They released two albums this year; their songs are a mix of melodic Britpop and energetic alternative rock, featuring catchy choruses, groovy guitars, melodic vocals, and rock energy with a modern indie touch.
The song “Dark Highway” is a single from the album The Revolution, released in early May of this year. It’s a dynamic, road-rock track with a neon-noir atmosphere, a groovy bassline, and an energetic guitar riff. It has a real “night drive” feeling—dark, still charged with energy.
They’re in a gray area for me, though. Namely, there isn’t much information about the members, so I believe they’re heavily AI-supported (also because they’re not on Bandcamp, which has been known to phase out AI-produced music from its platform).

🎵 🎧 🎵

HMelville - Litany of the Blind Astronomer | Dark Jazz

HMelville is a solo project—actually a niche YouTube channel—that uses AI to create dark jazz inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos and H.P. Lovecraft’s cosmic horror, exploring the feeling of human insignificance in the face of the ancient gods and the boundless universe.

Slow, ritualistic, atmospheric dark jazz, doom jazz, jazz noir with deep bass, dissonant piano, echoes, and reverb evokes the feeling of sunken cities and timeless, smoky jazz clubs in R’lyeh.
