Hello, music lovers! 🎶

It's Friday, and the first of this year's #newtunes fresh music selections is here! The weekend will be filled with sounds and tunes from lesser-known bands that deserve our attention, even if they're not at the top of the global charts. Most of them are English and are from London. They are mostly the results of the Covid crisis (does anyone else remember it?).

Eight songs vary in style and intensity; if you have nothing else to do, you can afford to listen. Something may stick in your mind, and you may dig deeper.
If you don't like something, skip it.

Moin - Guess It's Wrecked

Moin is a British band from London that has been active since 2020. It's new to me. You Never End is their third album, released last November. Their music is an exciting electronica and band brass hybrid and is hard to pigeonhole into a specific genre. Minimalist backing tracks consisting of rhythm machines, guitars, and a plethora of synthetic electronic interludes paint hopeless and cold urban landscapes with a strangely comforting melancholy.

SLOWHOLE - I'M GOING TO KILL YOU UNTIL YOU DIE

Slowhole is a band from New Orleans whose debut album of the same name was released at the end of October last year. It's a new band for me.
In their own words, the members observe all forms of the macabre in art, and they satisfactorily recreate that scary. The band sounds distinctly noirish, at times heavily sludgier, or, thanks to black metal blast beats, scorched and chopped. Another one who tortures themselves and then everyone else. For fans of the genre, I recommend it.

Fat White Family - Today You Become Man

Fat White Family is a band from London, UK. In a career spanning over ten years, they have released four albums and a couple of EPs and have established themselves in the South London music underground. Probably best known for a song on the soundtrack to Boyle's T2 Trainspotting film (Whitest Boy on the Beach).
Forgiveness Is Yours is their latest album. It is a mix of self-ironic, cathartic, toxic musical experimentation, delirium of substances, defiance of etiquette, and relentless disdain for existing society at all levels.
Today You Become Man is a chilling confession by the singer Lias Saoudi's older brother about his circumcision by an outdated medieval method in rural Algeria. I recommend the band's entire oeuvre; you will undoubtedly be surprised.

Brama - La Bruma

Brama is a French band from Clermont-Ferrand that has been performing since 2022. At the end of September last year, they released their second album with the same title.
The sounds of "brama, brama" are those of deer on the range, or so says the Occitan folklore from which the band, combined with modern influences of krautrock, Saharan guitar psychedelia, medieval hurdy-gurdy, echoes, reverbs, and distortions, richly embraces.

Warmduscher - Staying Alive

Warmduscher is a band from London, UK. They've been performing since 2015, almost ten years, and at the end of November last year, they released their fifth album, Too Cold to Hold. It's danceable post-punk with a hefty dose of English cynicism, somewhere between Ian Dury and the Viagra Boys. As they say themselves, they are "A subway sandwich ride to heaven, kisses on the pink parts."
Yeah, all that, and more from the past, is post-punk. No parallels with the Bee Gees and their Staying Alive song, if anyone was expecting that :)

Caxtrinho - Queda Livre

Caxtrinho, or Paulo Vitor Castro, is a Brazilian musician from Rio de Janeiro. He grew up in Baixada Fluminense, a suburb known for its slums, crime, and poverty. Queda Livre is his first album, which deals with the chaotic nature of the living space and the social and racial inequality in the suburbs. The interplay of psychedelic passages, Brazilian rhythms, and acoustic moments takes us into a unique and complex musical universe, which Caxtrinho and the other musicians have mastered perfectly. Highly recommended!
I gave him 5$, even though the album could be for free.

Ghoulies - Self-Help

Ghoulies is a band from Perth, Australia. They've been playing for about five years and released a couple of EPs and two albums, the latest, Shafted By Alghorithtm, on January 1st. This is a new band for me.
The band plays egg-punk or synth-punk music, fast, weird, synth bubblegum pop that's insanely infectious. No song is longer than two minutes.

Fat Dog - King Of The Slugs

Fat Dog is an English band from London. Founded in 2020 due to the COVID crisis, they released one single and, in September last year, their first album, Woof. I've mentioned them once before.
King Of The Slugs is their first single, which attracted the attention of music critics and listeners. The music is a mix of disco, punk, and klezmer.
And here is their KEXP radio appearance from October 24 (with a new drummer), released a few days ago.
