Jerry Cantrell - Vilified
Jerry Cantrell, probably better known to most as the founder of Alice In Chains, one of the first bands to spread grunge rock, has released his fourth solo album, I Want Blood. On it, he is again in a state of agitation and incoherence with his surroundings, resulting in a stark, sad atmosphere reminiscent of his parent band's best releases.
Vilified is the album's opening song, and it refers to the increasing use of artificial intelligence in various creative processes and everyday life.
He has a pretty realistic opinion about it, albeit with a dose of bitterness: "AI is like any other tool - you can take a hammer and smash someone's head in or build a house; it all depends on the user of that hammer. In music, it's the same. There has to be a human element, a purpose, and a responsibility."
Lambrini Girls - Love
Lambrini Girls - I mentioned them a month or so ago. The Bristol-based raw, outspoken, brutal punk trio that's getting a lot of attention in alternative circles has released a new single for their eagerly awaited debut album, which will be out in January next year.
Judging by their previous recordings, the song Love, although with a sharp and uncompromising, relatively simple punk melody, is already quite polished against their last products. I'd say they're preparing them for a wider crowd.
Phil Dawson Quintet - Shifting Sands (Mainline)
Phil Dawson, London-based musician, guitarist, and producer, has assembled a prominent quintet of musicians from Europe, Africa, Brazil, and the USA in his latest album, Don't Waste Your Ancestors' Time, released today.
The mix of modern groove, jazz, and dub takes the music to a new dimension -perfect world music.
South African musician, actress, dancer, and poet Khadijatou Doyneh (Heliocentrics, YuYu Rock) contributed vocals or spoken lyrics.
Dynamite Shakers - Ridiculous
Dynamite Shakers is a French rock band that has been active since 2019 and has released two albums so far, most recently, Don't Be Boring, in November this year. It certainly will be exciting with them.
Their music is top-notch garage rock in the style of The Sonics, Flamin' Groovies, or Fleshtones. It was a pleasant surprise and one of the better albums this year.
Fans of this style will undoubtedly be satisfied. I recommend the whole album.
Hot Chip & Sleaford Mods - Cat Burglar
Hot Chip is an English synthpop band active since 2000. Together with the notorious minimal-punk duo Sleaford Mods, they released the 7" EP Nom Nom Nom Nom/Cat Burglar last week.
I was actually in a dilemma about which song to choose because I like them both. Sleaford Mods are signed to Nom Nom Nom Nom, and Hot Chip is signed to Cat Burglar. I chose the latter because I find it more dynamic and danceable. It's a combination of electronica and raw industrial, supported by satire on modern consumerism. I recommend it.
Haley Heynderickx - Foxglove
Haley Heynderickx is an American folk musician from Portland, Oregon. She has been performing since 2016 and released her second album, Seed of a Seed, at the beginning of November this year.
Although some people think folk music is tedious and unnecessary in today's world, which is full of everything, it might be hard to agree.
Haley is a new version of Joni Mitchel. Of course, it's less eclectic and has a more modern musical and production approach. However, it still sounds original enough to catch my attention.
PliƩ - Speed Diva
PliƩ is a six-piece Lithuanian band from Vilnius that has been active since 2020. It's a new name for me, and since they produce noisy cross-genre collages, I don't know (yet) where exactly to put them. Maybe experimental noise rock?
They released their second album, We Know Exactly What We're Doing, at the end of September. The title is rather pretentious, but after listening to it, I have to admit that it's true.
The drum patterns are interrupted by broken rhythms, weird vocals and spots of chaotic free-jazz that shake your guts.
Speed Diva is more industrial, reminding me at times of the Prodigy.
Mount Eerie - Huge Fire
Mount Eerie, or Phil Elverum, is an American musician and composer from Anacortes, Washington, experimenting with sounds and recordings since the 1990s.
His latest, the double album Night Palace, was released in November this year and is, as he puts it, "a culmination of the periods we've come to after wading through decades of turbulent living and building from scratch in the settled dust."
He recorded and produced all songs, lyrics, and instruments.
š¶That's all for today, and enjoy your weekend with new songs!
