As a former music instructor, I would encourage you to start him on lessons soon, before he has a chance to settle into any serious bad habits. It's sort of like typing: if you teach yourself to "hunt and peck," it can be difficult to learn how to type properly (and efficiently) later on. But it won't hurt to let him just bang around on the drums for a while.
