New Tunes 15.12.2023

Hello music lovers! 🎶

Are we slowly settling down and preparing for celebrations and new successes in the year ahead? Isn't it time for you yet?
Well, I've got quite a few commitments, but that doesn't mean the #newtunes selection of new music isn't available. Of course, it is!

New songs from well-known and lesser-known artists as well as new musicians are echoing out of speakers and online music services, trying to win our favour.

Just by taking a few minutes to listen, you have already done a lot. And if you like something, so much the better.
If it's not to your taste, just skip it.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Sleater-Kinney - Say It Like You Mean It

Sleater-Kinney is an American duo from Olympia, they started in 1994 in the so-called riot grrrl feminist movement and are still performing successfully today. Music critics consider them an important name in the American indie rock scene.
This song, Say It Like You Mean It, which they played a few days ago on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Show, as a musical guest, was the introduction to their new album Little Rope, which will be released on 19 January.
Yes, indie rock, laid back and melodic.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Haiku Hands - Feels So Good

Australian electro-rap dance trio Haiku Hands formed in 2017 and immediately had their tracks played on the local Triple J radio, which is considered by music insiders to be a kind of springboard for young and unestablished bands who, after a year or two, if they get a lot of airplay, go on to make it big in the world of music production. The band features sisters Claire and Mie Nikazawa from Sydney who previously did visuals for hip-hop collectives, and Beatrice Lewis from Melbourne who was formerly the producer of the Aboriginal women's group Kardajala Kirridarra.
Their visibility on the global music scene began with a performance in New York where they were spotted by Kevin Parker, the leader of the Tame Impala project, and then played as his support act on a US tour. To me, they sound like a mix of the Beastie Boys and the Chemical Brothers.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Jack Harlow & Dave - Stop Giving Me Advice

Lyrical Lemonade is a multimedia company that started as an internet blog under the leadership of Colin Bennett and then specialized in video production and collaborations with rap musicians. Their latest product is 'Stop Giving Me Advice' which announces their first music compilation 'All Is Yellow' to be released at the end of January 2024.
Here he collaborates with American rapper Jack Harlow and British rapper Dave, both highly respected in rap music circles.
For rap and hip-hop, I think it's quite an overachievement, musically, lyrically, and visually. Well, you be the judge.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Lana Del Rey - Take Me Home, Country Roads

I love covers, especially of some classic rock or in this case country songs that are so popular that they have become folk songs. So when I saw the news that the diva Lana Del Rey had released her interpretation of John Denver's 1971 classic country song, I had to listen to it.
Incidentally, Lana Del Rey is not just a something, her ninth album 'Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd' has been nominated for five Grammy Awards.
The extraordinary vocalist and musician has also taken this song 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' to a whole new emotional level that will certainly not be forgotten.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Guns N' Roses - The General

Guns N' Roses, who wouldn't know them, have just finished a world tour that sold 1.3 million tickets (if you count the average $100 ticket, they've made quite a lot of money...) and presented their latest single 'The General' with two sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl in their hometown of Los Angeles. So, yeah, a great cash machine and one of the most listened-to bands on Spotify. They are listened to by an average of 27 million listeners a month.
The song is fresh and punchy, but nothing particularly new, their standard style continues.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Hoshii - Dance of hopes and disappointments

Hoshii is a Polish jazz band from Warsaw and is mainly the project of one of the most respected Polish saxophonists, Kubo Więceka, who has gathered some of his musical friends around him. In recent years, Kuba has mainly been producing rap, hip-hop, dub, and similar music. And, as he says, he now wanted to bring all this experience with non-jazz sounds and computer and electronic production into his environment. Thus a new band and an album of the same name were released in November this year.
It all sounds like a modern arranged jazz form, controlled by the rhythmic instrumentation of rap and hip hop, even IDM and dubstep, spiced with melodic saxophone lines.
For this presentation, I chose a live session from November this year.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Get The Blessing - Oscillation ocre

Get The Blessing is a British jazzy quartet from Bristol, a new name and a surprise for me, active for over twenty years and presenting their seventh studio album 'Pallet', released in October this year. The quartet of drums, bass, trumpet, and saxophone have delved into more electronic sounds on this album, taking their jazz and fusion opus even higher.
With their unique, technically sophisticated sound, improvisation, and rhythmic beats, they are a prime example of being completely unencumbered by the outside world. They will probably never break through to the big stars, but it seems to me that they don't bother with that at all.
Their ability to make such creative and intelligent music - balanced with wit and passion - is a testament to the free spirit they embody. I recommend listening to the whole album.

🎵 🎧 🎵

Vlado Kreslin - S tabo je izi (americana)

And finally, Vlado Kreslin, is one of the most famous and most listened to Slovenian authors, I mentioned him already last week in #newtunes, because recently he celebrated his 70th birthday and for this occasion, they organized a concert where some Slovenian authors played covers of his songs.
Well, at the end of September this year he released a new album 'Kje si bila do sedaj' (in English Where Have You Been So Far), which has some new and some remixed old songs.
The song 'S tabo je izi (americana)' means 'It's easy with you' in English and as the title suggests, in Americana style. A song for all time, a nice and nostalgic country song, given meaning by Vlado's charismatic vocals.

🎶That's all for today, enjoy in #newtunes!
I hope you liked something, and thank you for your attention.

To make sure everyone understands what I'm so excited about, I'll stick to English.
The beginning says it all!

But the rest should not go unmentioned, because there are some real gems among them.

If someone asked me if I knew a Taylor Swift song, I would have to say no. Sleater-Kenney and Lana Del Rey, on the other hand, are part and parcel of my head. First class!

Guns 'N Roses live is almost unbeatable. I was at a concert in Mannheim.

Until your post, Hoshii was new to me. But I guess that's always the case in the beginning. It will change.

Jack Harlow & Dave surprised me positively, while the journey with Get The Blessing seems a bit too long.

Brilliantly good selection!!!!

Thank you for your extensive commentary. I don't have anything to say to you except that I like Get The Blessing just fine.
If you have time, check out this slightly older live recording of theirs.

You are opening up a completely new musical chapter. This is now exciting and almost incomparable to the “starter”.

Well, for me the latest album is very good, too. It's just a bit different.

I liked the simple version of Country Roads By Lana Del Rey.

The GNR tune was awesome! Started slow but then after the minute mark it went to another dimension! Very ethereal vocals. Thanks for sharing!
